This document describes a webinar on using metadata to support data governance. It provides definitions of key terms like data governance, metadata, and non-invasive data governance. It explains that metadata is a byproduct of good governance practices like formalizing accountability and standards. The webinar will cover selecting important initial metadata, using metadata to support the governance program, and incorporating governance into processes to manage metadata. It promotes integrating governance roles and responsibilities into existing methodologies.
Data Systems Integration & Business Value Pt. 1: MetadataDATAVERSITY
Certain systems are more data focused than others. Usually their primary focus is on accomplishing integration of disparate data. In these cases, failure is most often attributable to the adoption of a single pillar (silver bullet). The three webinars in the Data Systems Integration and Business Value series are designed to illustrate that good systems development more often depends on at least three DM disciplines (pie wedges) in order to provide a solid foundation.
Much of the discussion of metadata focuses on understanding it and the associated technologies. While these are important, they represent a typical tool/technology focus and this has not achieved significant results to date. A more relevant question when considering pockets of metadata is: Whether to include them in the scope organizational metadata practices. By understanding what it means to include items in the scope of your metadata practices, you can begin to build systems that allow you to practice sophisticated ways to advance their data management and supported business initiatives. After a bit of practice in this manner you can position your organization to better exploit any and all metadata technologies.
This presentation provides you with an understanding of reference and master data management (MDM) goals, including establishing and implementing authoritative data sources, establishing and implementing more effective means of delivering data to various business processes, and increasing the quality of information used in organizational analytical functions (such as BI). Attendees will learn how to incorporate data quality engineering into the planning of reference and MDM. Finally, we will discuss why MDM is so critical to the organization’s overall data strategy.
Takeaways:
•What is reference and MDM?
•Why are reference and MDM important?
•How to use Reference and MDM Frameworks
•Guiding principles & best practices for MDM
Good systems development often depends on multiple data management disciplines. One of these is metadata. While much of the discussion around metadata focuses on understanding metadata itself along with associated technologies, this comprehensive issue often represents a typical tool-and-technology focus, which has not achieved significant results. If you have the discipline to develop, deliver, and maintain a business glossary, data dictionary, and/or a data catalog, you may already have the makings of a Data Governance program. The roles required to deliver these assets can translate to successful Data Governance in several ways.
In this month’s webinar, Bob Seiner will highlight the aspects of delivering these valuable business assets that result in formal Data Governance. It is practical that your program recognize existing efforts to formalize the definition, production, and usage of data.
Topics to be discussed in this webinar:
• How glossaries, dictionaries, and catalogs add value
• What should be included in these assets
• Who has responsibility for these assets
• When these assets will be valuable to your organization
• Where the discipline results in Data Governance

Thirty years is a long time for a technology foundation to be as active as relational databases. Are their replacements here? In this webinar, we say no.
Databases have not sat around while Hadoop emerged. The Hadoop era generated a ton of interest and confusion, but is it still relevant as organizations are deploying cloud storage like a kid in a candy store? We’ll discuss what platforms to use for what data. This is a critical decision that can dictate two to five times additional work effort if it’s a bad fit.
Drop the herd mentality. In reality, there is no “one size fits all” right now. We need to make our platform decisions amidst this backdrop.
This webinar will distinguish these analytic deployment options and help you platform 2020 and beyond for success.

Metadata provides context for the “who, what, when, where, and why” of data, and is of critical interest in today’s data-driven business environment. Since metadata is created and used by both business and IT, architectural and organizational techniques need to encompass a holistic approach across the organization to address all audiences. This webinar provides practical ways to manage metadata in your organization using both technical architecture and business techniques.
Five Things to Consider About Data Mesh and Data GovernanceDATAVERSITY
Data mesh was among the most discussed and controversial enterprise data management topics of 2021. One of the reasons people struggle with data mesh concepts is we still have a lot of open questions that we are not thinking about:

