Here are a few examples of racism that still exist in America today:
- Racial profiling by law enforcement. Studies have shown that black and Latino people are more likely to be stopped, searched, arrested and sentenced harshly than white people, even when accounting for non-racial factors. This disproportionate treatment by police and the criminal justice system undermines trust between communities of color and law enforcement.
- Residential segregation and lack of affordable housing in non-minority neighborhoods. Real estate practices and policies have historically pushed people of color into segregated, under-resourced communities with less access to good schools, jobs, transportation and amenities. The effects of this systemic housing discrimination linger today.

1 Digging Into Data White Paper Trading ConsequencesDawn Cook
This white paper describes a project that used text mining techniques on a corpus of over 11 million digitized historical documents to create a database and visualizations about global commodity trading in the 19th century. Key findings include:
1) The project identified almost 2,000 commodities regularly traded, far more than typically studied by historians.
2) Text mining was challenging due to optical character recognition errors, requiring new tools.
3) Visualizations effectively displayed commodity relationships to locations and time, revealing new patterns about global economic connections and environmental impacts.
4) The database and visualizations are ready for historians to generate new research questions from the vast amount of information.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has revolutionized the creation of images and videos, enabling the generation of highly realistic and imaginative visual content. Utilizing advanced techniques like Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) and neural style transfer, AI can transform simple sketches into detailed artwork or blend various styles into unique visual masterpieces. GANs, in particular, function by pitting two neural networks against each other, resulting in the production of remarkably lifelike images. AI's ability to analyze and learn from vast datasets allows it to create visuals that not only mimic human creativity but also push the boundaries of artistic expression, making it a powerful tool in digital media and entertainment industries.

2. The Ethical Issues Of Physician Assisted Suicide
Physician Assisted Suicide
Physician Assisted Suicide Is it Right or Wrong? The ethical issues of physician assisted suicide are
both emotional and controversial, as it ranks right up there with abortion. Some argue physician
assisted suicide is ethically permissible for a dying person who has choosing to escape the unbearable
suffering at the end of life. Furthermore, it is the physician s duty to alleviate the patients suffering,
which at times justifies providing aid in dying. These arguments rely a great deal on the respect for
individual autonomy, which recognizes the rights of competent people to choose the timing and
manner of their death, when faced with terminal illness.
Others have argued that physician assisted suicide is not ethically permissible, because it contradicts
the traditional duty of physician s to preserve life and to do no harm. Furthermore, many argue that if
physician assisted suicide is legalized, abuses would take place, because as social forces condone the
practice, it will lead to slippery slope that forces (PAS) on the disabled, elderly, and the poor, instead
of providing more complex and expensive palliative care. While these arguments continue with no end
in sight, more and more of the terminally ill cry out in agony, for the right to end their own suffering.
While the main issue that surrounds physician assisted suicide is pain control, for the terminally ill,
proponents are still unwilling to compromise. However, if both proponents and

Capital Punishment is a form of punishment used to put criminals to death for certain serious crimes.
Capital Punishment has been around for many years in different variations by putting an individuals to
death, because many people are afraid to die. However, over the years problems have risen about the
ethical issues on whether killing someone in terms of a punishment is ethical or unethical. Therefore,
since the death penalty is within the states, some states decided to opt out of being a death penalty
state. The states that decided to remain as a death penalty state were those who crime and murder rates
are continually increasing over the years; however, the states that decided to opt out have low crimes
rates and sees imprisonment as deterrence rather than death.
The state of Kentucky is one of the states within the United States who still support the death penalty.
On January 1, 1975 the death penalty was reinstated within the state of Kentucky. However, issues on
whether putting someone to death is immoral and has become a leading topic in the correctional

also is capital punishment still accepted within the society we live in today. After reviewing the bill
that was proposed, Rep. Jesse Crenshaw, a former prosecutor who once supported capital punishment,

They stingily agreed to integrate. The main theme of the book was racial tension. The white folks
treated the black folks like they were dirt. Even older white folks treated the younger black children
like dirt. I do not understand how any adult could hit a child, especially because of their color. One
instance that really bothered me was when a white man almost raped Melba because she was black. It
was in 1954, immediately after Brown vs. the Board of Education decision had came down. After that
she said she was going to read the newspaper because she wanted to know when white men got angry.
And sometimes she had to spend her own nickel for it. Another theme throughout the book could be
determination. The nine children were determined to carry out integration. They did not give up. Some
older black folks in the neighborhood faulted the nine children for the actual attempt of integration.
They claimed that it made it harder than it already was to be black and living in Little Rock. For

