Too often I hear the question “Can you help me with our data strategy?” Unfortunately, for most, this is the wrong request because it focuses on the least valuable component: the data strategy itself. A more useful request is: “Can you help me apply data strategically?” Yes, at early maturity phases the process of developing strategic thinking about data is more important than the actual product! Trying to write a good (must less perfect) data strategy on the first attempt is generally not productive –particularly given the widespread acceptance of Mike Tyson’s truism: “Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face.” This program refocuses efforts on learning how to iteratively improve the way data is strategically applied. This will permit data-based strategy components to keep up with agile, evolving organizational strategies. It also contributes to three primary organizational data goals. Learn how to improve the following:
- Your organization’s data
- The way your people use data
- The way your people use data to achieve your organizational strategy
This will help in ways never imagined. Data are your sole non-depletable, non-degradable, durable strategic assets, and they are pervasively shared across every organizational area. Addressing existing challenges programmatically includes overcoming necessary but insufficient prerequisites and developing a disciplined, repeatable means of improving business objectives. This process (based on the theory of constraints) is where the strategic data work really occurs as organizations identify prioritized areas where better assets, literacy, and support (data strategy components) can help an organization better achieve specific strategic objectives. Then the process becomes lather, rinse, and repeat. Several complementary concepts are also covered, including:
- A cohesive argument for why data strategy is necessary for effective data governance
- An overview of prerequisites for effective strategic use of data strategy, as well as common pitfalls
- A repeatable process for identifying and removing data constraints
- The importance of balancing business operation and innovation

It then covers why a data strategy is needed to address common data issues. The strategy should define what the data team will and will not do. Developing the strategy requires gathering information, consulting other teams, and linking it to the organization's mission. Key aspects of the strategy include objectives, principles, delivery areas, and ensuring it is concise enough to be accessible and remembered.
Metadata is hotter than ever, according a number of recent DATAVERSITY surveys. More and more organizations are realizing that in order to drive business value from data, robust metadata is needed to gain the necessary context and lineage around key data assets. At the same time, industry regulations are driving the need for better transparency and understanding of information.
While metadata has been managed for decades, new strategies & approaches have been developed to support the ever-evolving data landscape, and provide more innovative ways to drive business value from metadata. This webinar will provide an overview of metadata strategies & technologies available to today’s organization, and provide insights into building successful business strategies for metadata adoption & use.

Data Catalogs Are the Answer – What is the Question?DATAVERSITY
Organizations with governed metadata made available through their data catalog can answer questions their people have about the organization’s data. These organizations get more value from their data, protect their data better, gain improved ROI from data-centric projects and programs, and have more confidence in their most strategic data.
Join Bob Seiner for this lively webinar where he will talk about the value of a data catalog and how to build the use of the catalog into your stewards’ daily routines. Bob will share how the tool must be positioned for success and viewed as a must-have resource that is a steppingstone and catalyst to governed data across the organization.
Because every organization produces and propagates data as part of their day-to-day operations, data trends are becoming more and more important in the mainstream business world’s consciousness. For many organizations in various industries, though, comprehension of this development begins and ends with buzzwords such as “big data,” “NoSQL,” “data scientist,” and so on. Few realize that any and all solutions to their business problems, regardless of platform or relevant technology, rely to a critical extent on the data model supporting them. As such, Data Modeling is not an optional task for an organization’s data effort, but rather a vital activity that facilitates the solutions driving your business. Since quality engineering/architecture work products do not happen accidentally, the more your organization depends on automation, the more important are the data models driving the engineering and architecture activities o
This document provides an overview of best practices in metadata management. It discusses what metadata is, why it is important, and how it adds context and definition to data. Metadata management is part of an overall data strategy. The document outlines different types of metadata and how it is used by various roles like developers, business people, auditors, and data architects. It discusses challenges like inconsistent metadata that can lead to issues. It also provides examples of metadata sources, architectural options, and how metadata enables capabilities like data lineage, impact analysis, and semantic relationships.
The Business Value of Metadata for Data GovernanceRoland Bullivant
In today’s digital economy, data drives the core processes that deliver profitability and growth - from marketing, to finance, to sales, supply chain, and more. It is also likely that for many large organizations much of their key data is retained in application packages from SAP, Oracle, Microsoft, Salesforce and others. In order to ensure that their foundational data infrastructure runs smoothly, most organizations have adopted a data governance initiative. These typically focus on the people and processes around managing data and information. Without an actionable link to the physical systems that run key business processes, however, governance programs can often lack the ‘teeth’ to effectively implement business change.
Metadata management is a process that can link business processes and drivers with the technical applications that support them. This makes data governance actionable and relevant in today’s fast-paced and results-driven business environment. One of the challenges facing data governance teams however, is the variety in format, accessibility and complexity of metadata across the organization’s systems.
A business-friendly approach to data governance is imperative to engage all users and accommodate diverse business use cases spanning analytics, operational improvements, and compliance requirements. To increase adoption and collaboration, business and technical data users across your organisation need to have a common, agreed-upon, and documented understanding of which data is most important, what it’s called, and where it’s used.
Watch this on-demand webinar, where we explore the concept of business-first Data Governance, an approach that promotes adoption by the organisation, lays the foundation for data integrity and consistently delivers business value in the long term.