Metadata has the potential to impact nearly every part of your enterprise. From helping you connect data across business processes to holding the key to your most valuable assets, this underdog data is finally getting the attention it deserves.
But, according to a Dataversity report on Metadata, nearly a third of organizations have only begun to address managing this valuable data and a quarter have no metadata strategy at all.
Part of what has held organizations back is that metadata is notoriously sneaky data to manage, and even more difficult to put into action using traditional relational database technology.
This webinar will look at the critical importance of metadata and highlight mission critical metadata apps that have taken a new approach with enterprise NoSQL technology and semantic data models.
Organizations including commercial entities, intelligence agencies, and some of your favorite entertainment companies using this approach have made good on the promise of metadata, and this webinar will cover how you can make metadata the hero in your organization.
Data-Ed Webinar: Data Modeling FundamentalsDATAVERSITY
Because every organization produces and propagates data as part of their day-to-day operations, data trends are becoming more and more important in the mainstream business world’s consciousness. For many organizations in various industries, though, comprehension of this development begins and ends with buzzwords: “Big Data,” “NoSQL,” “Data Scientist,” and so on. Few realize that any and all solutions to their business problems, regardless of platform or relevant technology, rely to a critical extent on the data model supporting them. As such, Data Modeling is not an optional task for an organization’s data effort, but rather a vital activity that facilitates the solutions driving your business.
Instead of the technical minutiae of Data Modeling, this webinar will focus on its value and practicality for your organization. In doing so, we will:
Address fundamental Data Modeling methodologies, their differences and various practical applications, and trends around the practice of Data Modeling itself
Discuss abstract models and entity frameworks, as well as some basic tenets for application development
Examine the general shift from segmented Data Modeling to more business-integrated practices
Discuss fundamental Data Modeling concepts based on “The DAMA Guide to the Data Management Body of Knowledge” (DAMA DMBOK)
The document discusses data governance and why it is an imperative activity. It provides a historical perspective on data governance, noting that as data became more complex and valuable, the need for formal governance increased. The document outlines some key concepts for a successful data governance program, including having clearly defined policies covering data assets and processes, and establishing a strong culture that values data. It argues that proper data governance is now critical to business success in the same way as other core functions like finance.

ADV Slides: When and How Data Lakes Fit into a Modern Data ArchitectureDATAVERSITY
Whether to take data ingestion cycles off the ETL tool and the data warehouse or to facilitate competitive Data Science and building algorithms in the organization, the data lake – a place for unmodeled and vast data – will be provisioned widely in 2020.
Though it doesn’t have to be complicated, the data lake has a few key design points that are critical, and it does need to follow some principles for success. Avoid building the data swamp, but not the data lake! The tool ecosystem is building up around the data lake and soon many will have a robust lake and data warehouse. We will discuss policy to keep them straight, send data to its best platform, and keep users’ confidence up in their data platforms.
Data lakes will be built in cloud object storage. We’ll discuss the options there as well.
Get this data point for your data lake journey.
Convincing Stakeholders Data Governance Is EssentialDATAVERSITY
Organizations are investing heavily in becoming data-centric. Data Governance practitioners must begin to deploy effective Data Governance techniques to support these investments. One of these techniques is to tackle the problem of convincing stakeholders that Data Governance is necessary. This webinar will help you address that challenge.
Join Bob Seiner for this RWDG webinar, where he will provide three questions that must be answered thoroughly and honestly from a business and technical perspective. The answers to these questions will provide practitioners with the artillery needed to break down barriers preventing the organization from being convinced that the time is right to formalize Data Governance.
This webinar will focus on:
- Identifying the stakeholders that must be convinced
- The three questions that must be asked of the stakeholders
- What answers you should expect to receive
- The answers that may surprise you
- Using the answers to convince stakeholders that Data Governance is necessary
Strategic imperative the enterprise data modelDATAVERSITY
With today's increasingly complex data ecosystems, the Enterprise Data Model (EDM) is a strategic imperative that every organization should adopt. An Enterprise Data Model provides context and consistency for all organizational data assets, as well as a classification framework for data governance. Enterprise modeling is also totally consistent with agile workflows, evolving incrementally to keep pace with changing organizational factors. In this session, IDERA’s Ron Huizenga will discuss the increasing importance of the EDM, how it serves as a framework for all enterprise data assets, and provides a foundation for data governance.
DAMA Webinar: The Theory of Everything - Is it Time to Rethink Data Management?DATAVERSITY
With the arrival of big data, data science and the internet of things, you could be forgiven for thinking that our sophistication with data is advancing at a phenomenal rate, and from a technical perspective you’d be right. But has our mindset, especially within the data management profession, kept pace with the realities of our digital world?
In this thought-provoking session, let’s challenge the conventional wisdom about data management and explore whether we need to start thinking differently. In particular,
Does the language of data management serve to clarify or just confuse?
Have we developed a coherent set of best practice or a collection of functional silos?
Big or small, structured or unstructured, master or transactional – isn’t data just data?

