Fatigue
According Viteles (1970) industrial fatigue as a reducing working capacity caused by
length or intensity of some activity in a gainful occupation.
Fatigue is the state of feeling very tired, weary or sleepy resulting from insufficient sleep,
prolonged mental or physical work, or extended periods of stress or anxiety. Boring or
repetitive tasks can intensify feelings of fatigue. Fatigue can be described as either acute
or chronic.
Acute fatigue results from short-term sleep loss or from short periods of heavy physical
or mental work. The effects of acute fatigue are of short duration and usually can be
reversed by sleep and relaxation.
Chronic fatigue syndrome is the constant, severe state of tiredness that is not relieved by
rest. The symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome are similar to the flu, last longer than six
months and interfere with certain activities. The exact cause of this syndrome is still
unknown.
Fatigue, also referred to as tiredness, exhaustion, lethargy, and listlessness, describes a
physical and/or mental state of being tired and weak. Although physical and mental
fatigue are different, the two often exist together - if a person is physically exhausted for
long enough, they will also be mentally tired. When somebody experiences physical
fatigue, it means they cannot continue functioning at their normal levels of physical
ability. Mental fatigue, however, is more slanted towards feeling sleepy and being unable
to concentrate properly.
Fatigue is a symptom, rather than a sign. A symptom is something the patient feels and
describes, such as a headache or dizziness, while a sign is something the doctor can
detect without talking to the patient, such as a rash. Fatigue is a non-specific symptom,
i.e. it may have several possible causes.
Physical Fatigue
The person's muscles cannot do things as easily as they used to. Climbing stairs or
carrying laden supermarket bags may be much harder than before. Physical fatigue is also
known as muscle weakness, weakness, or lack of strength. Doctors usually carry out a
strength test as they go about diagnosing and trying to find out the causes of individual
cases of physical fatigue.
Psychological (mental) fatigue
Concentrating on things has become harder. When symptoms are severe the patient might
not want to get out of bed in the morning, or perform his/her daily activities. Mental
fatigue often appears together with physical fatigue in patients, but not always. People
may feel sleepy, have a decreased level of consciousness, and in some cases show signs

similar to that of an intoxicated state. Mental fatigue may be life threatening, especially
when the sufferer has to perform some tasks, such as driving a vehicle or operating heavy
machinery. Fatigue among training doctors is a serious public health concern; both for the
health of the junior doctor and patients under their responsibility.
Signs of Fatigue
โ€ข Tiredness,
โ€ข Sleepiness, including falling asleep against your will ("micro" sleeps),
โ€ข Irritability,
โ€ข Depression,
โ€ข Giddiness,
โ€ข Loss of appetite,
โ€ข Digestive problems, and
โ€ข Increased susceptibility to illness.

Causes of fatigue
There are many, many causes of fatigue.
Work-related factors may include long work hours, long hours of physical or mental
activity, insufficient break time between shifts, inadequate rest, excessive stress or a
combination of these factors.
Sometimes, a sleep disorder may cause fatigue. These conditions include:
Insomnia
People who suffer from insomnia often complain that they cannot fall asleep, or cannot
stay asleep for a full night. They may frequently wake up during the night, wake up too
early, not able to fall asleep at night, or have difficultly getting back to sleep if woken.
Either way, they do not feel rested. Insomnia can be both short term (in response to a
stressful event or change in environment) or long term.
Sleep Apnea
Most cases of sleep apnea are caused by a condition called "Obstructive Sleep Apnea".
Sleep apnea is a breathing disorder in which there are brief interruptions (lasting a
minimum of 10 seconds) in breathing during sleep. This condition is caused by a
narrowing (or collapse) of the throat or upper airway during sleep. This narrowing
restricts or prevents breathing while you are sleeping (air cannot flow into or out of your
nose and mouth even though your body continues to try to breathe). With sleep apnea,
there are frequent interruptions to sleep making your sleep unrestful. People often
complain of early morning headaches and excessive daytime sleepiness.
Symptoms of sleep apnea include:
โ€ข chronic, loud snoring,
โ€ข gasping or choking while sleeping,
โ€ข excessive daytime sleepiness, and
โ€ข personality changes or difficulties thinking.
Restless Legs Syndrome
With restless legs syndrome, people report sensations of creeping, crawling, pulling, or
tingling which cause an irresistible urge to move their legs. This phenomenon usually
happens as a person is trying to fall asleep, making sleep difficult. Movements may also
occur during sleep, partially waking the person (even though they might not "notice") and
disrupting sleep patterns.