Key Elements of a Successful Data Governance ProgramDATAVERSITY
At its core, Data Governance (DG) is all about managing data with guidance. This immediately provokes the question: Would you tolerate any of your assets to be managed without guidance? (In all likelihood, your organization has been managing data without adequate guidance and this accounts for its current, less-than-optimal state.) This program provides a practical guide to implementing DG or recharging your existing program. It provides an understanding of what Data Governance functions are required and how they fit with other Data Management disciplines. Understanding these aspects is a prerequisite to eliminate the ambiguity that often surrounds initial discussions and implement effective Data Governance/Stewardship programs that manage data in support of organizational strategy. Delegates will understand why Data Governance can be tricky for organizations due to data’s confounding characteristics. This webinar will focus on four key DG elements:
- Keeping DG practically focused
- DG must exist at the same level as HR
- Gradually add ingredients (practicing and getting better)
- Data Governance in action: storytelling
Organizations across most industries make some attempt to utilize Data Management and Data Strategies. While most organizations have both concepts implemented, they must fully understand the difference to fully achieve their goals.
This webinar will cover three lessons, each illustrated with examples, that will help you distinguish the difference between Data Strategy and Data Management processes and communicate their value to both internal and external decision-makers:
Understanding the difference between Data Strategy and Data Management
Prioritizing organizational Data Management needs vs. Data Strategy needs
Discuss foundational Data Management and Data Strategy concepts based on “The DAMA Guide to the Data Management Body of Knowledge” (DAMA DMBOK)

The document discusses implementing data governance and stewardship programs at universities. It provides examples of programs at Stanford University, George Washington University, and in the Flanders region of Belgium. The key aspects covered are:
- Establishing a data governance framework with roles, processes, asset definitions. and oversight council.
- Implementing data stewardship activities like data quality management, metadata development, and reference data management.
- Stanford's program established foundations for institutional research through data quality and context definitions.
- George Washington runs a centralized program managed by the IT governance office.
- The Flanders program provides research information and services across universities through consistent definitions, roles and collaborative workflows.
This document discusses the evolution of enterprise data platforms and introduces the concept of a data mesh as a potential next-generation architecture. It makes the following key points:
- Traditional centralized data platforms like data warehouses and data lakes have limitations around scalability and organizational bottlenecks as data use cases increase.
- A data mesh proposes a decentralized architecture with "domain ownership of data" to address these challenges. It advocates for data to be treated as a product and shared across organizational boundaries.
- A data mesh aims to enable rapid development of data use cases at scale, improve data quality/trustworthiness, and efficiently govern data - seen as the three pillars for increasing value from data.

Metadata is hotter than ever, according to a number of recent DATAVERSITY surveys.

Data Systems Integration & Business Value Pt. 2: CloudDATAVERSITY
Certain systems are more data focused than others. Usually their primary focus is on accomplishing integration of disparate data. In these cases, failure is most often attributable to the adoption of a single pillar (silver bullet). The three webinars in the Data Systems Integration and Business Value series are designed to illustrate that good systems development more often depends on at least three DM disciplines (pie wedges) in order to provide a solid foundation.
Data Systems Integration & Business Value Pt. 2: CloudData Blueprint
The document discusses cloud-based integration and its prerequisites. It states that for organizations to benefit from cloud integration, data must be (1) of higher quality, (2) lower volume, and (3) more shareable than data residing outside the cloud. Investments in data engineering are needed to cleanse, reduce the size of, and increase the shareability of datasets so that organizations can realize increased capacity, flexibility, and cost savings from cloud-based computing. The webinar will show how to identify opportunities for cloud integration and properly oversee efforts to capitalize on those opportunities.
DataEd Slides: Approaching Data Management TechnologiesDATAVERSITY
Our architecturally solid stool requires three legs: people, process, and technologies. This webinar looks at the most misunderstood of these three components: technology. While most organizations begin with technologies, it turns out that technologies are the last component that should be considered. This webinar will survey a range of Data Management technologies that can be used to increase the productivity of Data Management efforts.