Data Systems Integration & Business Value Pt. 2: CloudDATAVERSITY

Subscribing to Your Critical Data Supply Chain - Getting Value from True Data...DATAVERSITY
Operational Data Governance is more than a stewardship process for critical Business Assets. As organizations build structure around KPI’s and other critical data, a workflow develops that revolves around the sources and supply chain for that critical data. There can be many aspects to changes and inconsistencies affecting the final results of the supply chain. Inaccurate usage of data can result in audit penalties as well as erroneous report summaries and conclusions.
Is it coming from the correct authoritative source? Has the data been profiled? Has it met it’s threshold?
Gaps in the supply chain from incorrect pathways may lead dead ends or lost sources.
The value of understanding the entire supply chain cannot be overstated. When changes occur at and point, end users can validate that correct business standards, rules and policies have been applied to the critical data within the supply chain. Your organization can rest easy that you are not at risk for exposure due to improper usage, security, and compliance.
Join this webinar to uncover how companies are using data lineage to accomplish data supply chain transparency. You’ll also see the direct value clear data lineage can give to your business and IT landscape today.
Business Semantics for Data Governance and StewardshipPieter De Leenheer
Data quality and regulations are perpetual drivers for Data Governance and Stewardship solutions that systematically monitor the execution of data policy. And yet, there is a long road ahead to achieve Trust in Data. It is still a relatively unknown topic or comes with trauma from past failed attempts; there is no political framework with executive champions, leading to reactive rather than proactive behavior, and software support is marginal.
Data Governance and Stewardship requires automation of business semantics management at its nucleus, in order to achieve a wide adoption and confluence of Data Trust between business and IT communities in the organization.
In this lecture, we start by reviewing 'C' in ICT and reflect on the dilemma: what is the most important quality of data: truth or trust? We review the wide spectrum of business semantics. We visit the different phases of data pain as a company grows, and we map their situation on this spectrum of semantics.
Next, we introduce the principles and framework for business semantics management to support data governance and stewardship focusing on the structural (what), processual (how) and organizational (who) components. We illustrate with stories from the field.
In that session we will discuss about Data Governance, mainly around that fantastic platform Power BI (but also around on-prem concerns).

Successful Data Governance Models and FrameworksDATAVERSITY
There are three models that any organization can follow when implementing a Data Governance program. Programs can be developed to “command-and-control” the data. Programs can be developed to focus on a specific discipline such as protecting the data. And programs can focus on formalizing accountability for data across the board. Picking the model for your organization is the trick.
The treat is what will be discussed in this Real World Data Governance webinar with Bob Seiner. Bob will present a detailed assessment of each of the three models mentioned above. Many of the components of a successful program depend on the model selected. This webinar will outline and discuss these components.
In this webinar Bob will talk about:
• The three Data Governance models and frameworks
• Comparison of the models
• The up-side and downside of each model
• How to select the appropriate model for your organization
• Detailing the tricks while providing the treats