Narcolepsy
Narcolepsy is a rare condition associated with sudden sleep "attacks" where a person will
have an uncontrollable urge to sleep many times in one day.
Other Situations
Substances such as nicotine, caffeine, and alcohol can affect the quality of sleep. Caffeine
can remain in the body for about 3 to 7 hours and may affect sleep. Alcohol may shorten
the time to fall asleep, but it disrupts later in the night. Nicotine also can disrupt sleep and
reduce total sleep time.
Other substances such as over-the-counter medications or prescriptions may also affect
sleep. For example, long-acting benzodiazepines (drugs used to relieve anxiety or
insomnia) may contribute to daytime sleepiness.

The effects of fatigue
Fatigue can affect all areas of your life. You may be too tired to take part in daily
activities, relationships and social events. It affects everyone differently and can cause
many different symptoms. Some people find their fatigue is very mild and doesnโ€™t
interfere much with their daily life. But for others, itโ€™s very disruptive. Because fatigue
cannot be "measured", it is difficult to separate the effects of long working hours or lack
of sleep to any changes in accident or injury rates.
The different levels of fatigue are described in the fatigue diary. Some of the more
common effects of fatigue include:
โ€ข Difficulty doing the smallest chores. Even everyday activities such as brushing
your hair, showering or cooking can seem impossible.
โ€ข A feeling of having no energy, as if you could spend the whole day in bed.
โ€ข A feeling of having no strength to do anything.
โ€ข Lack of concentration.
โ€ข Having trouble thinking, speaking or making decisions.
โ€ข Difficulty remembering things.
โ€ข Feeling breathless after only light activity.
โ€ข Dizziness or a feeling of light-headedness.
โ€ข Difficulty sleeping.
โ€ข Feeling more moody and emotional than usual.
โ€ข Reduced decision making ability,
โ€ข Reduced ability to do complex planning,
โ€ข Reduced communication skills,
โ€ข Reduced productivity / performance,
โ€ข Reduced attention and vigilance,
โ€ข Reduced ability to handle stress on the job,
โ€ข Reduced reaction time - both in speed and thought,
โ€ข Loss of memory or the ability to recall details,
โ€ข Failure to respond to changes in surroundings or information provided,
โ€ข Increased tendency for risk-taking,
โ€ข Increased forgetfulness,
โ€ข Increased errors in judgment,
โ€ข Increased sick time, absenteeism, rate of turnover,
โ€ข Increased medical costs, and
โ€ข Increased accident rates.
Fatigue can affect the way you think and feel. You may find it impossible to concentrate
on anything, which can affect school or your job. If youโ€™re having trouble concentrating,
it can also affect things that you usually enjoy doing. Even reading or watching TV can
be difficult.

Money may become a problem if you need to take time off work or stop working
completely.
Fatigue can affect your relationships. You may spend less time with friends and family,
or spend more time sleeping. It may make you become impatient with people around you,
or you may avoid going out or being with friends because itโ€™s too much effort.

How can a workplace help keep workers "alert"?
Fatigue is increased by:
โ€ข Dim lighting,
โ€ข Limited visual acuity (i.e., due to weather),
โ€ข High temperatures,
โ€ข High noise,
โ€ข High comfort,
โ€ข Tasks which must be sustained for long periods of time, and
โ€ข Work tasks which are long, repetitive, paced, difficult, boring and monotonous.
Workplaces can help by providing environments which have good lighting, comfortable
temperatures, and reasonable noise levels. Work tasks should provide a variety of interest
and tasks should change throughout the shift.
If extended hours/overtime are common, remember to consider the time required to
commute home, meal preparation, eating, socializing with family, etc. Workplaces may
wish to consider providing:
โ€ข On-site accommodations,
โ€ข Prepared meals for workers, and
โ€ข Facilities where employees can take a nap before they drive home.

Techniques of lessening Physical fatigue
All work involving physical expenditure of energy, fatigue is an inevitable effect of work
and all that can be done in such situations is to avoid unnecessary fatigue. There are two
ways in which this can be done. They are as follows.
The first one is related with the problem of machines and tools and their
arrangement in such a way that human energy is used with maximum economy. A
lot of work in this direction can be done by TIME AND MOTION studies.
The second one is to arrange the hours of work, work week, shift work and rest
pauses in such a way that the detrimental effects of fatigue are reduced.
This way we can reduce unnecessary fatigue with the proper study about the Time and
motion and the study of work hours, work week, shift work, rest pauses etc.

