Porcelain Stone®
Bluestone
Distinctly American. Uniquely Crossville.
Bluestone Porcelain Stone®
tile takes its inspiration from natural
stone. With deep earthen hues, dynamic texture and fossil-like
surface impressions, the beauty and power of nature shine
through. But unlike real stone, Bluestone has unmatched stain
and scratch resistance and contains a minimum of 20 percent
recycled content.
What’s more, it’s available in a variety of sizes, including popular
plank shapes via Crossville’s “Get Planked” program. So for the
rich luster and timeless beauty of stone, Bluestone Porcelain
Stone®
is the perfect alternative.

W
hile we were putting this issue together, I
was invited to speak to interior design and
architecture students at San Francisco’s
Academy of Art University. Joining me were
designers Barbara Scavullo, Jiun Ho and Laura Lienhard. The hundred
or so students in the room were itching to get advice on how to break
into, and succeed, in the design business. Here’s what we told them:
Above all else, be passionate. And exacting. Focus on the details. Do
more than you’re asked. Stay hungry. Be fearless. Have a distinctive
point of view. Remain curious. Travel often. Confidence, polish and
professionalism will take you far. Exceed expectations. Do what hasn’t
been done before. See the potential for beauty where none exists.
And, enjoy the ride. Sage advice for fresh new talent…and us all.

Often with the start of a new year, we reflect on and are inspired by the accomplishments
we’ve enjoyed during the past 12 months. My experience has been that highlights are often
realized through the benefit of great partnerships, and this has certainly been true of
Luxe Interiors + Design Houston over the past eight years.
Luxe concluded 2012 with great success, as we launched our LuxeBox program and
celebrated another year in this extraordinary city. Thank you to our inaugural LuxeBox
designers, who participated in a peer panel discussion during The Houston Design Center’s
Fall Market for an informative conversation on the design industry.
This year brings us a remarkable show home, the Villa de Luxe Designer Showhouse. Luxe—along
with Preservation Houston and Martha Turner Properties—is proud to be sponsoring this event,
a modern-day reinterpretation of a stunning 1926 Shadyside estate orchestrated by talented
members of our local design community. Please take time to tour this grand home February
2-17. Proceeds benefit Preservation Houston; for more information, visit preservationhouston.org.
Wishing you a rewarding 2013!

Austin-based architect Ryan Street’s
innovative aesthetic for the featured
Spanish Moorish abode borrows from
the design traditions of celebrated icons
like Wallace Neff and George Washington
Smith. “I chose to introduce an open
plan, with generous outdoor spaces
that communicate with the interior,”
Street says. Inspired by the hill town
architectural elements of southern Spain,
the structure peaks at a third-floor tower
room, which commands captivating
vistas of Lake Austin. rsassoc.com

This season, architect Robert A.M. Stern
unveils the New York Home collection, a
nine-piece assemblage of elegantly scaled
furnishings that embody his seamless approach
to design. “For 30 years, we’ve augmented
the interiors of our buildings with custom-made
pieces,” says Alexander Lamis, a partner at
Robert A.M. Stern Architects. “Now, we’re
making our products available to a more
general public.” Featured here, Tête-à-Tête

When Arthur Andersson begins work on
a project, the Austin architect embraces
several cardinal tenets. “It’s imperative to
think about the property’s climate,” Andersson
notes. “I always orient the home so that it is
protected from the sun and takes advantage of
prevailing breezes.” Upon envisioning the
featured Lake Travis residence, Andersson
enlisted a tri-level plan complete with a third-
floor terrace that overlooks the water. “My
intention was to create a space where the
splendor of the lake could be enjoyed while
still making a connection to the physical
place.” anderssonwise.com

According to San Antonio-based architect
Jim Poteet, “renovating a historic building
should be about revealing its inner beauty.”
Situated in the city’s Lavaca neighborhood,
this loft-style home was conjured from a
1860s house, which Poteet infused with
a modern inclination. “As the frame was
originally constructed using German stone
laying techniques,” he says, “I endeavored
to add materials that did not contradict
with its existing components.” By virtue of
reclaimed pine flooring, rich walnut walls
and atypical finishes, Poteet certainly
evoked the structure’s innate charm.