Data Catalogs Are the Answer – What Is the Question?DATAVERSITY
Organizations with governed metadata made available through their data catalog can answer questions their people have about the organization’s data. These organizations get more value from their data, protect their data better, gain improved ROI from data-centric projects and programs, and have more confidence in their most strategic data.
Join Bob Seiner for this lively webinar where he will talk about the value of a data catalog and how to build the use of the catalog into your stewards’ daily routines. Bob will share how the tool must be positioned for success and viewed as a must-have resource that is a steppingstone and catalyst to governed data across the organization.
In this webinar, Bob will focus on:
-Selecting the appropriate metadata to govern
-The business and technical value of a data catalog
-Building the catalog into people’s routines
-Positioning the data catalog for success
-Questions the data catalog can answer
Because every organization produces and propagates data as part of their day-to-day operations, data trends are becoming more and more important in the mainstream business world’s consciousness. For many organizations in various industries, though, comprehension of this development begins and ends with buzzwords: “Big Data,” “NoSQL,” “Data Scientist,” and so on. Few realize that all solutions to their business problems, regardless of platform or relevant technology, rely to a critical extent on the data model supporting them. As such, data modeling is not an optional task for an organization’s data effort, but rather a vital activity that facilitates the solutions driving your business. Since quality engineering/architecture work products do not happen accidentally, the more your organization depends on automation, the more important the data models driving the engineering and architecture activities of your organization. This webinar illustrates data modeling as a key activity upon which so much technology and business investment depends.
Specific learning objectives include:
- Understanding what types of challenges require data modeling to be part of the solution
- How automation requires standardization on derivable via data modeling techniques
- Why only a working partnership between data and the business can produce useful outcomes
Analytics play a critical role in supporting strategic business initiatives. Despite the obvious value to analytic professionals of providing the analytics for these initiatives, many executives question the economic return of analytics as well as data lakes, machine learning, master data management, and the like.
Technology professionals need to calculate and present business value in terms business executives can understand. Unfortunately, most IT professionals lack the knowledge required to develop comprehensive cost-benefit analyses and return on investment (ROI) measurements.
This session provides a framework to help technology professionals research, measure, and present the economic value of a proposed or existing analytics initiative, no matter the form that the business benefit arises. The session will provide practical advice about how to calculate ROI and the formulas, and how to collect the necessary information.
How a Semantic Layer Makes Data Mesh Work at ScaleDATAVERSITY
Data Mesh is a trending approach to building a decentralized data architecture by leveraging a domain-oriented, self-service design. However, the pure definition of Data Mesh lacks a center of excellence or central data team and doesn’t address the need for a common approach for sharing data products across teams. The semantic layer is emerging as a key component to supporting a Hub and Spoke style of organizing data teams by introducing data model sharing, collaboration, and distributed ownership controls.
This session will explain how data teams can define common models and definitions with a semantic layer to decentralize analytics product creation using a Hub and Spoke architecture.
Attend this session to learn about:
- The role of a Data Mesh in the modern cloud architecture.
- How a semantic layer can serve as the binding agent to support decentralization.
- How to drive self service with consistency and control.
Enterprise data literacy. A worthy objective? Certainly! A realistic goal? That remains to be seen. As companies consider investing in data literacy education, questions arise about its value and purpose. While the destination – having a data-fluent workforce – is attractive, we wonder how (and if) we can get there.
Kicking off this webinar series, we begin with a panel discussion to explore the landscape of literacy, including expert positions and results from focus groups:
- why it matters,
- what it means,
- what gets in the way,
- who needs it (and how much they need),
- what companies believe it will accomplish.
In this engaging discussion about literacy, we will set the stage for future webinars to answer specific questions and feature successful literacy efforts.
The Data Trifecta – Privacy, Security & Governance Race from Reactivity to Re...DATAVERSITY
Change is hard, especially in response to negative stimuli or what is perceived as negative stimuli. So organizations need to reframe how they think about data privacy, security and governance, treating them as value centers to 1) ensure enterprise data can flow where it needs to, 2) prevent – not just react – to internal and external threats, and 3) comply with data privacy and security regulations.
Working together, these roles can accelerate faster access to approved, relevant and higher quality data – and that means more successful use cases, faster speed to insights, and better business outcomes. However, both new information and tools are required to make the shift from defense to offense, reducing data drama while increasing its value.
Join us for this panel discussion with experts in these fields as they discuss:
- Recent research about where data privacy, security and governance stand
- The most valuable enterprise data use cases
- The common obstacles to data value creation
- New approaches to data privacy, security and governance
- Their advice on how to shift from a reactive to resilient mindset/culture/organization
You’ll be educated, entertained and inspired by this panel and their expertise in using the data trifecta to innovate more often, operate more efficiently, and differentiate more strategically.

