MODERN TRENDS IN
RAILWAYS
⚫ The development trends on World’s railways reveal that
all advanced countries are trying their level best to
achieve the speed of airway and safety of railways.
Basis on the safety mainly 3 types of trains are used.
MAGLEV
Tube Railway
Metro or rapid transit system
MAGLEV Trains:
 The technology of such trains is based on the principle
of magnetic repulsion.
 MAGLEV trains runs on U-shaped guide way.
 The train as well as the guide way will be equipped with
magnets having south and north pole arranged
alternately.

TUBE
RAILWAYS
⚫ The railway provided underground at a greater
depth of about 18 m or more (up to 52 m) are
called tube railways.
⚫ This system of railways is so called as the section
of the underground tunnels, carrying the track, is to
avoid the interference of the tracks with water and
gas pipes, sewerage systems and oil or drainage
pipes, etc.

METRO OR RAPID TRANSIT
SYSTEM
⚫ It is a public transport system in an urban area with high
capacity, high frequency not needing timetables.
⚫ It is fast and is segregated from other traffic.
⚫ It is operating on an exclusive right of way,
⚫ Rapid transit systems are typically grade separated and
located either in underground tunnels (subways) or elevated
above street level (elevated transit line).

TERMINOLOGIES
• Adhesion of wheels:-
Resistance offered by the friction between the
metal surface of the rail and the wheel.
• Adzing of sleepers:-
In order to obtain an inward slope of 1 in 20 for the
rail, the sleepers are cut to form a table. The
process of cutting the wooden sleeper or casting
the concrete sleepers accordingly is known as
Adzing of sleepers.
• Ballast:-
Granular material used in packing under and around
the sleepers to transfer load from the sleepers.
• Ballast Crib:- the lose ballast between two
adjacent sleepers is known as Ballast crib.

VE
⚫ A locomotive or engine is a rail transport vehicle that
provides the motive power for a train.
⚫ A machine which transfers chemical energy of fuel to
mechanical energy of motion.
