Prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is increasing among pregnant women worldwide. Understanding of GDM pathophysiology and risk factors is helpful to prevent its complications. Known risk factors of GDM are genetic and unhealthy behaviors. Genetic risk factor is associated with pancreatic beta cell dysfunction and impaired carbohydrate and fat metabolism. In addition, unhealthy behaviors including dietary pattern and lack of exercise are known to promote development of diabetes. Overeating of unhealthy diet causes obesity, insulin resistance, and endothelial cell dysfunction. Food containing high sugar, fructose corn syrup, trans fat and advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are associated with insulin resistance and impaired insulin signaling. As a result, elevated of blood glucose glycated hemoglobin, and dyslipidemia occur [1]. Moreover, reduction of adipokines secreting from adipose tissue is associated with insulin resistance, imbalance of glucose production, dysfunction of lipid metabolism, development of atherosclerosis and diabetes.

BACKGROUND: The association between bipolar affective disorder (BAD) and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is elucidated in medical literature. However, what is inconclusive is whether one causes the other and /or the neuroleptics such as sodium valproate could cause PCOS as a side effect. However, to the best of our knowledge, there is a dearth of such case reports in our setting. We therefore report a case of this nature in our setting with the aim of further reemphasizing the likely comorbidity and the need for collaborative multidisciplinary approach during management of such patients. CASE REPORT: We present a case of 34 years old, parity 0+1, human immune virus seronegative, a known patient of bipolar affective disorder (BAD) for 18 years. She was initially started on chlorpromazine and carbamazepine that she used for 13 years and later switched to sodium valproate and sertraline daily due to side effects of chlorpromazine in 2014. She presented with 6 years history of abnormal uterine bleeding and dysmennorrhoea for 2 months. A diagnosis of PCOS was made based on history and confirmed by laboratory and radiological investigations. CONCLUSIONS: Physicians need be aware of the likely comorbidity or sequel and the need for multidisciplinary engagement.

This research article examines alterations in reproductive hormones during pregnancy and the risk of preeclampsia. The study followed 79 preeclamptic women and 80 healthy pregnant controls longitudinally from the third trimester through 6 weeks postpartum. Blood samples were taken at each visit and analyzed for beta-hCG, oestriol, progesterone and prolactin levels. Results showed beta-hCG and oestriol levels were significantly altered in the preeclamptic group compared to controls in the first and third trimesters respectively, indicating these hormones may help identify risk of preeclampsia earlier in pregnancy. This study examined how adverse childhood experiences (ACES) and current life stressors during pregnancy affect maternal health. 45 pregnant women were assessed for ACES, current stressors, and health conditions. ACES were significantly correlated with current health conditions, while current stressors were not. Even after accounting for current stressors, ACES had a trend-level relationship with poorer maternal health. The findings suggest childhood trauma continues to impact maternal health in pregnancy, demonstrating the importance of addressing ACES for pregnant women's well-being.

The avoidance of certain food items and incorrect knowledge regarding their benefits can deprive women from adequate nutrition, especially during the critical periods of pregnancy when it is of great benefit to the mother and her fetus. Major reasons given by the women as to why they avoid some foods include fear of difficult delivery, fear of abortions and dark complexion of the baby. Keeping this as background we have taken up the study on food taboos prevailing among pregnant and lactating women in rural area of Gulbarga.

ASSOCIATED FACTORS TO STUNTED CHILDREN IN PUTRAJAYA

The study identified 11 factors that contribute to stunting in children under 5 years old in Putrajaya, Malaysia. The strongest associated factor was complications during pregnancy like intrauterine growth restriction. Other significant factors included mid-parental height less than 150cm, low household income, low birth weight, use of pacifiers, lower maternal education, unemployed fathers, anemia in children, bottle feeding, lack of minimum dietary diversity, and care by babysitters. Addressing these maternal, socioeconomic, childcare and nutritional factors through community interventions and policies could help reduce the high prevalence of stunting in Putrajaya.