6. The Ivory Trade and the Slaughter of Elephants
The Ivory Trade and the Slaughter of Elephants
It is hard to equate an austere piano recital with the murder of hundreds of thousands of wild animals.
For that matter, it is equally as difficult to relate that horrific scene with my grandmother s antique
hairpins, but the fact of the matter is that the creamy ivory that is so cherished as a sign of wealth,
culture, and tradition is really the result of the work of poachers. How can those delicate hairpins be
the topic of international debate and black market trade? The answer is rooted in the history of one of
the world s oldest markets: the ivory trade.
Ivory is a form of dentin, the same material that is in human teeth. Since the time of the sixth dynasty
of ancient Egypt, ivory ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Between the years of 1979 and 1989 the African elephant population had declined from 1.3 million to
625,000, and the price had doubled per kilogram (Nave 1). The ban shut down all legal trade of the
commodity, but black markets in ivory began to flourish. According to Kreuter, poaching has
increased in at least five of the nine countries studied by the African Elephant Specialist Group in
1994. In a few countries, such as Zimbabwe, Zambia, and South Africa, programs have been put in
place to give people incentives to maintain the elephant population (Kreuter 1). These incentives have
placed a value on live elephants for the Africans who have therefore helped to maintain the numbers
of these endangered creatures.
The above mentioned programs are only in place in a few African countries. In many others, the ban is
an often side stepped nuisance in the illegal trade of ivory. Over the past several years, the illegal
ivory of over one thousand African and thirty nine Asian elephants has been recovered en route to
Japan alone. The ivory of over three thousand elephants has been recovered worldwide (Kioko 1). In
1997, in an attempt to stop the illegal trade, MIKE (Monitoring of Illegal Killing of Elephants) and
ETIS (Elephant Trade Information System) have been organized. There efforts, although well planned
and well funded are still ineffective (Kioko 2). With continued funding and support, the hope is that

the Aum Shinrikyo faith, as well as Asahara, had been obsessed with some of the philosophies of the

The religion also holds the claim that Asahara is the only person to have attained the highest level of

of extrasensory experiences are also included in the Aum Shinrikyo faith, with clairvoyance,
levitation, and the ability to see through walls being some of these extrasensory abilities that Asahara
promoted and claimed to have (news.bbc.co.uk; fas.org). According to John Pike, the Aum Shinrikyo
faith strongly promoted Shiva, the god of destruction, and thus put a particular emphasis on
Armageddon, or the end of the world. Asahara claimed salvation from this destruction for those who
reached higher levels of consciousness by going through him, the Supreme Master ; their reincarnated
states would hold a special status amongst others. Apparently, this Armageddon was going to involve a
third world war in 1997 that would be initiated between Japan and the United States; one supposed
goal of Aum Shinrikyo was their involved their salvation activities during this time and the revival of
the Japanese nation after the collapse of their country. Members of Aum Shinrikyo were also very anti
Semitic, and put part of the blame for this onto the Jews (fas.org). Putting the skeptical claims of

9. Psychological And Psychological Noise In Everything I...
Noise Everything I Never Told You is about an interracial American family trying to piece together the
fragments of the life, Lydia, the middle child, had before she tragically died at age 16. Throughout the
book, all the characters seem to face psychological and semantic noise when communicating with
each other. Psychological noise, also known as internal noise, refers to a communicator s biases,
prejudices, or feelings towards a person or message (West 13). Semantic noise occurs when senders
and receivers apply different meaning to the same message (West 14). It takes the death of Lydia for
the family to realize how little they truly know about each other and how noise kept them from
understanding one another their whole lives. Marilyn s psychological noise stemmed from her
childhood and affected everyone in her family. Marilyn s mother projected her desires onto her
daughter growing up, expecting Marilyn to find a Harvard man and settle down (Ng 30). Marilyn
would later in life, push her own desires on Lydia not realizing the life Marilyn wanted is not
necessarily the life Lydia wants. Marilyn says things to Lydia like only if you want to but the only
reason Lydia really says yes, is to keep her mother from running away again when she finds the
cookbook (Ng 138). Marilyn wanted Lydia not to feel like she had to fall into housewife duties like
her own mother had wanted, where Lydia just thought of her mom s tears on the page in the cookbook
where it claims there is a love little girls have for cooking with their mother. Marilyn said that Lydia
always seemed happy and eager to please, but Lydia was just putting on a smile in hope her mother
would never leave again (Ng 119). Lydia blamed herself all those years after Marilyn ran away and
even after Marilyn was back. All Lydia wanted was her family to stay together but Marilyn wanted her
to be exceptional. Marilyn experienced semantic noise on her wedding day when she told her husband,
James, what her mother said about marrying someone more like her. A message that Marilyn had just
brushed off, James had carried for years (Ng 203). Marilyn and James heard the same message that
day but experienced it in different ways, driving a wedge between them. James

