Feng's Classification from 1972 classified computer architectures based on their degree of parallelism. It defined the maximum degree of parallelism P as the maximum number of bits that can be processed within a unit of time. Architectures were classified into four categories based on whether processing occurred at the word and bit level serially or in parallel: word serial/bit serial, word parallel/bit serial, word serial/bit parallel, and word parallel/bit parallel. The degree of parallelism P is calculated as the product of the number of bits in a word and the number of words processed in parallel.
ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) is used to send error and informational messages at the internet layer. ICMPv4 is used with IPv4 and ICMPv6 is used with IPv6. ICMP messages are divided into error messages, which report problems, and informational messages, which are used for testing and diagnostics. Both ICMPv4 and ICMPv6 define message types for common functions like echo requests, redirects, and indicating destination unreachability.
The document discusses different levels of computer memory hierarchy including main memory, cache memory, auxiliary memory, and virtual memory. Main memory uses RAM and ROM chips that are connected to the CPU through address and data buses. The address lines select the specific memory chip and byte location within that chip. Main memory is the highest level of memory that can be accessed directly by the CPU for storage of data and instructions currently in use.
The document discusses memory organization and hierarchy. It describes that memory enables data storage and follows the principle of locality. There are two types of locality - temporal and spatial. The memory hierarchy uses multiple memory levels with increasing access times but also sizes as the levels are further from the CPU. This structure is useful due to the principle of locality. The memory hierarchy consists of CPU registers, cache/SRAM, main memory/DRAM, local disks, and remote storage.
This document discusses parallel language and compiler features. It describes the demanding programming environment for parallel computers compared to sequential ones. The document outlines six categories of parallel language features: optimization, availability, synchronization/communication, control of parallelism, data parallelism, and process management. It also discusses the three phases of compilers for parallel languages: flow analysis, optimization, and code generation. The goal is to automatically generate optimized parallel code from high-level languages to maximize hardware parallelism.
The document discusses principles of universal design and multi-sensory interaction. It covers using multiple senses like sight, sound, and touch to provide richer interaction. Speech and non-speech sounds are explored as input and output methods. Handwriting recognition and gestures are also covered as alternative interaction techniques. The document examines applications and challenges of different technologies for users with varying abilities.

This document discusses various disk scheduling algorithms:
- FCFS handles requests sequentially but suffers from the global zigzag effect.
- SSTF selects the request with the minimum seek time, reducing total head movement but risking starvation.
- SCAN and C-SCAN move the disk arm back and forth, providing more uniform wait times.
- LOOK and C-LOOK only move as far as the last request in each direction before reversing. Circular versions like C-SCAN are more fair but have larger total seek times. The optimal algorithm depends on disk load and request patterns.
Multithreading: Exploiting Thread-Level Parallelism to Improve Uniprocessor ...Ahmed kasim
Multithreading allows multiple threads to share the functional units of a single processor in an overlapping fashion. There are different approaches to multithreading including fine-grained, coarse-grained, and simultaneous multithreading (SMT). The Sun T1 processor implemented fine-grained multithreading across its 8 cores with 4 threads per core, achieving good performance on workloads with high thread-level parallelism. Studies of SMT on Intel Core i7 processors showed modest average speedups of 1.28-1.31X and up to 7% reduction in energy usage.
This document discusses superscalar and super pipeline approaches to improving processor performance. Superscalar processors execute multiple independent instructions in parallel using multiple pipelines. Super pipelines break pipeline stages into smaller stages to reduce clock period and increase instruction throughput. While superscalar utilizes multiple parallel pipelines, super pipelines perform multiple stages per clock cycle in each pipeline. Super pipelines benefit from higher parallelism but also increase potential stalls from dependencies. Both approaches aim to maximize parallel instruction execution but face limitations from true data and other dependencies.
This document discusses various attributes that influence computer system performance. It covers topics like instruction count, cycles per instruction, processor cycle time, memory access latency, and how factors like instruction set architecture, compiler technology, processor implementation, and memory hierarchy can affect these performance attributes and metrics like instructions per second. It also summarizes different types of parallel computer architectures like shared-memory multiprocessors, distributed-memory multicomputers, vector supercomputers and SIMD machines.
Satellite communications uses satellites as relay stations to transmit signals between Earth stations that are too far for direct transmission. Signals are sent to the satellite (uplink) and retransmitted to another station (downlink). Satellites provide wide coverage and transmission costs are independent of distance. Orbits include GEO, LEO, MEO and HAPs. Capacity is allocated using FDMA or TDMA, dividing available frequencies or time slots between users.