Industrial Psychology Fatigue

  • 1. INDUSTRIAL PSYCHOLOGY Veer Narmad South Gujarat University 1 Fatigue According Viteles (1970) industrial fatigue as a reducing working capacity caused by length or intensity of some activity in a gainful occupation. Fatigue is the state of feeling very tired, weary or sleepy resulting from insufficient sleep, prolonged mental or physical work, or extended periods of stress or anxiety. Boring or repetitive tasks can intensify feelings of fatigue. Fatigue can be described as either acute or chronic. Acute fatigue results from short-term sleep loss or from short periods of heavy physical or mental work. The effects of acute fatigue are of short duration and usually can be reversed by sleep and relaxation. Chronic fatigue syndrome is the constant, severe state of tiredness that is not relieved by rest. The symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome are similar to the flu, last longer than six months and interfere with certain activities. The exact cause of this syndrome is still unknown. Fatigue, also referred to as tiredness, exhaustion, lethargy, and listlessness, describes a physical and/or mental state of being tired and weak. Although physical and mental fatigue are different, the two often exist together - if a person is physically exhausted for long enough, they will also be mentally tired. When somebody experiences physical fatigue, it means they cannot continue functioning at their normal levels of physical ability. Mental fatigue, however, is more slanted towards feeling sleepy and being unable to concentrate properly. Fatigue is a symptom, rather than a sign. A symptom is something the patient feels and describes, such as a headache or dizziness, while a sign is something the doctor can detect without talking to the patient, such as a rash. Fatigue is a non-specific symptom, i.e. it may have several possible causes. Physical Fatigue The person's muscles cannot do things as easily as they used to. Climbing stairs or carrying laden supermarket bags may be much harder than before. Physical fatigue is also known as muscle weakness, weakness, or lack of strength. Doctors usually carry out a strength test as they go about diagnosing and trying to find out the causes of individual cases of physical fatigue. Psychological (mental) fatigue Concentrating on things has become harder. When symptoms are severe the patient might not want to get out of bed in the morning, or perform his/her daily activities. Mental fatigue often appears together with physical fatigue in patients, but not always. People may feel sleepy, have a decreased level of consciousness, and in some cases show signs
  • 2. INDUSTRIAL PSYCHOLOGY Veer Narmad South Gujarat University 2 similar to that of an intoxicated state. Mental fatigue may be life threatening, especially when the sufferer has to perform some tasks, such as driving a vehicle or operating heavy machinery. Fatigue among training doctors is a serious public health concern; both for the health of the junior doctor and patients under their responsibility. Signs of Fatigue โ€ข Tiredness, โ€ข Sleepiness, including falling asleep against your will ("micro" sleeps), โ€ข Irritability, โ€ข Depression, โ€ข Giddiness, โ€ข Loss of appetite, โ€ข Digestive problems, and โ€ข Increased susceptibility to illness.
  • 3. INDUSTRIAL PSYCHOLOGY Veer Narmad South Gujarat University 3 Causes of fatigue There are many, many causes of fatigue. Work-related factors may include long work hours, long hours of physical or mental activity, insufficient break time between shifts, inadequate rest, excessive stress or a combination of these factors. Sometimes, a sleep disorder may cause fatigue. These conditions include: Insomnia People who suffer from insomnia often complain that they cannot fall asleep, or cannot stay asleep for a full night. They may frequently wake up during the night, wake up too early, not able to fall asleep at night, or have difficultly getting back to sleep if woken. Either way, they do not feel rested. Insomnia can be both short term (in response to a stressful event or change in environment) or long term. Sleep Apnea Most cases of sleep apnea are caused by a condition called "Obstructive Sleep Apnea". Sleep apnea is a breathing disorder in which there are brief interruptions (lasting a minimum of 10 seconds) in breathing during sleep. This condition is caused by a narrowing (or collapse) of the throat or upper airway during sleep. This narrowing restricts or prevents breathing while you are sleeping (air cannot flow into or out of your nose and mouth even though your body continues to try to breathe). With sleep apnea, there are frequent interruptions to sleep making your sleep unrestful. People often complain of early morning headaches and excessive daytime sleepiness. Symptoms of sleep apnea include: โ€ข chronic, loud snoring, โ€ข gasping or choking while sleeping, โ€ข excessive daytime sleepiness, and โ€ข personality changes or difficulties thinking. Restless Legs Syndrome With restless legs syndrome, people report sensations of creeping, crawling, pulling, or tingling which cause an irresistible urge to move their legs. This phenomenon usually happens as a person is trying to fall asleep, making sleep difficult. Movements may also occur during sleep, partially waking the person (even though they might not "notice") and disrupting sleep patterns.