Historians tend to view events in a black or white approach. That kind of thinking would describe

American Revolution. In reality, Bacon was an Indian hating landowner who was part of the nobility,
just not part of Gov. Berkeley s in crowd although he was a relative of Berkeley. Gov. Berkeley of
Virginia and his cronies in the great planter oligarchy [1] ran every aspect of life in Virginia. Berkeley

were controlled by Berkeley cronies. He sanctioned unprovoked attacks against friendly tribes,
instituted trading restrictions and a general policy of all out war against Indians which he began in

Bacon. Instead of trying to end the wars, Berkeley built defensive forts, which prolonged it. [3]Bacon
s plantation and the plantations of his friend s, were unprotected and isolated on the western frontier.
They asked for protection against Indian attacks and raids on their plantations and petitioned for an
armed troop. Berkeley denied and then outlawed all such petitions. Bacon, along with two other
landowners decided to raise their own army and fight the Indians themselves. He began a march to
track hostile Indians, killing friendly Indians by mistake. According to Rothbard (2011), when the
three founders, Bacon, Byrd, and Crew, and their friends ran into some militiamen at Jordan s Point,
the militia decided to mutiny and follow Bacon. When Bacon came back home most of the Virginians
viewed him as a hero.

12. The Bubonic Renaissance And The Renaissance
The Renaissance was a crucial part of the change from the hierarchy and social order that dominated
The Dark Ages to the social mobility that developed when the Early Modern Period began. Due to a
myriad of factors, such as the Bubonic plague, which had devastating effects on the population during
the Late Middle Ages. This combined with the nobility s need for peasant labor resulted in common
people demanding higher wages and increasing the prices of their products. Likewise, skilled workers
could charge more money, since they no longer had as much competition (Perry 189). As a result, the
common people were able to engage in social and economic development, which lead to spiritual
advancement. These changes were reflected throughout Renaissance literature, such as Hamlet by
Shakespeare, Giovanni Pico Della Mirandola s Oration on the Dignity of Man, and The Prince by
Niccolo Machiavelli, as well as religious works such as the The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri,
The Creation of Adam by Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni, and The 95 Theses by Martin
Luther. These works represent the development of a new social structure that occured in conjunction
with the increase learning during the Renaissance. Throughout the Middle Ages, the common people
were seen as inferior, inheriting their low social status and lacking any opportunity to advance in
society. When the Bubonic plague ravaged the common population and the Renaissance movement

15. Benefits Of Telecommuting At The Industrial Revolution Essay
Prior to the industrial revolution, working from home was a practice that had been around for years
before the phenomenon of telecommuting was created. Telecommuting, a term coined by Jack Nilles
(Venkatraman, 1994), describes someone who works from home or a telecommuting site through the
use of the Internet and other forms of technology. Mirroring the past, many people telework today
because it is required by their occupation or simply because it is convenient. Whatever the reason may
be, the effects of telework as a prominent practice permit it to be considered a norm in our society.
With telecommuting becoming a fast growing ubiquitous phenomenon, it should be considered the
norm for suitable occupations (e.g. sales representative, customer service representative, and software
developer) because of the benefits it affords the employee/individual, the employer/organization, and
society.
Benefits of Telecommuting towards the Employee/Individual
Telecommuting should be the new normal because of the benefits such as autonomy, increased
productivity, and savings in time and expenses it affords the employee/individual. A major aspect of
telecommuting is that it provides individuals with autonomy or independence over their craft. The
absence of a person of authority directly monitoring an employee gives the employee the sense of
control. With this sense of autonomy placed on an individual, they are expected to discipline
themselves and dictate their work schedule at home in the