Data Governance Trends and Best Practices To Implement TodayDATAVERSITY
1) The document discusses best practices for data protection on Google Cloud, including setting data policies, governing access, classifying sensitive data, controlling access, encryption, secure collaboration, and incident response.
2) It provides examples of how to limit access to data and sensitive information, gain visibility into where sensitive data resides, encrypt data with customer-controlled keys, harden workloads, run workloads confidentially, collaborate securely with untrusted parties, and address cloud security incidents.
3) The key recommendations are to protect data at rest and in use through classification, access controls, encryption, confidential computing; securely share data through techniques like secure multi-party computation; and have an incident response plan to quickly address threats.
It is a fascinating, explosive time for enterprise analytics.
It is from the position of analytics leadership that the enterprise mission will be executed and company leadership will emerge. The data professional is absolutely sitting on the performance of the company in this information economy and has an obligation to demonstrate the possibilities and originate the architecture, data, and projects that will deliver analytics. After all, no matter what business you’re in, you’re in the business of analytics.
The coming years will be full of big changes in enterprise analytics and data architecture. William will kick off the fifth year of the Advanced Analytics series with a discussion of the trends winning organizations should build into their plans, expectations, vision, and awareness now.
Too often I hear the question “Can you help me with our data strategy?” Unfortunately, for most, this is the wrong request because it focuses on the least valuable component: the data strategy itself. A more useful request is: “Can you help me apply data strategically?” Yes, at early maturity phases the process of developing strategic thinking about data is more important than the actual product! Trying to write a good (must less perfect) data strategy on the first attempt is generally not productive –particularly given the widespread acceptance of Mike Tyson’s truism: “Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face.” This program refocuses efforts on learning how to iteratively improve the way data is strategically applied. This will permit data-based strategy components to keep up with agile, evolving organizational strategies. It also contributes to three primary organizational data goals. Learn how to improve the following:
- Your organization’s data
- The way your people use data
- The way your people use data to achieve your organizational strategy
This will help in ways never imagined. Data are your sole non-depletable, non-degradable, durable strategic assets, and they are pervasively shared across every organizational area. Addressing existing challenges programmatically includes overcoming necessary but insufficient prerequisites and developing a disciplined, repeatable means of improving business objectives. This process (based on the theory of constraints) is where the strategic data work really occurs as organizations identify prioritized areas where better assets, literacy, and support (data strategy components) can help an organization better achieve specific strategic objectives. Then the process becomes lather, rinse, and repeat. Several complementary concepts are also covered, including:
- A cohesive argument for why data strategy is necessary for effective data governance
- An overview of prerequisites for effective strategic use of data strategy, as well as common pitfalls
- A repeatable process for identifying and removing data constraints
- The importance of balancing business operation and innovation
Who Should Own Data Governance – IT or Business?DATAVERSITY
The question is asked all the time: “What part of the organization should own your Data Governance program?” The typical answers are “the business” and “IT (information technology).” Another answer to that question is “Yes.” The program must be owned and reside somewhere in the organization. You may ask yourself if there is a correct answer to the question.
Join this new RWDG webinar with Bob Seiner where Bob will answer the question that is the title of this webinar. Determining ownership of Data Governance is a vital first step. Figuring out the appropriate part of the organization to manage the program is an important second step. This webinar will help you address these questions and more.
In this session Bob will share:
- What is meant by “the business” when it comes to owning Data Governance
- Why some people say that Data Governance in IT is destined to fail
- Examples of IT positioned Data Governance success
- Considerations for answering the question in your organization
- The final answer to the question of who should own Data Governance
This document summarizes a research study that assessed the data management practices of 175 organizations between 2000-2006. The study had both descriptive and self-improvement goals, such as understanding the range of practices and determining areas for improvement. Researchers used a structured interview process to evaluate organizations across six data management processes based on a 5-level maturity model. The results provided insights into an organization's practices and a roadmap for enhancing data management.
MLOps – Applying DevOps to Competitive AdvantageDATAVERSITY
MLOps is a practice for collaboration between Data Science and operations to manage the production machine learning (ML) lifecycles. As an amalgamation of “machine learning” and “operations,” MLOps applies DevOps principles to ML delivery, enabling the delivery of ML-based innovation at scale to result in:
Faster time to market of ML-based solutions
More rapid rate of experimentation, driving innovation
Assurance of quality, trustworthiness, and ethical AI
MLOps is essential for scaling ML. Without it, enterprises risk struggling with costly overhead and stalled progress. Several vendors have emerged with offerings to support MLOps: the major offerings are Microsoft Azure ML and Google Vertex AI. We looked at these offerings from the perspective of enterprise features and time-to-value.