  • 4. INDUSTRIAL PSYCHOLOGY Veer Narmad South Gujarat University 4 Narcolepsy Narcolepsy is a rare condition associated with sudden sleep "attacks" where a person will have an uncontrollable urge to sleep many times in one day. Other Situations Substances such as nicotine, caffeine, and alcohol can affect the quality of sleep. Caffeine can remain in the body for about 3 to 7 hours and may affect sleep. Alcohol may shorten the time to fall asleep, but it disrupts later in the night. Nicotine also can disrupt sleep and reduce total sleep time. Other substances such as over-the-counter medications or prescriptions may also affect sleep. For example, long-acting benzodiazepines (drugs used to relieve anxiety or insomnia) may contribute to daytime sleepiness.
  • 5. INDUSTRIAL PSYCHOLOGY Veer Narmad South Gujarat University 5 The effects of fatigue Fatigue can affect all areas of your life. You may be too tired to take part in daily activities, relationships and social events. It affects everyone differently and can cause many different symptoms. Some people find their fatigue is very mild and doesnโ€™t interfere much with their daily life. But for others, itโ€™s very disruptive. Because fatigue cannot be "measured", it is difficult to separate the effects of long working hours or lack of sleep to any changes in accident or injury rates. The different levels of fatigue are described in the fatigue diary. Some of the more common effects of fatigue include: โ€ข Difficulty doing the smallest chores. Even everyday activities such as brushing your hair, showering or cooking can seem impossible. โ€ข Reduced decision making ability, โ€ข Reduced ability to do complex planning, โ€ข Reduced communication skills, โ€ข Reduced productivity / performance, โ€ข Reduced attention and vigilance, โ€ข Reduced ability to handle stress on the job, โ€ข Reduced reaction time - both in speed and thought, โ€ข Loss of memory or the ability to recall details, โ€ข Failure to respond to changes in surroundings or information provided, โ€ข Increased tendency for risk-taking, โ€ข Increased forgetfulness, โ€ข Increased errors in judgment, โ€ข Increased sick time, absenteeism, rate of turnover, โ€ข Increased medical costs, and โ€ข Increased accident rates. Fatigue can affect the way you think and feel. You may find it impossible to concentrate on anything, which can affect school or your job. If youโ€™re having trouble concentrating, it can also affect things that you usually enjoy doing. Even reading or watching TV can be difficult.
  • 6. INDUSTRIAL PSYCHOLOGY Veer Narmad South Gujarat University 6 Money may become a problem if you need to take time off work or stop working completely. Fatigue can affect your relationships. You may spend less time with friends and family, or spend more time sleeping. It may make you become impatient with people around you, or you may avoid going out or being with friends because itโ€™s too much effort.
  • 7. INDUSTRIAL PSYCHOLOGY Veer Narmad South Gujarat University 7 How can a workplace help keep workers "alert"? Fatigue is increased by: โ€ข Dim lighting, โ€ข Limited visual acuity (i.e., due to weather), โ€ข High temperatures, โ€ข High noise, โ€ข High comfort, โ€ข Tasks which must be sustained for long periods of time, and โ€ข Work tasks which are long, repetitive, paced, difficult, boring and monotonous. Workplaces can help by providing environments which have good lighting, comfortable temperatures, and reasonable noise levels. Work tasks should provide a variety of interest and tasks should change throughout the shift. If extended hours/overtime are common, remember to consider the time required to commute home, meal preparation, eating, socializing with family, etc. Workplaces may wish to consider providing: โ€ข On-site accommodations, โ€ข Prepared meals for workers, and โ€ข Facilities where employees can take a nap before they drive home.
  • 8. INDUSTRIAL PSYCHOLOGY Veer Narmad South Gujarat University 8 Techniques of lessening Physical fatigue All work involving physical expenditure of energy, fatigue is an inevitable effect of work and all that can be done in such situations is to avoid unnecessary fatigue. There are two ways in which this can be done. They are as follows. The first one is related with the problem of machines and tools and their arrangement in such a way that human energy is used with maximum economy. A lot of work in this direction can be done by TIME AND MOTION studies. The second one is to arrange the hours of work, work week, shift work and rest pauses in such a way that the detrimental effects of fatigue are reduced. This way we can reduce unnecessary fatigue with the proper study about the Time and motion and the study of work hours, work week, shift work, rest pauses etc.
