Edelman’s 2019 Artificial Intelligence (AI) Survey compares the U.S. general public’s perceptions of AI with those of senior tech executives who have a front row seat on AI development and deployment.
Respondents in both survey groups clearly see the potential upsides of AI, but also significant problems; 60 percent of the general public and 54 percent of tech executives agree that regulation of AI is critical for its safe development.
While 91 percent of tech executives and 84 percent of the general public believe that AI constitutes the next technology revolution, there are very real concerns about its impact on society, business and government. These range from smart toys that could invade children’s privacy to negative impacts on the poor to a loss of human intellectual capabilities.
About a third of both groups believe AI-powered “deepfake” videos (videos or audio recordings that are doctored to alter reality) could lead to an information war that, in turn, might lead to a shooting war (30 percent of the general population; 33 percent of tech executives).
Among the key findings:
54 percent of the general public and 43 percent of tech executives say AI will hurt the poor, and 67 percent and 75 percent, respectively, believe it will benefit the wealthy;
71 percent of the general public and 65 percent of tech executives worry that AI will lead to a loss of human intellectual capabilities;
74 percent of the general population and 72 percent of tech executives say that smarter AI-powered devices will lessen the need for people to interact with others, leading to more isolation;
81 percent within the general population and 77 percent of tech executives believe that advances in AI will likely cause a reactionary response from a society that feels threatened;
51 percent of the general population and 45 percent of tech executives state that AI-powered deepfake videos could mean that no information is believable and that they are highly corrosive to public trust.
The research was developed by the Edelman AI Center of Expertise with input from the World Economic Forum.

Jim Spohrer is the director of IBM's Cognitive OpenTech group. He has a background in physics, computer science, and artificial intelligence. Spohrer discusses the concept of Intelligence Augmentation (IA), which aims to enhance human capabilities through socio-technical systems rather than just develop autonomous AI systems. IA is defined as not just developing technology capabilities but also focusing on more responsible and capable people. Start-up losses are mounting and innovation is slowing, but venture capitalists, entrepreneurs, consultants, university researchers, and business schools are hyping new technologies more than ever before. This hype is facilitated by changes in online media, including the rise of social media. This paper describes how the professional incentives of experts and the changes in online media have increased hype and how this hype makes it harder for policy makers, managers, scientists, engineers, professors, and students to understand new technologies and make good decisions. We need less hype and more level-headed economic analysis and this paper describes how this economic analysis can be done. Irrational Exuberance: A Tech Crash is ComingJeffrey Funk
These slides apply Nobel Laureate Robert Schiller's concept of irrational exuberance (and a book) title to the current speculative bubble of 2019. Over investments in startups and a lack of profitability in them are finally starting to catch up with the venture capital industry and the tech sector that relies on it. Investments by US venture capitalists have risen about six times since 2001 causing the total invested in 2018 to exceed by 40% the peak of 2000, the last big year of the dotcom bubble. But the number of IPOs has never returned to the peak years of 1993 to 2000; only about 250 were carried out between 2015 and 2017 vs. about 1,200 between 1995 and 1997.
The reason is simple: startups are taking longer to go public because they are not profitable. Consider the data. The median time to IPO has risen from 2.8 years in 1998 to 7.7 years in 2016 and the ones going public are less profitable than they were in the past. Although only 22% of startups going public in 1980 were unprofitable, 82% were unprofitable in 2018. The same high percentages of unprofitability have only been achieved twice before, in 1998 and 1999 right before the dotcom bubble burst. Furthermore, startups that have recently done high profile IPOs such as Snap, Dropbox, Blue Apron, Fitbit, Trivago, Box, and Cloudera are still not profitable.

Advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology and related fields have opened up new markets and
new opportunities for progress in critical areas such as health, education, energy, economic inclusion,
social welfare, and the environment. In recent years, machines have surpassed humans in the performance
of certain tasks related to intelligence, such as aspects of image recognition. Experts forecast that rapid
progress in the field of specialized artificial intelligence will continue. Although it is unlikely that
machines will exhibit broadly-applicable intelligence comparable to or exceeding that of humans in the
next 20 years, it is to be expected that machines will continue to reach and exceed human performance on
more and more tasks.
AI-driven automation will continue to create wealth and expand the American economy in the coming
years, but, while many will benefit, that growth will not be costless and will be accompanied by changes
in the skills that workers need to succeed in the economy, and structural changes in the economy.
Aggressive policy action will be needed to help Americans who are disadvantaged by these changes and
to ensure that the enormous benefits of AI and automation are developed by and available to all.
Following up on the Administration’s previous report, Preparing for the Future of Artificial Intelligence,
which was published in October 2016, this report further investigates the effects of AI-driven automation
on the U.S. job market and economy, and outlines recommended policy responses.
This report was produced by a team from the Executive Office of the President including staff from the
Council of Economic Advisers, Domestic Policy Council, National Economic Council, Office of
Management and Budget, and Office of Science and Technology Policy. The analysis and
recommendations included herein draw on insights learned over the course of the Future of AI Initiative,
which was announced in May of 2016, and included Federal Government coordination efforts and crosssector
and public outreach on AI and related policy matters.
Beyond this report, more work remains, to further explore the policy implications of AI. Most notably, AI
creates important opportunities in cyberdefense, and can improve systems to detect fraudulent
transactions and messages.

