Treat data as an asset and gain a competitive advantage. Your Challenge Despite the growing focus on data, many organizations struggle to develop an effective strategy for their data assets. This is due to their intangible nature and varying use across the business. Data Management is a business process managed by IT. This creates a challenge for IT as it is required to create and manage complex systems of operations that link closely to integral business operations. Our Advice Critical Insight Data Management is not one size fits all. Cut through the noise related to Data Management and create a strategy and process that is right for your organization. Have the business drive your Data Management project. It all starts and ends with Data Governance. At a minimum, invest in Data Governance initiatives. Impact and Result Coordination between IT and the business will create a Data Management strategy that understands and satisfies the data requirements of the business. Data Management requirements and initiatives will be derived from the following: business goals and strategic plans, current capability assessments, business drivers for data, understanding of market and technology opportunities, and a clear understanding of the business’s drivers regarding data. Creating a clear Data Management Strategy and developing a roadmap of initiatives will allow IT to create a plan for how to bridge the gap between IT and the business and create a Data Management framework that supports the business’s immediate and long-term data requirements.

Noise to Signal - The Biggest Problem in Data

Our ability to produce, ingest and store data has grown exponentially, but our ability to parse out insights from data has not. In the 90s, an organization’s data would live in a data warehouse with an ETL pipeline and one reporting layer on top. From Natural Language to Structured Solr Queries using LLMs

This talk draws on experimentation to enable AI applications with Solr. One important use case is to use AI for better accessibility and discoverability of the data: while User eXperience techniques, lexical search improvements, and data harmonization can take organizations to a good level of accessibility, a structural (or “cognitive” gap) remains between the data user needs and the data producer constraints. That is where AI – and most importantly, Natural Language Processing and Large Language Model techniques – could make a difference. This natural language, conversational engine could facilitate access and usage of the data leveraging the semantics of any data source. The objective of the presentation is to propose a technical approach and a way forward to achieve this goal. The key concept is to enable users to express their search queries in natural language, which the LLM then enriches, interprets, and translates into structured queries based on the Solr index’s metadata. This approach leverages the LLM’s ability to understand the nuances of natural language and the structure of documents within Apache Solr. The LLM acts as an intermediary agent, offering a transparent experience to users automatically and potentially uncovering relevant documents that conventional search methods might overlook. The presentation will include the results of this experimental work, lessons learned, best practices, and the scope of future work that should improve the approach and make it production-ready.
