Traffic light control design approaches: a systematic literature review

To assess different approaches to traffic light control design, a systematic literature review was conducted, covering publications from 2006 to 2020. The review’s aim was to gather and examine all studies that looked at road traffic and congestion issues. As well, it aims to extract and analyze protruding techniques from selected research articles in order to provide researchers and practitioners with recommendations and solutions. The research approach has placed a strong emphasis on planning, performing the analysis, and reporting the results. According to the results of the study, there has yet to be developed a specific design that senses road traffic and provides intelligent solutions. Dynamic time intervals, learning capability, emergency priority management, and intelligent functionality are all missing from the conventional design approach. While learning skills in the adaptive self-organization strategy were missed. Nonetheless, the vast majority of intelligent design approach papers lacked intelligent fear tires and learning abilities.

The present research focuses on developing an intelligent traffic management solution for tracking the vehicles on roads. Our proposed work focuses on a much better you only look once (YOLOv4) traffic monitoring system that uses the CSPDarknet53 architecture as its foundation. Deep-sort learning methodology for vehicle multi-target detection from traffic video is also part of our research study. We have included features like the Kalman filter, which estimates unknown objects and can track moving targets. Hungarian techniques identify the correct frame for the object. We are using enhanced object detection network design and new data augmentation techniques with YOLOv4, which ultimately aids in traffic monitoring. Until recently, object identification models could either perform quickly or draw conclusions quickly. This was a big improvement, as YOLOv4 has an astoundingly good performance for a very high frames per second (FPS). The current study is focused on developing an intelligent video surveillance-based vehicle tracking system that tracks the vehicles using a neural network, image-based tracking, and YOLOv4. Real video sequences of road traffic are used to test the effectiveness of the method that has been suggested in the research. Through simulations, it is demonstrated that the suggested technique significantly increases graphics processing unit (GPU) speed and FSP as compared to baseline algorithms.

As we seen everyday vehicle traffic increases day by day on road is causing many issues. We face many traffic jams due to the inefficient traffic controlling system which is unable to cope up with the current scenario of traffic in our country. To overcome such drastic scenario and looking at current traffic volume we need to develop a system which works on real time processing and works after determining the traffic density and then calculating the best possibility in which the traffic on particular cross road is dissolved. Also, it helps in saving time as on traffic roads. In present traffic control system when there is no traffic on road but the static signal not allow traffic to move to cross and it changes after at fixed interval so at every cycle this amount of time is wasted for unused traffic density road and if one road is at high traffic it continuously grows till human intervention. The basic theme is to control the traffic using static cameras fixed on right side of the road along top of the traffic pole to check the complete traffic density on other side of the road. This system will calculate number of vehicles on the road by moving detection and tracking system developed based on optical flow estimation and green light counter will be based on the calculated number of vehicles on the road.

Therefore, in this research using location awareness applications installed in mobile devices, data related to user mobility were collected by using crowdsourcing techniques and studied. Based on these observations an algorithm has been developed to overcome the problem. By using this, the best transportation method can be predicted as the results of the research. Therefore, people can choose what will be the best time slots & transportation methods when planning journeys. Throughout this research it has been proven that for the Sri Lankan context, the data mining concepts together with crowdsourcing can be applied to determine the best transportation method.

With the fast development of artificial intelligence, robotics, and embedded system along with sensor technologies, the speed control mechanism is required in various other applications such as automatic or self-piloting aircraft, auto-driven vehicles, auto driven lifts and much other robotics based automation plants, etc. For each unpredictable and progressed vehicular framework accompanies a better route that is fit for utilizing the two GPS and INS related sign. There have been a noteworthy number of research works being completed towards creating sliding mode control framework. In case of inaccurate navigational data or no availability of navigational service, the cruise control could also stop working. Hence, there is a need to evolve up with a novel system offering reliable and fault tolerant navigation system in order to minimize the dependencies on GPS-based information and maximize the utilization of INS based information. This manuscript presents a dynamic cruise control system to achieve better navigation under uncertainties. The performance of the system is analyzed by incorporating sliding mode and fuzzy logic and achieves better accuracy in tracking error, computational complexity (28 sec of simulation time) under chattering and switching action operation.

Traffic signals play an important role in controlling and coordinating the traffic movement in cities especially in urban areas. As the traffic is exponentially increasing in cities and the pre-timed traffic light control is insufficient in effective timing of the traffic lights, it leads to poor traffic clearance and ultimately to heavy traffic congestion at intersections. Even the Emergency vehicles like Ambulance and Fire brigade are struck at such intersections and experience a prolonged waiting time. An adaptive and intelligent approach in design of traffic light signals is desirable and this paper contributes in applying fuzzy logic to control traffic signal of single four-way intersection giving priority to the Emergency vehicle clearance. The proposed control system is composed of two parallel controllers to select the appropriate lane for green signal and also to decide the appropriate green light time as per the real time traffic condition. Performance of the proposed system is evaluated by using simulations and comparing with pre-timed control system in changing traffic flow condition. Simulation results show significant improvement over the pre-timed control in terms of traffic clearance and lowering of Emergency vehicle wait time at the intersection especially when traffic intensity is high.

After reviewing the existing system, a significant trade-off is explored between the existing navigational system and present state of controller design on various case studies and applications. The existing design of controller system for navigation using error-prone GPS/INS data doesn’t emphasize on sliding mode controller. Although, there has been good number of studies in sliding mode controller, it is less attempted to optimize the navigational performance of a vehicle. Therefore, this paper presents a novel optimized design of a sliding mode controller that can be effectively deployed on advanced navigational system. The study outcome was found to offer higher speed, optimal control signal, and lower error occurances to prove that proposed system offers reliable and optimized navigational services in contrast to existing system.

Abstract: An automatic vehicle classification (AVC) station is typically composed of three sensors per lane. Instances of data missing from the traffic datasets collected at such stations can occur as a result of issues such as one of the sensors malfunctioning. Although various data imputation methods, such as autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA), exponential smoothing, and interpolation, have been proposed to deal with this problem, they are either too complicated or have significant errors. This paper proposes a model, called the “cumulative axle model,” that minimizes such errors in traffic volume data resulting from a malfunctioning sensor at AVC stations. Evaluations conducted in which missing traffic volume data imputation was simulated using the proposed cumulative axle model indicate that our method has a mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 2.92%. This is significantly more accurate than that of conventional imputation methods, which achieve a MAPE of only 10% on average.

The aim of this research study was to develop a theoretical traffic detection system and capable of estimating the travel time associated with each street segment based on the traffic data updated every 20 seconds, which successively finds the path with the shortest travel time in the network by using a dynamic programming technique. Furthermore, in this study we model the travel time associated with each street segment based on the historical and real time data considering that the traffic speed on each road segment is piecewise constant.