UDL has gained in popularity over the last decade both in the K-12 and the post-secondary sectors. The usefulness of UDL to create inclusive learning experiences for the full array of diverse learners has been well documented in the literature, and there is now increasing scholarship examining the process of integrating UDL strategically across organisations. One concern, however, remains under-reported and under-researched. Much of the scholarship on UDL ironically remains while and Eurocentric. Even if UDL, as a discourse, considers the decolonization of the curriculum, it is abundantly clear that the research and advocacy related to UDL originates almost exclusively from the Global North and from a Euro-Caucasian authorship. It is argued that it is high time for the way UDL has been monopolized by Global North scholars and practitioners to be challenged. Voices discussing and framing UDL, from the Global South and Indigenous communities, must be amplified and showcased in order to rectify this glaring imbalance and contradiction.
This session represents an opportunity for the author to reflect on a volume he has just finished editing entitled Decolonizing UDL and to highlight and share insights into the key innovations, promising practices, and calls for change, originating from the Global South and Indigenous Communities, that have woven the canvas of this book. The session seeks to create a space for critical dialogue, for the challenging of existing power dynamics within the UDL scholarship, and for the emergence of transformative voices from underrepresented communities. The workshop will use the UDL principles scrupulously to engage participants in diverse ways (challenging single story approaches to the narrative that surrounds UDL implementation) , as well as offer multiple means of action and expression for them to gain ownership over the key themes and concerns of the session (by encouraging a broad range of interventions, contributions, and stances).

The communication industry has always been about telling stories, but how these
stories are being told is changing as time goes on and advances in digital

The political impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) varies across the globe, with some countries
putting it at the forefront of their global image in the fight for power.
With people coming more and more discontent with their elected officials, AI offers a
surprising alternative. Experts believe that the development of AI robots as elected officials
is a fantastic thing as these so-called “AI officials” will be able to offer weighted solutions,
react quickly, maintain 24/7 contact and won’t get old and tired, unlike human political
counterparts (Prakash, 2018).
However, this whole notion of robotic politicians could become a reality sooner than we
think. In the 2018 Russian Presidential Elections, an AI system named “Alice” ran as a
candidate. “Alice” was created by Yandex - or Russia’s equivalent to Google - receiving
25,000 votes.
“Alice” isn’t the only example of AI to run for office, with an AI robot named “Michihito
Matsuda” placing third in a mayoral race in a suburb of Tokyo with 4,000 votes (Prakash,
2018).

The economic impact of Artificial Intelligence also
varies from country to country across the globe, with
some pledging large amounts of money and
resources to the field.
China have positioned themselves a world leader
when it comes to AI, dedicating approximately $2.41
trillion Australian dollars towards AI related
intelligence and industry, with China accounting for
more than half of all global investment in AI over the
past five years.
China expects a huge increase in the size of their AI
industry over the next three years, making it a key part
of their masterplan to re-brand themselves from a
cheap goods manufacturer to world industry leader in
technology by 2030 (Burrows, 2018).

The social impact is all around us in society. Everywhere you turn there is some sort of AI
impacting our lives - whether that be from automated, self driving cars to something as simple as
a virtual assistant such as Google Home or Amazon’s Alexa.
However, one of the more unexpected social impacts of AI lies within the American criminal
justice system.
Not only are advancements in facial recognition rendering fingertips obsolete, but AI is now
being used to automate legal work with some courts already using AI to sentence criminals and
determine their eligibility for parole.
However, many experts argue the criminal justice system is “one area where too much innovation
could be a terrible thing for society and lead us to a dystopian future if we are not
careful” (Degado, 2018).
Experts believe that proper Government regulation of AI within this sector is needed to prevent
“major disruptions to technology”, with one potential solution being to keep the Government
systems open source so that they can be scrutinised for built in biases (Degado, 2018).

The future of AI is promising, but also very worrying
depending on your viewpoint.
Artificial Intelligence is great for society as a whole, but the
machines and technology that is being created and
developed are growing more and more sophisticated,
allowing them to perform complex functions that weren’t
previously thought to be possibility (Ayers, 2016).
However, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing with the benefits
of AI being plentiful and include:
• Automated Transportation
• Taking over dangerous jobs
• Solving climate change
• Robots as friends
• Improved elderly care