Manhattan architect and chairman of
the Institute of Classical Architecture
& Art, Peter Pennoyer discusses the
merits of classicism.
What is classical architecture?
Classical architecture is based on a set of guidelines, rules and proportions—most
clearly articulated in the Renaissance—that addresses the composition of a building.
It’s an incredibly rich tradition that allows for great imagination, variation and invention.
Can you live a modern life in a classical house?
A modern plan and classical architecture are not incompatible. My wife and I are building a
house, and our dining and living rooms and kitchen are completely open to each other. This
would not have gone over well 50 years ago, and yet, it’s still fundamentally Greek Revival.
Do people have misconceptions about this style?
Some people are scared of it because they think it’ll dictate a way of living. I don’t
think people realize how exciting it can be until they go into one of these houses.
What is a good example of classical architecture in America?
Monticello. One of the interesting things about classicism, which Thomas Jefferson
demonstrated, is that you don’t have to have studied architecture to appreciate it. Monticello
is a wonderful classical house, but Jefferson really made it his own. It’s quite quirky.
Q+A
For the design of the featured Hill Country
abode, Austin architect James LaRue followed
a site-driven approach, where his primary
consideration was marrying the building to its
location. Orchestrating an open floor plan along
the property’s sloping terrain, LaRue implemented
a rich palette of limestone, aluminum and steel
to create a truly captivating façade. “From the
street, only the roof is visible,” says LaRue.
“As you advance towards the home, an alluring
exterior materializes.” larue-architects.com

Set on an open expanse of terrain in central Texas,
this contemporary take on a barn-style structure is
equipped with a two-story apartment and a fully
functioning workshop. Orienting the ipe wood exterior
to create a rain screen, Houston-based architect
Jason Logan was able to increase the flow of air to the
structure and improve insulation. “When you’re faced
with a humid climate, it’s imperative to consider the
specific atmosphere,” Logan explains. “Here, we honed
in on the building’s boundaries in order to guarantee a
comfortable interior.” loganandjohnson.com

Seasoned in a plethora of European architectural
modes, Dallas architect Robbie Fusch’s design
of an English Tudor-style residence came not as a
challenge, but as an opportunity to create something
unique. “I revel in studying different historical periods,”
says Fusch, who investigates the local vernacular
of a period before staging a plan. Steeped in the
traditional, Fusch’s featured home presents carved
limestone on the exterior and oak flooring for the
interior. “The mix of materials harkens back to the
Elizabethan era,” he says, “right down to the English
terra-cotta roof.” fuscharchitects.com

Imagination can often be more powerful than mere knowledge. For the dynamic creatives
behind the handmade textile and interior house Fromental, creative thinking is an
intrinsic part of their design approach. Fromental founders Tim Butcher and Lizzie
Deshayes dreamed of one day fabricating a collection that would bring bespoke
wallcoverings and fabrics to life. Now just seven years later, this London-based
husband-and-wife duo has kept the design industry spellbound one exquisite creation
after another. “As a designer, your antennae are always sensitive to styles and details and
the way in which you respond to them,” says Butcher. “Most recently, we’ve been influenced
by the stark architectural style of urban brutalism and post-war period art.” Ranging from
modern graphic prints in sophisticated colorways to ethereal florals conveyed through
striking embroideries, each work of art simply transforms
an interior canvas with a painterly hand, providing certain
tactile envy to any space. Master craftsmanship, innovative
techniques and a passion for pure beauty fuel Fromental’s
artistic journey permitting Butcher and Deshayes to continue
inspiring the design world. fromental.co.uk

Palecek on Marks
Jeffrey was a good fit for
Palecek because his designs are
sophisticated but still casual.
we wanted these two
collections to each have a
different perspective on what
we’ve been doing for years.
Jeffrey took materials that
we’re famous for and gave us
an outside approach.
he energized the brand by
always challenging us to do more
intricate things and to focus
more on smaller details.
we’re excited that the Palo

urban environments. It has
slightly more wood and slightly
less rattan.
there was one Piece that

coming out in round two.
Marks on Palecek
i grew uP with Palecek. Its
traditional wicker was in my
parents’ beach house in La Jolla.
what i like about Palecek
is that they’re not just about
wicker anymore. I wanted to be
a little more inventive and put a
new spin on the brand.
i ended uP doing two
collections. Palo Alto is
urban and streamlined, and then
La Jolla is more of a beach look.
i wanted to keeP the feel-
ing of Palecek’s natural
Materials so I came up with
four new finishes that are all
meant to mix in one room
together. I don’t want anything
too matchy-matchy.
PeoPle want that
california look whether
they’re in London or Minnesota.
Yet, the pieces work anywhere
by changing the finish. If you
put the Spindrift sofa in a darker
finish with a beautiful leather, it
would fit in a house in Aspen.

