DEFINITION
 It is one of the oldest modes of
transportation which occupies an unique
position.
 Inland water transportation is either in the
form of river or canal transportation
FACTORS
 Diversion of river water for different schemes
 Deforestation of hilly areas lead to erosion &
transportation of silt in the river beds
 Less importance given to the development of
inland water transportation because of rapid
development of other modes of transport

MERITS
 Cheapest mode of communication
 It provides a power means of security check
of the borders of the country like Indian
pennisula
 It provides one of the major defence mode,
the navy
 It has high capacity of load transport with
atmost safety
 It needs only a cheap motive power for its
working
 It contributes to the over all development of
commerce, industry and international trade
 It considerably improved industrialisation of
certain countries
DEMERITS
 Slow in operation & consumes more time
 Susceptable for accidents due to natural
calamities like ocean hurricans, etc.,
 Mountanious rivers cause hinderance by
water falls
 Presence of high tides and fluctuations in
water level cause hinderance for smooth
loading & unloading

 *To create & stabilize artificial beaches

SEA WALLS & BULKHEADS
 These are the structures constructed parallel to the
shore line specifically to separate land area from water
area
 Sea walls are used where the land to be protected in a
developed one & wave effects are severe
 Sea walls are massive & expensive
PROTECTIVE BEACHES
 Beaches of suitable dimensions are effective
in dissipating wave energy and also provides
protection to the adjacent upland .
 Eroded beaches can be wade good by
planning beach fill so as to ensure sand
supply at the required rate
SAND DUNES
 Sand dunes are formed along the coast which
prevent the free movement of tides and
waves into the area behind it
GROYNES
 Groyne is another shore protection structure.
This is used to build a protection beach or to
retard erosion
 Spacing between groynes should be such that
the length & spacing are in the ratio of 1:1 to
1:3
 Groynes can be constructed of timber piles or
steel sheet piles
OFFSHORE BREAKWATERS
 Protecting an area from wave action
 Shore protection structure
 Acts as a trap for littoral drift

POLLUTION OF INLAND WATERS
 The transportation sector is not directly
affected by the pollution of inland water
 It affects the health ,fisheries and agricultural
sectors