Do the Right Thing
Films document critical historical events, entertain masses and educate the public on particular
practices. Depending on the theme and intent of the director, films have a substantial contribution to
the human civilization. Do the Right Thing directed by Spike Lee is a1989 American comedy drama
that highlights the racial tension in the ancient society. The film depicts a typical day for Lee in
Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn when strains between the whites, Indians and African Americans were
on the rise. The production of the film took place when the issues regarding the African Americans
were largely ignored. Therefore, the setting of the video in a black dominated community illuminates
the style as well as outcomes of good and bad (Townsend). It addresses the stereotypical notions that
defined Africans as dangerous and violent by portraying a picture of hospitable characters. Other than

Necessarily, it entails the use of resources and amenities while taking into consideration the

society justifies that it met the standards of sustainability and widespread use. Second, the production
in the black community brings out uniqueness, resources and virtuous lifestyles of the peoples
including the Afrocentric dressing (Townsend). In terms of regional development, using the local
capitals to build the capacity and participatory approaches to decision making improves the
practicality of the interventions. The film meets this threshold because it explores the individuality of
a particular society, the systems, and institutions. This aspect is useful in designing workable strategies

Should Students be Able to Use the Dialect They Choose? The Conference on College Composition
and Communication discusses two very important and controversial questions within their article
Students Right to Their Own Language : What should the schools do about the language habits of
students who come from a wide variety of social, economic, and cultural backgrounds? (2), and
Should the schools try to uphold language variety, or to modify it, or to eradicate it? (2). While for
academic writing purposes students should be expected to use standard American dialect, it is
important to respect the diversity and various heritages throughout the country by allowing students to
use the dialect they choose when speaking. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Allowing students to speak dialects they chose when communicating with peers is acceptable outside
of the classroom and in informal class discussions because there are no requirements that are
necessary to reach within casual communication. If people were not able to speak the dialect they
prefer, we would be rejecting them of their own lifestyles because we would not be allowing the
freedom which the United States promises.
Standard American dialect is necessary in academic writing for three key reasons. First, the ability to
use standard American dialect is a skill that people living in America should obtain because it is the
most spoken and written language across the country. Having the knowledge to use standard American
dialect will be helpful in many different situations, such as in the classroom and business world. In
addition, being able to write using this dialect, will guide in writing a stronger, clearer paper, as well
as ensuring unity between all academic writing. I disagree with the following statement from Students
Right to Their Own Language : We affirm strongly that teachers must have the experiences and
training that will enable them to respect diversity and uphold the right of students to their own
language (3). Teachers should not have to go through an immense amount of training

The writer s fundamental purpose of this article was that Mills doesn t have the response to the

Newfoundland society. As a result of these strong cultural ties, commercial and subsistence sealing
continues to exist through legal policy by demand from both government and society. The policies that
govern seal hunting are based on a sustained yield principle that does not compromise the harvest for
future generations, and are thus in accordance with sustainable aspects of resource development.
Economic benefits gained from the seal hunt include an increase in trading relationships for Canada

Bowlby studied the effects of short term deprivation, he concluded that the child goes through three
stages of distress. Protest, the child kicks and screams in order to prevent their mother from leaving,
Despair the child appears to be apathetic but it still angry about the separation and detachment, when
the separation continues the child begins to respond to others again, when reunited with the mother at
this stage the child may have to develop a relationship over again. Long term deprivation is a
permanent separation through death or divorce. Bowlby concluded that the most common effect of
long term deprivation is separation anxiety. Separation anxiety may lead to aggressive behaviour,
clingy behaviour, detachment and psychosomatic reactions. Divorce can have a huge effect on a child.
Divorce is a long process that can affect a child for a period of years. Most children are affected by
divorce but the process can be generally more difficult for boys. According to Hetherington and