should be the guest of honor at any gathering. In
this Chicago dining room, Nate Berkus Associates
created a timeless and inviting milieu that is ready

details like old pottery, distressed chairs, a mahogany table and a rich
velvety brown color for the walls, the mood is instantly set. “Always
have fresh flowers, a fun seating arrangement, tried-and-true recipes, an
extra-long playlist of great music and a clever takeaway to keep your guests
talking,” suggests Lauren Buxbaum, design director along with Sasha Adler

out my crystal, preferably something from William Yeoward.
And guests should prepare for tequila served in some form at
my parties—Don Julio Añejo always makes an appearance.
Small Soiree: I don’t place much weight on sending guests
home with something tangible but rather supplying them with
great memories! Big Bash: For a fancier affair, it’s nice to
have a little something, whether it’s a small treat in pretty
packaging or sweet-smelling soaps or bath salts. And of
course anything that continues the theme of the event.
Small Soiree: B Designs Letterpress is a must for those
get-togethers that you want to feel really special. I prefer
using a flat card with Garamond typeface. Big Bash: I turn to
Crane & Co.’s ecruwhite, 100-percent cotton, Embassy-size
fold with a London script font. Guests know they’re in for a
splendid evening when they receive this invite.
Small Soiree: We recently discovered the art of homemade
preserves and have had so much fun with different flavors.
They’re a great treat to share with guests. Big Bash: Setting
the mood with candlelight is a must. I couple tapers with
ample votives that I place in unexpected holders; like antique
cut-crystal sugar dishes that are the perfect size for a votive.
Small Soiree: I love Tocca’s small votives. Their light
and delicate fragrance can work well in any home, as
they don’t overpower a room with their scent. Big Bash:
I always send friends away with a small assorted box of
Leonidas Belgian chocolates. The packaging is a perfect
parting gift to an elegant evening.
Small Soiree: I am a bit of a Paper Source junkie when
it comes to letterpress—I can always count on them for
fashionable color options for all my party accessories.
Big Bash: The designer patterns that Kate Spade offers are
to die for, and then it’s about the typography. I usually fall
back on a classic easy-to-read but always-elegant Bodoni.
Small Soiree: There’s nothing like beautiful pillar candles
mixed with an array of votives to create ambience on a
table. It’s so simple yet so memorable. Big Bash: Niermann
Weeks has beautiful chandeliers that instantly add glamour
to a space, which is exactly what I aspire to when planning
an elegant affair. Everyone will take notice.
Small Soiree: There’s always the go-to set of candles,
but I like to rely on good times and laughs to leave that
lasting impression. Big Bash: Cleverly wrapped boxes
of chocolates and mini wine journals are my proven
party favor hits. They’re easy to find and guests are
sure to enjoy them.

visual studies
thomas pheasant reveals the creative process behind
his inspired furniture collection for baker.
T
homas Pheasant carries his camera
and sketchbook everywhere. “That’s
how my process starts,” says the
Washington, D.C. interior designer.
And, as is evident in the furnishings of his 75-piece
collection for Baker, the process ends with the
designer translating those visual experiences into
his own sophisticated language. Sometimes the
connection is immediate and sometimes it has
to emerge: The idea for his Column dining table
instantly struck as he looked up at Paris’ Saint-
Sulpice church, whereas the line’s palette developed
as he kept recalling the silvery buildings seen in
Venice. A floral pattern he photographed on a
Paris apartment resurfaced on the St. Honoré
chest and again on the Petal drum table. “That
table is really inspired by a Valentino dress Halle
Berry wore,” explains Pheasant. “I had the detail
in the collection, saw the dress and sketched
it out. That’s how inspiration works for me.”
1. inspire
“Architecture is a leading force of inspiration
for me,” says Pheasant, who photographed the
Saint-Sulpice church in Paris to reference for
his Column dining table.
2. sketch
Pheasant sketched the Athens lounge chair,
his take on the classic klismos form, while
on an airplane. “It started the ball rolling for
the collection,” he says.
3. create
His furniture designs, as with his interiors
work, balance historic roots with modern
silhouettes. “I wanted to study the past, but
strip it down to the essentials,” says Pheasant.

