SPLIT TENSILE STRENGTH OF CONCRETE
AIM:
To find out the tensile strength of concrete by split test on concrete
cylinder.
EQUIPMENT:
Cylinder for test and 100 t compression testing machine.
PRINCIPLE:
Concrete is strong in compression and weak in tension. Tensile forces
are taken mainly by reinforcement. Due to tension, cracks are formed. The test
is based on the fact that circular disc is subjected to compression load
diametrically. This is as per IS 5816 - 1970. ‘Split Tensile Strength of Concrete
Cylinder’. The splitting tensile strength of the material is given by F = 2P/ (πDL)

Where P is the maximum load.
D is the diameter of the cylinder.
L is the length of the cylinder.
TEST SETUP:
The test is conducted on 15cm diameter and 30cm height cylinder placed
centrally between the cross heads of compression testing machine. Two
packing strips of plywood are provided for transferring the load over an area in
the specimen surface.Measure the size of the cylinder. Test should be done at
28 day curing or more. Draw lines over the base symmetrically and also on the
surface area by using a pencil. Place packing strip on the lower plate and the
specimen is symmetrically placed over it. Place another packing strip on the top

of the specimen.Close the outlet valve, start the motor, open the inlet valve and
load the specimen. Note the maximum load at which the specimen splits and
fails.
