On November 16th, the author and their group volunteered with Second Harvest Food Bank to glean citrus at a local farm in Plaquemines Parish. The Buford Family had generously donated leftover fresh fruit to help families in need. With the help of volunteers, over 25,000 pounds of fresh fruit was collected to provide to those who may not otherwise have access to fresh produce. Fighting hunger requires a community effort, and volunteer gleaning is important for the food bank's mission of distributing food to those in need across south Louisiana.
SUN Community Schools and their partners in Multnomah County, Oregon provided over 1 million meals last year to those struggling with food insecurity. The meals were distributed through food pantries, harvest shares, and summer meal sites at schools and libraries, with the equivalent of one meal distributed every 30 seconds. 2. Why does it resonate you?
• This summer I joined my church’s missionary group and we went to Mexico to help out with
orphanages in Tijuana and Enseneda. When we first entered the country, Ive never seen
anything like this. The environment was completely different than we have back in the States.
People were living in very poor settings, with no electricity, no water, and hardly a stable roof
over their heads. When we pulled into the orphanages, they were super happy to see us and we
fed them. Most people don’t even get to eat but1-2 meals a day. They lack food, water, shelter,
etc. it was the saddest sight ever.
3. How can your interest be applied
locally?
• There is a bunch of homeless people here in seattle as well. However, there are also many
homeless shelter found here also which can fit in all the homelessness if they desired. If we set
up volunteers to help out at these shelters and create an outreach for the homeless, we can
provide them with plenty of food and water.
4. Where can you make the greatest
contribution?
• Even though Seattle isn’t really big on poverty , there are still however many homeless than
surround the city streets. Mexico would be a great place to start. It really isn’t even that far away
from us, and it really does need our help. They suffer from horrible conditions having no clean
water to drink from or even having food on their tables. If we have more outreaches out in
Mexico, we can help many children and families overcome their problems with hunger and solve
the problem in that country.
5. Is there a feature of social media that
can be uniquely applied to this goal?
• There are many ads on social medias that provide information about countries which suffer
terrible conditions with food, water and shelter. Raising awareness and donations will really help
get the countries most in need to a better condition. There are many posts on facebook,
Instagram, twitter etc. that really do help spread information about countries that suffer.