forever changed the perspective
on designer furnishings: What was
once designed for mere function
is now a creative outlet, defining personal style.
With the launch of a luxury outdoor collection
and a new London showroom, the brand contin-
ues to keep patrons guessing as to what’s next
while never straying from its foundation. Since
its inception, the famed furniture maker is still
operating from a quaint factory in northern
England where each piece is handmade by a team
of artisans using natural, raw materials. “There
is a timelessness and sophistication that allows
our pieces to work in a myriad of diverse interior
schemes,” explains Patricia Spado, director of U.S.
operations and sales. And the distinguished brand
has infiltrated some of the world’s most presti-
gious homes and hotels, a muse for countless
architects and designers. “The structural design
of our furniture,” says Spado, “is the blank canvas
on which designers produce their masterpieces.”
“It is the integrity in both design and craftsmanship that allows
George Smith furniture to transcend simple classification.”
-PATRICIA SPADO, GEORGE SMITH

The Conversation piece is keeping an open dialogue

S
ometimes books are more than just good reads. When artfully arranged and
ornamented, they tell a visual story as compelling as the words written inside.
Carefully curated, thoughtfully placed, and paired with eye-catching bookends and
dazzling décor accessories, books—whether paperbacks or hardbacks—always add
soul and introduce character to the surfaces (and rooms) they grace. Here, three dashing
designers with a literary passion explore some of the possibilities.

Seemingly fragile and perhaps unsteady, the Rendez-Vouz desk from the

times. Though sporting bamboo-like supports bound together simply by
rope, the structural foundation is cast of sturdy bronze and topped with
strong walnut to ensure a secure and dependable escritoire. This inven-

I became Interested In art…
At a young age. My maternal grandmother
was a sculptor and watercolorist, my
mother an interior designer, and my father
a collector.
What do you collect?
Everything from the old masters to
contemporary artists: Renoir, Leonor Fini,
Luis Royo, Lélia Pissarro and America Martin.
Work approach:
I’m focused, driven and inspired on a daily
basis by each and every artist I encounter,
whether represented by me or not.
Greatest fInd:
Charles Umlauf. I was introduced to one
of his sons, Louis, five years ago, and since
then we’ve had the honor of representing the
family in three shows. If you’ve ever been to
the Umlauf Sculpture Garden & Museum,
you’ll understand the importance of this
Texas treasure.

“For every new artist I work with, I ask myself, ‘Could their art hang
next to a Picasso?’ That answer must always be yes,” says Lisa Russell,
owner of the Russell Collection Fine Art Gallery in Austin’s West End.
Whether highlighting emerging artists like Chuck Voelter, Olga Porter and
Rimi Yang, to name just a few, or exhibiting masterworks from Picasso,
Chagall, Rembrandt and Matisse, it’s the collective balance of periods,
knowledge—Russell and her staff thoroughly research everything they
showcase—and curating that resonates most with her mission. “What
displays on the walls here has a deeper meaning once you get to know the
artist,” she explains. “I feel a great sense of accomplishment putting these
collections together.” Russell, who also hosts lectures, visiting artists and
themed international exhibits, says she’s most gratified by the impact
she has on her clients’ lives. “The smile on someone’s face after making a
connection with a piece of art is truly amazing.” russell-collection.com

