Father's Day is a day dedicated to honouring and appreciating the paternal figures in our lives. It is celebrated with enthusiasm across the globe. This year, Father's Day falls on Sunday, June 16. It's a time for children, young and old, to express their love, gratitude, and respect for their fathers and father figures, acknowledging the vital role they play in shaping families and society.

A brief history of Father’s Day

The origins of Father's Day can be traced back to the early 20th century. The idea of celebrating fathers came about in response to the already established Mother's Day. The first known Father’s Day celebration was held on June 19, 1910, in Spokane, Washington.

It was organised by Sonora Smart Dodd, who was inspired to honour her father, William Jackson Smart, a Civil War veteran and a single parent who raised six children.

Dodd’s campaign for Father’s Day gained momentum, and in 1924, President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national day to honour fathers. However, it wasn’t until 1966 that President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day.

Finally, in 1972, President Richard Nixon signed it into law, making Father’s Day a permanent national holiday in the United States.

Significance of Father’s Day

Father’s Day holds profound significance as it serves as a reminder of the indispensable role fathers play in the lives of their children and families. It’s a day to celebrate not just biological fathers but also stepfathers, grandfathers, uncles, and other male figures who provide guidance, support, and love.

The celebration of Father’s Day goes beyond mere gifting; it’s about spending quality time, creating memories, and expressing heartfelt gratitude. It underscores the values of fatherhood and the positive impact fathers have on their children’s emotional and psychological well-being. This day also encourages a broader societal appreciation for the hard work and dedication of fathers in various cultures around the world.

Global celebrations

While the date of Father’s Day varies globally, the essence remains universal. In many countries, including the US, the UK, and Canada, it is celebrated on the third Sunday in June. However, other countries observe it on different dates. For instance, Australia and New Zealand celebrate it on the first Sunday in September, while in Thailand, it coincides with the birthday of the King, December 5th.

Each culture has its unique way of celebrating Father’s Day, reflecting their traditions and values. Common practices include family gatherings, special meals, and giving personalized gifts that symbolize appreciation and love. Schools often organize activities where children create handmade cards and crafts to present to their fathers.