Moreover, I will respond to a few anti Pell grant criticisms and elaborate on how changes to the
program may make it more effective.
The Federal Pell Grant Program s Purpose: Addressing the Economic Market Failure The Federal Pell
Grant program s purpose is to provide financially needy students with a foundation of post secondary
educational support. As low income earners continue to lack the skills necessary for skilled labor
careers, and the demand for low skilled labor decreases, the wage gap will increase. As the wage gap
increases, so would the need for effective social welfare funded by the government via taxpayer
dollars. Pell grants are meant to offer students with an opportunity to break the cycle of being
economically disadvantaged, and the program gives them a chance to improve their economic
situation, and thus, society as a whole.
The Federal Pell Grant Program: What it is and How it Works
Pell grants are federal subsidies given to students primarily on a financial need basis to help them
invest in higher education. The money is not meant to be repaid like a loan. In 2015, the program
provided a maximum of $5500 in grant money to undergraduate students. The maximum has risen a
few hundred dollars since then, but the amount covers the costs of community college tuition more
completely than for a 4 year institution. Low attainments rates can be attributed, in part, to low income
families being unaware of the cost of college, thus, not

As we age we gain more knowledge, experience, and become wiser individuals. Your views on a
subject may change because of your new found knowledge or experience. A clear example of this is
Langston Hughes and his change in attitude towards racial equality in America as expressed through
three of his poems, I, Too, Sing America , Let America Be America Again , and A Dream Deferred .
Langston Hughes wrote this first poem, I, Too, Sing America , when he was in his 20 s and still very
young. The theme of this poem is that blacks will soon get equal rights. Hughes set a confident and
bold tone in this poem because it sounds like he is demanding equality. In the poem, he starts by
talking about how African Americans are discriminated against, then he states that tomorrow he will
be eating with the whites and they will be ashamed of themselves for ever discriminating against
blacks after the whites see their true beauty. Due to the tone, the speaker seems young and
charismatic. The speaker of the poem also plays a major role on the perspective, because the speaker
represents how Hughes felt about the subject. In the poem, the speaker is ... Show more content on

The reoccurring theme in the poem is let America be the American dream. Throughout the poem,
Hughes contrasts his hopes for America with the reality of life of being a minority. He even talks
about immigrants that traveled to America with dreams of freedom but those dreams have never come
true. Compared to I, Too, Sing America , the theme in this poem seems as if Hughes is losing but still
has hope for America. At the start of the poem, Hughes is begging for the American dream to become
reality. But by the end he starts talking about how we must take back America to make it great again.

early penal settlements are described as brutal places for most convicts, for many. Transportation was

Ideas for Useful and Practical Christmas Presents
Again the season on Christmas draws ever closer. Now the sudden question of Oh my GOSH, what do

I will begin with what we could give young girls from about 10 30, or even a little older.
If you know that the girl has been banned from using make up, than it s probably not the best gift to
give, even though it may seem like the most obvious gift. Oftern a make up set may also stay fogottern
in their wardrobe, especially if they have loads already. A good gift for them could be a pair of hair
straighteners, or a curling tong. These could be great for when they get a little older, and start feeling

Iris Patterns As time moves along and society becomes more technological, more techniques of
solving crime with advanced technology are practiced. Not only can we solve crime with fingerprints
and behavioral characteristics such as gait, voice, signature and odor, but we can also solve crime with
the use of iris recognition. Iris recognition is a biometric identification method of identifying
individuals based on their iris patterns. It has slowly been emerging, since 1994 into biometric
technology as an alternate means to do the same job as fingerprinting. This paper will go into quite a
bit of detail on the iris recognition system and explain the development of the iris and what the iris s
function is for the eye and answer the questions that follow: are there any changes to the iris between
birth and adulthood or even after death, how does the iris recognition system operate and what
countries, if any, are currently exercising the use of the iris recognition system and how is it working
out for them, is the iris recognition system reliable and do contacts and glasses effect the system in
any way, and finally, can iris recognition be applied to an iris after death?
First, one may be wondering what the function of the iris is in the eye. The iris is the plainly visible
colored ring shaped membrane behind the cornea made entirely of connective tissues, smooth muscle
fibers and pigments. It begins to form in the third month of gestation (development in the womb). The
pigments of the eye are made of melanin (the same pigment that gives skin its color). The amount of
pigment in the eye is what gives the eye its color. Lack of pigment gives one no color at all. These are
the pink eyes of albinisms. Very little pigment gives the eye a blue color and then in increasing
amounts of pigment give one green, hazel, and finally brown. The iris also controls the amount of
light that reaches the retina. It has an adjustable round opening in the center that is called a pupil. It is
responsible for controlling the diameter and size of that pupil. With the help of the pupil, the iris s
function is to regulate the amount of light that gets into the eye. Too much or not