STYLE MAKERS fine art
l u x e i n t e r i o r s + d e s i g n 129
The magnetism of power lines has long been artist, textile and rug designer
Randy Twaddle’s muse, proving that even the most utilitarian of objects are
exquisite in the right context. Enthralled by the electric energy provider’s
stark, industrial nature, the linear silhouettes run rampant throughout
Twaddle’s work, from charcoal and coffee-and-ink drawings to hand-knotted
Persian rugs. “I’m interested in things that are overlooked, and in finding the
beauty that exists within,” says the Houston-based artist. “In that sense I
consider myself more of an editor than a creator.” Twaddle’s inability to find
carpeting for his own home led to a serendipitous commission from local
dealer Carol Piper Rugs, which helped bring into fruition full-fledged textile
and rug collections. Combining both the fluidity of fine art with the calculated
precision of geometry, Twaddle’s Transformer images bring a fresh perspective
to an often unnoticed entity. “I am amazed at how unintentionally lyrical and
exquisite linear configurations can be,” says Twaddle. “I find those things
and reframe them in a way that gets people to pay attention.” randytwaddle.com

Like many Texas natives, hunting has always been in Leslie Pritchard’s
blood. And when she sets her sights on a big game prize—like an antique
camelback sofa, Regency étagère, brass-and-burl end table or Lucite
lamp—rarely does the owner of Dallas vintage shop Again & Again miss.
“I don’t want what someone else has chosen for me,” declares Pritchard. “I
want to find something and put a personal spin on it, whether it’s my own
or someone else’s.” That quest has evolved into a successful business, as
Pritchard’s delightfully exuberant and original approach to period pieces
has developed a loyal following. “We look for things that will stand the
test of time, design-wise,” she says, but nothing is off-limits when it comes
to reinventing a piece, from covering it with zebra pony hair (the shop’s
signature print) to cutting off its arms or lacquering it in an unexpected
hue. “I consider myself a furniture artist more than anything,” says
Pritchard. “I see the beauty in everything.” againandagain.com

eauty and function (and a dash of serendipity) are
often the quintessential benchmarks behind a truly
successful space. The journey to achieve such an
interior is one that many designers find themselves
in time and again. For this kitchen, it was San Francisco-based
Kendall Wilkinson who had to strike the right balance between the
distinct qualities. “Once I found the floral fabric seen on the backs
of the dining chairs,
everything came together
in a creative kismet of
sorts,” she says. Using
stainless-steel appliances
and white subway tiles
as her base, Wilkinson
peppered color and
injected warmth into the
space’s canvas, beginning
with honed ruivina marble slabs. The emerald-hued stone (a
color plucked from the sprightly textile) added contrast to the
all-white cabinetry and steel, but Wilkinson went a step further
and introduced more textures with a seamless wood flank that
flows straight off the marble, resulting in a bar-height table. “I
wanted all the neighboring rooms to feel balanced and evoke a
strong sense of flow from one living area to another.”

With deep earthen hues, dynamic texture and fossil-like surface impressions, the beauty and power of nature shine through. But unlike real stone, Bluestone has unmatched stain and scratch resistance and contains a minimum of 20 percent recycled content. What’s more, it’s available in a variety of sizes, including popular plank shapes via Crossville’s “Get Planked” program. So for the rich luster and timeless beauty of stone, Bluestone Porcelain Stone® is the perfect alternative.

  • 54. Editor’s LEttEr W hile we were putting this issue together, I was invited to speak to interior design and architecture students at San Francisco’s Academy of Art University. Joining me were designers Barbara Scavullo, Jiun Ho and Laura Lienhard. The hundred or so students in the room were itching to get advice on how to break into, and succeed, in the design business. Here’s what we told them: Above all else, be passionate. And exacting. Focus on the details. Do more than you’re asked. Stay hungry. Be fearless. Have a distinctive point of view. Remain curious. Travel often. Confidence, polish and professionalism will take you far. Exceed expectations. Do what hasn’t been done before. See the potential for beauty where none exists. And, enjoy the ride. Sage advice for fresh new talent…and us all. Pamela Jaccarino, Editor in Chief pam@sandowmedia.com follow me on twitter: @pamelajaccarino the business of design

