Abstract: Engaging schools in walking and bicycling efforts can be difficult given competing education priorities and frequent staff and volunteer turn-over. Attendees will learn about strategies for influencing school boards and policy opportunities at the district level.

The KidsWalk Coalition in New Orleans worked from 2010 to 2014 to promote walking and bicycling through partnerships between non-profits, the city government, and community organizations. Using Data to Tailor Communications for Addressing Childhood Obesity in MissouriJSI
Healthy Schools Healthy Communities is a public health initiative sponsored by the Missouri Foundation for Health that targets high-risk communities and focuses on policy and environmental change to reduce childhood obesity.
The program conducted a household survey to establish commonly held attitudes about obesity, and policies that relate to health and environment. The results were analysed and used to create a communications campaign to raise public awareness and engagement in these issues.
This presentation was produced by Rhonda Smythe (Missouri Foundation for Health) and Tammy Calise (John Snow, Inc.) for the 2016 Active Living Research Conference.

Achieving Equitable Outcomes with Results-Based Accountability Clear Impact
Achieving equitable outcomes is an integral part of the implementation of Results Based Accountability (RBA). Lutzker Lecture featured Dr. Judith Carta, the associate director of the Juniper Gardens Children’s Project, professor of Special Education at the University of Kansas, and a Senior Scientist in the Institute for Life Span Studies. Her science focuses on developing strategies to minimize the effects of poverty on children’s language and social outcomes and developing practices that teachers and parents can use to promote children’s early learning particularly in vulnerable populations.
The community planning partnership in Perth and Kinross, Scotland conducted the largest ever survey of children and young people in the region, called Evidence2Success, to understand their needs better. Over 800 parents of young children and 8,500 students aged 9-15 were surveyed about topics like health, well-being, family, and school. This provided an accurate picture of issues facing children, such as disengagement in some students and early substance use. The partnership is now using this data to identify the most effective services to improve outcomes in five key areas of children's well-being.

IDRA’s 2015 Annual Report highlights the ways in which 2015 was a pivotal year for children both in terms of progress and deepening disparities. It shows how IDRA and our partners are valuing children of all backgrounds by keeping a sharp focus on educational quality and equity. We are producing research and analyses that matter and putting in place effective programs, strategies, policies and solutions to secure public education that works for all children.
This proposal requests funding to expand the Children's Defense Fund Freedom School models of after-school and summer school programs in the Rochester Central School District. The Freedom School model provides academic enrichment with a literacy focus for low-income students, utilizing best practices including an integrated reading curriculum, servant leadership development, civic engagement, family involvement, and wellness activities. Evaluation data shows that Freedom School students significantly improve their literacy skills and love of reading. The proposal aims to address the lack of high-quality after-school programs in RCSD, where only 12% of eligible students currently have access, by expanding a program that has demonstrated success in the district.

The researchers used Jim Collins' approach from his book "Good to Great" of identifying top-performing organizations and comparing them to matched peers to uncover success factors. They identified 12 elementary and middle schools in Arizona that were outperforming expectations based on their demographic profiles and compared them to schools serving similar student populations that were less successful, to determine what practices differentiated the higher achieving schools.

Upstream conducted assessments of tobacco retailers and advocated for policies requiring retailer licenses, restricting youth e-cigarette use and sales, and increasing tobacco taxes. They are supporting bills prohibiting e-cigarette sales to minors, requiring statewide tobacco retailer licensing, allocating tobacco settlement funding to prevention, and restricting flavored tobacco. Upstream also aims to ban junk food marketing in schools, strengthen farm to school and school garden programs, provide dental health services in childcare centers, improve youth transportation options, and conduct health impact assessments on proposed policies.
Plan is implementing a project called "Collective Action to Promote Non-Violent and Protective Society for Children" across multiple locations in the Philippines.
