of body structures
Based on the principles of nuclear magnetic resonance
First MRI done in 1997, took 5 hours to produce an image
The most recent big advances in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology
have been on the software side, enabling faster contrast scans, greatly simplified
cardiac imaging workflows, and allowing MR scans of the lungs.
This technique gives users the flexibility to manipulate MR images retrospectively,
leading to significant time savings, fewer rescans and therefore cost savings, which
combined can assist the clinician in making a more decisive diagnosis.

Lung MRI Now Possible
 Lung MRI has been problematic since the lungs are filled with air
and there is a low density of the hydrogen atoms required to
create MR images. For this reason, computed tomography (CT)
has traditionally been used for lung imaging.
 Toshiba introduced its Ultrashort Echo Time (UTE) sequence for
dedicated pulmonary MRI.
 UTE allows clinicians to view tissue with very short relaxation
times and high susceptibility regions where signals generally
disappear too quickly for accurate MR imaging.

 GE Healthcare has come up with Cardiac
Examination MRI
 Time reduction from 1 hr to less than 10 min
 Requires resolution of just the chest
 Data processing through Cloud Technology- real
time visualization and processing of data
 Data availability
 Free breathing for patients instead of multiple
breath holds