According to San Antonio-based architect Jim Poteet, “renovating a historic building should be about revealing its inner beauty.” Situated in the city’s Lavaca neighborhood, this loft-style home was conjured from a 1860s house, which Poteet infused with a modern inclination. “As the frame was originally constructed using German stone laying techniques,” he says, “I endeavored to add materials that did not contradict with its existing components.” By virtue of reclaimed pine flooring, rich walnut walls and atypical finishes, Poteet certainly evoked the structure’s innate charm. poteetarchitects.com modern existence ^ Manhattan architect and chairman of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art, Peter Pennoyer discusses the merits of classicism. What is classical architecture? Classical architecture is based on a set of guidelines, rules and proportions—most clearly articulated in the Renaissance—that addresses the composition of a building. It’s an incredibly rich tradition that allows for great imagination, variation and invention. Can you live a modern life in a classical house? A modern plan and classical architecture are not incompatible. My wife and I are building a house, and our dining and living rooms and kitchen are completely open to each other. This would not have gone over well 50 years ago, and yet, it’s still fundamentally Greek Revival. Do people have misconceptions about this style? Some people are scared of it because they think it’ll dictate a way of living. I don’t think people realize how exciting it can be until they go into one of these houses. What is a good example of classical architecture in America? Monticello. One of the interesting things about classicism, which Thomas Jefferson demonstrated, is that you don’t have to have studied architecture to appreciate it. Monticello is a wonderful classical house, but Jefferson really made it his own. It’s quite quirky. Q+A For the design of the featured Hill Country abode, Austin architect James LaRue followed a site-driven approach, where his primary consideration was marrying the building to its location. Orchestrating an open floor plan along the property’s sloping terrain, LaRue implemented a rich palette of limestone, aluminum and steel to create a truly captivating façade. “From the street, only the roof is visible,” says LaRue. “As you advance towards the home, an alluring exterior materializes.” larue-architects.com ^ MIxed MAterIAls 068 l u x e i n t e r i o r s + d e s i g n Internationally acclaimed architect David Adjaye is also the visionary behind the Star collection, shown, a limited edition trio of vessels that exercise the geometry of paired triangles. For the dynamic creatives behind the handmade textile and interior house Fromental, creative thinking is an intrinsic part of their design approach. Fromental founders Tim Butcher and Lizzie Deshayes dreamed of one day fabricating a collection that would bring bespoke wallcoverings and fabrics to life. Now just seven years later, this London-based husband-and-wife duo has kept the design industry spellbound one exquisite creation after another. “As a designer, your antennae are always sensitive to styles and details and the way in which you respond to them,” says Butcher. “Most recently, we’ve been influenced by the stark architectural style of urban brutalism and post-war period art.” Ranging from modern graphic prints in sophisticated colorways to ethereal florals conveyed through striking embroideries, each work of art simply transforms an interior canvas with a painterly hand, providing certain tactile envy to any space. Jeffrey took materials that we’re famous for and gave us an outside approach. he energized the brand by always challenging us to do more intricate things and to focus more on smaller details. we’re excited that the Palo Alto line will fit really well into urban environments. It has slightly more wood and slightly less rattan. there was one Piece that he had to convince me of. It’s coming out in round two. Marks on Palecek i grew uP with Palecek. Its traditional wicker was in my parents’ beach house in La Jolla. what i like about Palecek is that they’re not just about wicker anymore. I wanted to be a little more inventive and put a new spin on the brand. i ended uP doing two collections. Palo Alto is urban and streamlined, and then La Jolla is more of a beach look. i wanted to keeP the feel- ing of Palecek’s natural Materials so I came up with four new finishes that are all meant to mix in one room together. In this Chicago dining room, Nate Berkus Associates created a timeless and inviting milieu that is ready for a party at a moment’s notice. By infusing the scene with charismatic details like old pottery, distressed chairs, a mahogany table and a rich velvety brown color for the walls, the mood is instantly set. “Always have fresh flowers, a fun seating arrangement, tried-and-true recipes, an extra-long playlist of great music and a clever takeaway to keep your guests talking,” suggests Lauren Buxbaum, design director along with Sasha Adler at Berkus’ firm. Luxe asked design pros Marika Meyer, Sheridan French and Monica Pedersen to elaborate on some of their preferred party picks. Guest List: Custom, price available upon request; smockpaper.com Small Soiree: I absolutely adore Smock Paper. Their sustainable papers, gorgeous calligraphy and typography always fit the bill. My favorite fonts are Harrison, Dear Joe and plain old American Typewriter—you can’t go wrong with a classic! Big Bash: Byrd & Bleecker in Fort Worth is a creative gem bursting with invite inspiration for memorable events. Sheridan French Marika Meyer Monica PederSen Small Soiree: I strive for an organic look and feel for my tablescapes, and like to inject flowers, fruits, rocks and leaves. I turn to Jan Barboglio for my glassware. Big Bash: I break out my crystal, preferably something from William Yeoward. And guests should prepare for tequila served in some form at my parties—Don Julio Añejo always makes an appearance. Small Soiree: I don’t place much weight on sending guests home with something tangible but rather supplying them with great memories! Big Bash: For a fancier affair, it’s nice to have a little something, whether it’s a small treat in pretty packaging or sweet-smelling soaps or bath salts. And of course anything that continues the theme of the event. Small Soiree: B Designs Letterpress is a must for those get-togethers that you want to feel really special. I prefer using a flat card with Garamond typeface. Big Bash: I turn to Crane & Co.’s ecruwhite, 100-percent cotton, Embassy-size fold with a London script font. Guests know they’re in for a splendid evening when they receive this invite. Small Soiree: We recently discovered the art of homemade preserves and have had so much fun with different flavors. They’re a great treat to share with guests. Big Bash: Setting the mood with candlelight is a must. I couple tapers with ample votives that I place in unexpected holders; like antique cut-crystal sugar dishes that are the perfect size for a votive. Small Soiree: I love Tocca’s small votives. Their light and delicate fragrance can work well in any home, as they don’t overpower a room with their scent. Big Bash: I always send friends away with a small assorted box of Leonidas Belgian chocolates. The packaging is a perfect parting gift to an elegant evening. Small Soiree: I am a bit of a Paper Source junkie when it comes to letterpress—I can always count on them for fashionable color options for all my party accessories. Big Bash: The designer patterns that Kate Spade offers are to die for, and then it’s about the typography. I usually fall back on a classic easy-to-read but always-elegant Bodoni. Small Soiree: There’s nothing like beautiful pillar candles mixed with an array of votives to create ambience on a table. It’s so simple yet so memorable. Big Bash: Niermann Weeks has beautiful chandeliers that instantly add glamour to a space, which is exactly what I aspire to when planning an elegant affair. Everyone will take notice. Small Soiree: There’s always the go-to set of candles, but I like to rely on good times and laughs to leave that lasting impression. T homas Pheasant carries his camera and sketchbook everywhere. “That’s how my process starts,” says the Washington, D.C. interior designer. And, as is evident in the furnishings of his 75-piece collection for Baker, the process ends with the designer translating those visual experiences into his own sophisticated language. Sometimes the connection is immediate and sometimes it has to emerge: The idea for his Column dining table instantly struck as he looked up at Paris’ Saint- Sulpice church, whereas the line’s palette developed as he kept recalling the silvery buildings seen in Venice. A floral pattern he photographed on a Paris apartment resurfaced on the St. Honoré chest and again on the Petal drum table. “That table is really inspired by a Valentino dress Halle Berry wore,” explains Pheasant. “I had the detail in the collection, saw the dress and sketched it out. That’s how inspiration works for me.” 1. inspire “Architecture is a leading force of inspiration for me,” says Pheasant, who photographed the Saint-Sulpice church in Paris to reference for his Column dining table. 2. sketch Pheasant sketched the Athens lounge chair, his take on the classic klismos form, while on an airplane. “It started the ball rolling for the collection,” he says. 3. create His furniture designs, as with his interiors work, balance historic roots with modern silhouettes. “I wanted to study the past, but strip it down to the essentials,” says Pheasant.