The document summarizes key concepts about virtual memory from the 10th edition of the textbook "Operating System Concepts". It discusses how virtual memory allows processes to have a logical address space larger than physical memory by swapping pages between main memory and secondary storage as needed. When a process attempts to access a memory page not currently in RAM, a page fault occurs which is handled by the operating system by finding a free frame, loading the requested page, and resuming execution. Page replacement algorithms like FIFO are used when free frames are unavailable. Demand paging loads pages lazily on first access rather than up front.
An operating system manages a computer's hardware resources and provides services for application software. It is found on devices like computers, game consoles, mobile phones, and cars. The main functions of an operating system include managing the processor, memory, storage, devices, and providing a user interface. It ensures each process receives processor time and uses processor cycles efficiently. Memory management involves allocating memory portions to programs and freeing it when unused. Device drivers act as translators between hardware and software. Storage is managed by allocating memory space to processes without overlap and using different memory types effectively.
This document provides information about systems programming and assembly language concepts. It contains definitions of systems software and application programs. It also describes the basic components of a computer including the microprocessor, memory, I/O devices, and system bus. Finally, it explains concepts related to assembly language programming such as addressing modes, directives, and the control unit of the CPU.

It provides examples of how much time is spent loading different parts of top websites, both with empty caches and full caches. The "performance golden rule" is that 80-90% of end-user response time is spent on the front-end. The document also outlines Yahoo's 14 rules for performance optimization, which include making fewer HTTP requests, using content delivery networks, adding Expires headers, gzipping components, script and CSS placement, and more.
The document provides tips for setting up and running a WordPress site. It recommends starting with a host that offers a dedicated IP address to avoid downtime caused by other sites. Key plugins are discussed like Akismet for spam protection and All in One SEO. Backups should be handled through the hosting company's tools. The document also provides tips for testing themes and plugins, securing WordPress, and making posting and content management easy.

Keep in mind:
- The 8+8+8 rule offers a general guideline. You may need to adjust the schedule depending on your individual needs and commitments.
- Some days may require more work or less sleep, demanding flexibility in your approach.
- The key is to be mindful of your time allocation and strive for a healthy balance across the three categories.
Creativity for Innovation and SpeechmakingMattVassar1
Tapping into the creative side of your brain to come up with truly innovative approaches. These strategies are based on original research from Stanford University lecturer Matt Vassar, where he discusses how you can use them to come up with truly innovative solutions, regardless of whether you're using to come up with a creative and memorable angle for a business pitch--or if you're coming up with business or technical innovations.
Cross-Cultural Leadership and CommunicationMattVassar1
Business is done in many different ways across the world. How you connect with colleagues and communicate feedback constructively differs tremendously depending on where a person comes from. Drawing on the culture map from the cultural anthropologist, Erin Meyer, this class discusses how best to manage effectively across the invisible lines of culture.
Decolonizing Universal Design for LearningFrederic Fovet
UDL has gained in popularity over the last decade both in the K-12 and the post-secondary sectors. The usefulness of UDL to create inclusive learning experiences for the full array of diverse learners has been well documented in the literature, and there is now increasing scholarship examining the process of integrating UDL strategically across organisations. One concern, however, remains under-reported and under-researched. Much of the scholarship on UDL ironically remains while and Eurocentric. Even if UDL, as a discourse, considers the decolonization of the curriculum, it is abundantly clear that the research and advocacy related to UDL originates almost exclusively from the Global North and from a Euro-Caucasian authorship. It is argued that it is high time for the way UDL has been monopolized by Global North scholars and practitioners to be challenged. Voices discussing and framing UDL, from the Global South and Indigenous communities, must be amplified and showcased in order to rectify this glaring imbalance and contradiction.
This session represents an opportunity for the author to reflect on a volume he has just finished editing entitled Decolonizing UDL and to highlight and share insights into the key innovations, promising practices, and calls for change, originating from the Global South and Indigenous Communities, that have woven the canvas of this book. The session seeks to create a space for critical dialogue, for the challenging of existing power dynamics within the UDL scholarship, and for the emergence of transformative voices from underrepresented communities. The workshop will use the UDL principles scrupulously to engage participants in diverse ways (challenging single story approaches to the narrative that surrounds UDL implementation) , as well as offer multiple means of action and expression for them to gain ownership over the key themes and concerns of the session (by encouraging a broad range of interventions, contributions, and stances).
