As a human service worker, you are almost certain to have clients who are people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and persons living with AIDS (PWAs). This is true because AIDS affects people of all ages, sexual orientations, and ethnic and minority groups and because the needs of PWAs and people living with HIV are numerous and span virtually all human service programs. Because AIDS is an illness, there are medical needs. Since most PWAs eventually must stop working, they have income needs. The number of children who have HIV is growing, and these young people may have educational needs. For several reasons, there are likely to be psychological and social needs.
First of all, AIDS occurs primarily in people younger than fifty, which means that PWAs must deal with a fatal illness at an early age. Second, AIDS is found mainly in marginalized people such as homosexual men, injection drug users, and racial and ethnic minorities. Still another reason that PWAs may have psychological needs is that many of them will have many friends who are seriously ill or who have died. The effects of such losses are potentially enormous. Thus, the entire human service system is involved in working with people living with AIDS and HIV. So, as you enter the field, it is important that you know about HIV and AIDS and society’s reactions to the disease.
Working with people with AIDS and HIV presents particular challenges. Many people with this illness will not have close ties with their families who may have turned their backs on what is perceived to be a social embarrassment. Most will be poor, some because they were poor when they became sick and others because the disease is impoverishing. Death from AIDS-related causes can be horrible; the diseases and infections that affect a PWA can leave people thin and weak and seemingly defenseless for long periods of time. Unlike those with other illnesses, PWAs may be very sick and close to death for a while and then go through long periods of good health when they can lead happy, productive lives. As more cases of AIDS are diagnosed among drug users, more clients may be difficult to work with. Finally, with more women contracting the virus and dying, there are orphaned children who are not infected as well as children who were born with the virus. Many of these children are not or cannot be cared for by their mothers or other relatives.
However, working in the HIV field can be rewarding. As you must know, as you are planning to enter the human service field, all work with people is rewarding. If your interest is in research, you can become involved with learning more about the virus, thus increasing the probability of a cure, a vaccine, or better care for people who are HIV positive. One global health issue that impacts the international health community is HIV. HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. HIV attacks the CD4 cells (T cells) which are cells that help the body to fight off infections. Overtime, the HIV can destroy many of the T cells that the body will not be able to fight off infection leaving it more propense to opportunistic infections. The opportunistic infection leaves the body very weak and signal that the person has AIDS which is the last stage of HIV. There is no cure for HIV, but with adequate medical care, the virus can be controlled. The antiretroviral therapy is the medicine to treat HIV and it can make the viral load undetectable so the person with HIV can live longer. Commonly, people get or transmit HIV through sex and needle or syringe use. The person infected with HIV can transmit it to other person through body fluids such as blood, semen, pre-seminal fluid, rectal fluids, vaginal fluids, and breast milk. HIV can be prevented through abstinence, limiting number of sexual partners , avoiding sharing needles and using condoms. HIV and AIDS are still a problem for United States and other countries around the world. In 2018, “37,832” people were diagnosed with HIV in USA and gay, bisexual and men who have sex with other men accounted for 69% of all new HIV diagnosis. At end of 2016, an estimated “1.1 million” people in USA had HIV with the blacks/African American being the most affected population. In 2018, African Americans accounted for “42%” or all new HIV diagnosis and most cases of HIV occur in metropolitan areas with “500,00” or more people. HIV diagnosis can also vary by age. Young gay and bisexual men ages 13 to 24 accounted for “83%” of all new cases in 2018. Worldwide, there were about “1.7 million” of new cases of HIV in 2018. An estimated “770,000” people died from AIDS related illness in 2018 (CDC, 2019).
Global health plays a role in global security and the security of USA population. The Institute of Medicine 2003, emphasized that USA should improve the capacity to respond to infectious disease threats and to promote an infectious disease surveillance system. The rapid identification and control of the infectious disease can promote health, prevent the spread of the disease and protect the USA population. Many U.S government agencies such as Millennium Development goals provide funding and human resources to global health. In addition, the International health Regulation was implemented with the purpose of preventing international spread of diseases by encouraging countries to work together to share information about known disease (Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, 2020). Introduction
In recent decades, there has been much debate over pandemics and epidemics based on
diseases than ever before. Unfortunately, when it comes to diagnosing diseases such as the
pandemic influenza, AIDS, and Heart Disease issues coexist with the informational technology
that are still subject to the widespread of disease. Diagnosing infectious and dismembered
individuals can be tricky. This process requires extensive research of a particular disease and
treatments for elimination of the disease. Using information technology for pandemics and
epidemics of diseases helps individuals better understand the causes of a particular disease.
Pandemic Influenza
Pandemic influenza is not seasonal flu. Pandemic means prevalent over a whole country
or the world (Caeseele, 2015). In most cases, individuals experience mild cases of the influenza
flu virus. However, sometimes it can turn into a severe respiratory illness. Also, influenza can
spread rapidly from person to person. Some strains are more severe than others and occur every
year killing approximately 36,000 people in the U.S. alone (Hinds, 2015). The influenza virus
spreads by respiratory droplets produced when the infected person talks, coughs, or sneezes.
When an infected person touches another person or surface these areas become contaminated by
the influenza virus.
Vaccines have been implemented to help protect people against the pandemic flu.
However, since there are new strands of the influenza virus each year it is hard to stop the spread
of infection. Information technology includes running diagnostic tests for clinical descriptions
and diagnosis of influenza. Influenza training from the American Public Health Association
provides courses used for strategies for improving rapid influenza testing in ambulatory settings.

susceptibility to opportunistic infections and eventually death (Humble, 2012). This type of
disease is transferred through bodily fluids, but not by contact of human skin. Before an
individual develops the AIDS virus, the individual must possess the human immunodeficiency
virus (HIV). Information technology allows researchers to get an in-depth look of viruses such as
HIV or AIDS. Scientists are having trouble implanting an antigen for HIV. The reason is because
our genes and proteins play a big role in the life cycle of this virus. The World Health
Organization (WHO), an alert and response site, has been working extensively to control the
spread of disease border to border. The WHO is required to report any disease that could cross an
international border (Kolomer, 2012). Program Collaboration and Service Integration (PCSI) at
NCHHSTP, a data security and confidentiality resource, provides a critical foundation for
ensuring the appropriate sharing of data use programs that are increasingly modified policies for
public health achievement.
Heart Disease
The most common type of heart disease is coronary artery disease (CAD), which can lead
to a heart attack. Individuals can greatly reduce their risk for coronary artery disease through
lifestyle changes and, in some cases, medication. By knowing the epidemiology of diseases
provided by public health systems, individuals are more likely to survive. There are public

healthcare websites, podcasts, and organizations that help provide ways to prevent heart disease.
With the use of information technology individuals can be more educated about CAD. By the use
of this information people will be informed about the cause of the disease. This will lead to lower

know staying active, eating healthier, and monitoring weight will lower the chance of them
developing CAD.
Conclusion
Through resources such as Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the diseases
threatening public heath that are associated with the pandemic influenza, AIDS, and heart
disease will hopefully decrease. Community education about these potentially fatal diseases is
crucial to progression away from negative stereotypes. It is furthermore the responsibility of
individuals to carry the medical knowledge provided to them throughout their education using
informational technologies into the world.