R enowned fabricator George Smith forever changed the perspective on designer furnishings: What was once designed for mere function is now a creative outlet, defining personal style. With the launch of a luxury outdoor collection and a new London showroom, the brand contin- ues to keep patrons guessing as to what’s next while never straying from its foundation. Since its inception, the famed furniture maker is still operating from a quaint factory in northern England where each piece is handmade by a team of artisans using natural, raw materials. “There is a timelessness and sophistication that allows our pieces to work in a myriad of diverse interior schemes,” explains Patricia Spado, director of U.S. operations and sales. And the distinguished brand has infiltrated some of the world’s most presti- gious homes and hotels, a muse for countless architects and designers. “The structural design of our furniture,” says Spado, “is the blank canvas on which designers produce their masterpieces.” “It is the integrity in both design and craftsmanship that allows George Smith furniture to transcend simple classification.” -PATRICIA SPADO, GEORGE SMITH The Early Victorian chesterfield sofa is possibly the most iconic and recognizable silhouette in the collection. The Conversation piece is keeping an open dialogue as the intriguing product continues to inspire designers. Whether highlighting emerging artists like Chuck Voelter, Olga Porter and Rimi Yang, to name just a few, or exhibiting masterworks from Picasso, Chagall, Rembrandt and Matisse, it’s the collective balance of periods, knowledge—Russell and her staff thoroughly research everything they showcase—and curating that resonates most with her mission. “What displays on the walls here has a deeper meaning once you get to know the artist,” she explains. “I feel a great sense of accomplishment putting these collections together.” Russell, who also hosts lectures, visiting artists and themed international exhibits, says she’s most gratified by the impact she has on her clients’ lives. “The smile on someone’s face after making a connection with a piece of art is truly amazing.” russell-collection.com Apparition at the Circus, a signed lithograph by Marc Chagall, from the Russell Collection Fine Art Gallery.