Data-centric design and the knowledge graphAlan Morrison
The #knowledgegraph--smart data that can describe your business and its domains--is now eating software. We won't be able to scale AI or other emerging tech without knowledge graphs, because those techs all require a transformed data foundation, large-scale integration, and shared data infrastructure.
Key to knowledge graphs are #semantics, #graphdatabase technology and a Tinker Toy-style approach to adding the missing verbs (which provide connections and context) back into your data. A knowledge graph foundation provides a means of contextualizing business domains, your content and other data, for #AI at scale.

In this webinar, Bob will focus on:
-Selecting the appropriate metadata to govern
-The business and technical value of a data catalog
-Building the catalog into people’s routines
-Positioning the data catalog for success
-Questions the data catalog can answer
Because every organization produces and propagates data as part of their day-to-day operations, data trends are becoming more and more important in the mainstream business world’s consciousness. For many organizations in various industries, though, comprehension of this development begins and ends with buzzwords: “Big Data,” “NoSQL,” “Data Scientist,” and so on. Few realize that all solutions to their business problems, regardless of platform or relevant technology, rely to a critical extent on the data model supporting them. As such, data modeling is not an optional task for an organization’s data effort, but rather a vital activity that facilitates the solutions driving your business. Since quality engineering/architecture work products do not happen accidentally, the more your organization depends on automation, the more important the data models driving the engineering and architecture activities of your organization. This webinar illustrates data modeling as a key activity upon which so much technology and business investment depends.
Specific learning objectives include:
- Understanding what types of challenges require data modeling to be part of the solution
- How automation requires standardization on derivable via data modeling techniques
- Why only a working partnership between data and the business can produce useful outcomes
Analytics play a critical role in supporting strategic business initiatives. Despite the obvious value to analytic professionals of providing the analytics for these initiatives, many executives question the economic return of analytics as well as data lakes, machine learning, master data management, and the like.
Technology professionals need to calculate and present business value in terms business executives can understand. Unfortunately, most IT professionals lack the knowledge required to develop comprehensive cost-benefit analyses and return on investment (ROI) measurements.
This session provides a framework to help technology professionals research, measure, and present the economic value of a proposed or existing analytics initiative, no matter the form that the business benefit arises. The session will provide practical advice about how to calculate ROI and the formulas, and how to collect the necessary information.
How a Semantic Layer Makes Data Mesh Work at ScaleDATAVERSITY
Data Mesh is a trending approach to building a decentralized data architecture by leveraging a domain-oriented, self-service design. However, the pure definition of Data Mesh lacks a center of excellence or central data team and doesn’t address the need for a common approach for sharing data products across teams. The semantic layer is emerging as a key component to supporting a Hub and Spoke style of organizing data teams by introducing data model sharing, collaboration, and distributed ownership controls.
This session will explain how data teams can define common models and definitions with a semantic layer to decentralize analytics product creation using a Hub and Spoke architecture.
Attend this session to learn about:
- The role of a Data Mesh in the modern cloud architecture.
- How a semantic layer can serve as the binding agent to support decentralization.
- How to drive self service with consistency and control.
Enterprise data literacy. A worthy objective? Certainly! A realistic goal? That remains to be seen. As companies consider investing in data literacy education, questions arise about its value and purpose. While the destination – having a data-fluent workforce – is attractive, we wonder how (and if) we can get there.
Kicking off this webinar series, we begin with a panel discussion to explore the landscape of literacy, including expert positions and results from focus groups:
- why it matters,
- what it means,
- what gets in the way,
- who needs it (and how much they need),
- what companies believe it will accomplish.
In this engaging discussion about literacy, we will set the stage for future webinars to answer specific questions and feature successful literacy efforts.
The Data Trifecta – Privacy, Security & Governance Race from Reactivity to Re...DATAVERSITY
Change is hard, especially in response to negative stimuli or what is perceived as negative stimuli. So organizations need to reframe how they think about data privacy, security and governance, treating them as value centers to 1) ensure enterprise data can flow where it needs to, 2) prevent – not just react – to internal and external threats, and 3) comply with data privacy and security regulations.
Working together, these roles can accelerate faster access to approved, relevant and higher quality data – and that means more successful use cases, faster speed to insights, and better business outcomes. However, both new information and tools are required to make the shift from defense to offense, reducing data drama while increasing its value.
Join us for this panel discussion with experts in these fields as they discuss:
- Recent research about where data privacy, security and governance stand
- The most valuable enterprise data use cases
- The common obstacles to data value creation
- New approaches to data privacy, security and governance
- Their advice on how to shift from a reactive to resilient mindset/culture/organization
You’ll be educated, entertained and inspired by this panel and their expertise in using the data trifecta to innovate more often, operate more efficiently, and differentiate more strategically.

