Mark Gschwind, VP of Business Intelligence at DesignMind, gave a presentation on Master Data Services (MDS) in SQL Server 2012. He began with an overview of master data and its importance for central curation, quality management, and ease of access for business users. He then reviewed the key capabilities of MDS, including modeling, validation, stewardship, and integration. Gschwind demonstrated creating an MDS model, using the new Excel interface, business rules, and exposing MDS data to a data warehouse. He concluded with tips for successful MDS implementations such as starting small, engaging business users, and using the development environment.
This session was about Master Data Services and what it also could be used as - the client wanted an application to validate and submit warehouse inventories.

This document provides an overview of Master Data Services 2012. It discusses key concepts such as models, entities, attributes, hierarchies and collections. It also covers loading data into MDS, business rules and validations, and consuming master data. The presentation aims to introduce attendees to MDS and demonstrate how it can be used to consolidate master data from various sources into a central hub to standardize definitions across an enterprise.
Microsoft master data services mds overviewEugene Zozulya
Master data management (MDM) is a technology discipline in which business and IT work together to ensure the uniformity, accuracy, stewardship, semantic consistency and accountability of the enterprise's official shared master data assets.
Master data management tools can be used to support master data management by removing duplicates, standardizing data (mass maintaining), and incorporating rules to eliminate incorrect data from entering the system in order to create an authoritative source of master data.
Microsoft Master Data Services (MDS) is the SQL Server solution for master data management. Master data management (MDM) describes the efforts made by an organization to discover and define non-transactional lists of data, with the goal of compiling maintainable master lists. An MDM project generally includes an evaluation and restructuring of internal business processes along with the implementation of MDM technology. The result of a successful MDM solution is reliable, centralized data that can be analyzed, resulting in better business decisions.
Other Master Data Services features include hierarchies, granular security, transactions, data versioning, and business rules.
Master Data Services includes the following components and tools:
- Master Data Services Configuration Manager, a tool you use to create and configure Master Data Services databases and web applications.
- Master Data Manager, a web application you use to perform administrative tasks (like creating a model or business rule), and that users access to update data.
- MDSModelDeploy.exe, a tool you use to create packages of your model objects and data so you can deploy them to other environments.
- Master Data Services web service, which developers can use to extend or develop custom solutions for Master Data Services.

A recent survey by Information Week found that data quality is the greatest barrier to BI adoption in enterprises. MDS addresses this challenge with modeling, validation, alerting and security capabilities. In this presentation, you will learn how to use MDS to model your data to ensure correctness, update it with changes from your ERP, and create workflows with notifications. Next you will learn the capabilities of DQS and see how it addresses data standardization, completeness and other challenges. You will then see how to use them together to enable Enterprise Information Management. BI professionals will come away with knowledge on how to use tools that address the greatest risk to success for BI projects - data quality

How a Semantic Layer Makes Data Mesh Work at ScaleDATAVERSITY
Data Mesh is a trending approach to building a decentralized data architecture by leveraging a domain-oriented, self-service design. However, the pure definition of Data Mesh lacks a center of excellence or central data team and doesn’t address the need for a common approach for sharing data products across teams. The semantic layer is emerging as a key component to supporting a Hub and Spoke style of organizing data teams by introducing data model sharing, collaboration, and distributed ownership controls.
This session will explain how data teams can define common models and definitions with a semantic layer to decentralize analytics product creation using a Hub and Spoke architecture.
Attend this session to learn about:
- The role of a Data Mesh in the modern cloud architecture.
- How a semantic layer can serve as the binding agent to support decentralization.
- How to drive self service with consistency and control.

Organisations are adopting microservices to keep pace with business innovation; whilst needing to meet the resilience, scalability and security requirements critical for digital solutions. Enterprise relational DBs are often a barrier to this transformation, but they needn’t be.
This presentation delves into the challenges faced by enterprises during digital transformation and modernization initiatives which are often hamstrung by the inherent monolithic nature of enterprise databases.
Many Oracle data-centric applications consist of an intricate web of hundreds of tables, housing hundreds of thousands of lines of PL/SQL code executed within the database via packaged procedures. These relational databases have enabled us to safely and securely manage structured data for several decades, but over time they grow more complex and harder to maintain, slowing down delivery and seriously degrading application performance, business innovation all but grinds to a halt.
Given the impracticality and cost associated with complete rewrites, many organisations are turning to Microservices Architecture, to extract value from existing assets whilst gradually deconstructing the monolithic architecture to facilitate evolutionary changes.
This presentation outlines a systematic and phased approach, based on experience from multiple client initiatives, highlighting the crucial role of this transformation in enabling the creation of APIs that drive new business initiatives. The concept of domain separation, a pivotal element in the migration process, will be introduced, along with options to move certain data retrieval and processing to more appropriate architectures

So You've Lost Quorum: Lessons From Accidental DowntimeScyllaDB
The best thing about databases is that they always work as intended, and never suffer any downtime. You'll never see a system go offline because of a database outage. In this talk, Bo Ingram -- staff engineer at Discord and author of ScyllaDB in Action --- dives into an outage with one of their ScyllaDB clusters, showing how a stressed ScyllaDB cluster looks and behaves during an incident. You'll learn about how to diagnose issues in your clusters, see how external failure modes manifest in ScyllaDB, and how you can avoid making a fault too big to tolerate.
From Natural Language to Structured Solr Queries using LLMsSease
This talk draws on experimentation to enable AI applications with Solr. One important use case is to use AI for better accessibility and discoverability of the data: while User eXperience techniques, lexical search improvements, and data harmonization can take organizations to a good level of accessibility, a structural (or “cognitive” gap) remains between the data user needs and the data producer constraints.
That is where AI – and most importantly, Natural Language Processing and Large Language Model techniques – could make a difference. This natural language, conversational engine could facilitate access and usage of the data leveraging the semantics of any data source.
The objective of the presentation is to propose a technical approach and a way forward to achieve this goal.
The key concept is to enable users to express their search queries in natural language, which the LLM then enriches, interprets, and translates into structured queries based on the Solr index’s metadata.
This approach leverages the LLM’s ability to understand the nuances of natural language and the structure of documents within Apache Solr.
The LLM acts as an intermediary agent, offering a transparent experience to users automatically and potentially uncovering relevant documents that conventional search methods might overlook. The presentation will include the results of this experimental work, lessons learned, best practices, and the scope of future work that should improve the approach and make it production-ready.
