WALL
 The structural elements of building
which is used to give partition in a
building are known as wall. It also
provides safety and shelter.
Generally, walls are classified into
two types outer wall and inner walls.

 DIFFERENT TYPES
OF WALLS:-
 Walls are divided into following types according to
technical point of view:
1.Load Bearing Wall
2.Drop Wall or Non-load bearing wall
3.Shear Wall
4.Retaining Wall
5.Brick Masonry Wall

6. Stone Masonry
Wall
7. Core Wall
8. Precast Wall
9. Parapet Wall
10.Curtain Wall
11.Boundary Wall

 LOAD BEARING WALL:
 The whole structure is rested on
walls instead of column.
 Load transfer from slab to walls
directly through beam.
 Strip foundation is adopted for the
load-bearing type of wall.

NON-LOAD BEARING WALL:
 This type of wall doesn’t support floor or
roof loads above them.
 It won't carry any of the weight of the
structure above it.
 the best example of this type of wall are
partition wall in the building.
 It can be shortened or removed without
affecting the building structure.

 SHEAR WALL:
 Constructed around the lift pit, water sump or
staircase to retain the soil.
 Only bears two pressure on it either Wind and
Soil pressure or Wind and Water pressure.
 Used to carry lateral force exerted on the
structure due to wind, earthquake etc.
 Best example overhead water tank in which
internal pressure created by water and external
pressure created by wind, shear wall resist all

 RETAINING WALL:
 Built to maintain the unequal level of
the ground on its two faces.
 It is constructed around the plot below
the ground level to retain the soil at one
end.
 It can be made of RCC or CRS.
Some other type of retaining walls are

 BRICK MASONRY WALL:
 The wall which is constructed with the help
of bricks is known as brick masonry wall.
 Masonry is used to join the bricks in the
wall.
 The thickness of the wall could be 20cm or
10cm.
 In a single stretch it should not exceed
more than 4m, if exceeds a column must be

 STONE MASONRY:
 The wall which is constructed with the
help of Stone is known as Stone
masonry.
 It is generally used abutments of
bridges, compound walls or boundary
walls.

 CORE WALL:
 Constructed from foundation to height
of the building.
 the wall itself acts as a column
 it is built to carry the lateral forces
exerted on the structure.
 it is a combination of shear walls

 PRECAST WALL:
 the ready-made wall which are cast in
factory and bought to site to install it.

 PARAPET WALL:
 wall which are constructed on the
top floor of the building.

and other public buildings.

 BOUNDARY WALL:
 it is constructed all around the
building.