Who Should Own Data Governance – IT or Business?DATAVERSITY
The question is asked all the time: “What part of the organization should own your Data Governance program?” The typical answers are “the business” and “IT (information technology).” Another answer to that question is “Yes.” The program must be owned and reside somewhere in the organization. You may ask yourself if there is a correct answer to the question.
Join this new RWDG webinar with Bob Seiner where Bob will answer the question that is the title of this webinar. Determining ownership of Data Governance is a vital first step. Figuring out the appropriate part of the organization to manage the program is an important second step. This webinar will help you address these questions and more.
In this session Bob will share:
- What is meant by “the business” when it comes to owning Data Governance
- Why some people say that Data Governance in IT is destined to fail
- Examples of IT positioned Data Governance success
- Considerations for answering the question in your organization
- The final answer to the question of who should own Data Governance

Do People Really Know Their Fertility Intentions? Correspondence between Sel...Xiao Xu
Fertility intention data from surveys often serve as a crucial component in modeling fertility behaviors. Yet, the persistent gap between stated intentions and actual fertility decisions, coupled with the prevalence of uncertain responses, has cast doubt on the overall utility of intentions and sparked controversies about their nature. In this study, we use survey data from a representative sample of Dutch women. With the help of open-ended questions (OEQs) on fertility and Natural Language Processing (NLP) methods, we are able to conduct an in-depth analysis of fertility narratives. Specifically, we annotate the (expert) perceived fertility intentions of respondents and compare them to their self-reported intentions from the survey. Through this analysis, we aim to reveal the disparities between self-reported intentions and the narratives. Furthermore, by applying neural topic modeling methods, we could uncover which topics and characteristics are more prevalent among respondents who exhibit a significant discrepancy between their stated intentions and their probable future behavior, as reflected in their narratives.

Did you know that drowning is a leading cause of unintentional death among young children? According to recent data, children aged 1-4 years are at the highest risk. Let's raise awareness and take steps to prevent these tragic incidents. Supervision, barriers around pools, and learning CPR can make a difference. Stay safe this summer!

Emerging modern data management architectures
What people say..
1
Data Mesh
● a human and product-centric approach
● enable scaling by giveing discrete teams control over how their
data is stored and managed
● experts in certain business domains are in charge of preparing
& hosting specific data sets, governance, management and
processes
● data is seen as a product (value of the integration, SLA’s etc).
● to enable centralized analytics, reporting, BI and ML efforts,
APIs are used to connect to different data sources
● In a data mesh, each business unit is responsible for creating
and maintaining its own data and sharing it with others Instead
of using a single virtual layer to manage disparate sources, a
data mesh uses multiple domains, with each domain specific to
the needs/purpose of the domain
● more completely embraces distributed data governance and
management
● bottom-up process
● automation?!
● abstracts data from the location where it is created or stored
● uses metadata to automatically connect disparate data
● provide a single view of an organization’s data estate
● understand how datasets and metadata are related
● virtualization
● the technology eliminates the need for bulk transfers of data?!
● consists of a single source of truth
● is about eliminating humans from the process as much as possible
● does not require replacement of existing infrastructure but instead
adds a layer of additional technology above the existing
infrastructure that performs metadata management and inference
● data management is unified and not the actual storage
● semantics enable the formation of a knowledge graph that
deepens the connection across datasets
● top-down control
Data Fabric
What people do seem to agree on is that the two approaches are not mutually
exclusive and that customers can combine aspects of each to best suit their needs.

12.2 Pharmacodynamics
Treatment with glucocorticosteroids, including
UCERIS rectal foam, is associated with a
suppression of endogenous cortisol
concentrations and an impairment of the
hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis
function.
Knowledge graphs are connected graphs of data and
metadata that richly model real-world entities

We are at the second wave of the semantic technology. The first wave
began with the semantic web. The tools have matured since then. Today
you can process large knowledge graphs on reasonable hardware.
In the past, you had a graph database and some semantic modeling tool,
and you had to cobble that together. But now that is offered in a platform
fashion by the vendors. You have a lot of capabilities – like connections to
the data sources, modeling, mapping and blending tools, and last but not
least the analytics on top of the data.
It is a huge step forward.