Enthralled by the electric energy provider’s stark, industrial nature, the linear silhouettes run rampant throughout Twaddle’s work, from charcoal and coffee-and-ink drawings to hand-knotted Persian rugs. “I’m interested in things that are overlooked, and in finding the beauty that exists within,” says the Houston-based artist. “In that sense I consider myself more of an editor than a creator.” Twaddle’s inability to find carpeting for his own home led to a serendipitous commission from local dealer Carol Piper Rugs, which helped bring into fruition full-fledged textile and rug collections. Combining both the fluidity of fine art with the calculated precision of geometry, Twaddle’s Transformer images bring a fresh perspective to an often unnoticed entity. “I am amazed at how unintentionally lyrical and exquisite linear configurations can be,” says Twaddle. “I find those things and reframe them in a way that gets people to pay attention.” randytwaddle.com Why coffee? I spilled some on a sketchbook one day and found the result really appealing, so I started to incorporate it into my work in a more controlled way. And when she sets her sights on a big game prize—like an antique camelback sofa, Regency étagère, brass-and-burl end table or Lucite lamp—rarely does the owner of Dallas vintage shop Again & Again miss. “I don’t want what someone else has chosen for me,” declares Pritchard. “I want to find something and put a personal spin on it, whether it’s my own or someone else’s.” That quest has evolved into a successful business, as Pritchard’s delightfully exuberant and original approach to period pieces has developed a loyal following. “We look for things that will stand the test of time, design-wise,” she says, but nothing is off-limits when it comes to reinventing a piece, from covering it with zebra pony hair (the shop’s signature print) to cutting off its arms or lacquering it in an unexpected hue. “I consider myself a furniture artist more than anything,” says Pritchard. “I see the beauty in everything.” againandagain.com Who’s inspiring you right noW? The journey to achieve such an interior is one that many designers find themselves in time and again. For this kitchen, it was San Francisco-based Kendall Wilkinson who had to strike the right balance between the distinct qualities. “Once I found the floral fabric seen on the backs of the dining chairs, everything came together in a creative kismet of sorts,” she says. Using stainless-steel appliances and white subway tiles as her base, Wilkinson peppered color and injected warmth into the space’s canvas, beginning with honed ruivina marble slabs. The emerald-hued stone (a color plucked from the sprightly textile) added contrast to the all-white cabinetry and steel, but Wilkinson went a step further and introduced more textures with a seamless wood flank that flows straight off the marble, resulting in a bar-height table. “I wanted all the neighboring rooms to feel balanced and evoke a strong sense of flow from one living area to another.” k i t c h e n p h o t o : a a r o n l e i t z . kendall wilkinson, kendall wilkinson design & Home This is a very lived-in kitchen where durability as well as aesthetically pleasing features and finishes were key ingredients to its design. “ “ a spirited floral pattern and unremitting attention to detail formulated the recipe for this dynamic northern california home. green LIGHT kendall wilkinson
