Understanding gender roles in small ruminant health management in Ethiopia ILRI
Veterinarians in Ethiopia conducted focus group discussions with men and women to understand gender roles in small ruminant health management. Discussions revealed that small ruminants are particularly important for women to generate income. Both men and women identified respiratory diseases as the highest health priority, though men also noted neurological diseases observed during herding. A subsequent household survey of 444 homes found differences in perceptions between men and women about their roles in small ruminant management. The study provided insights to design gender-responsive interventions to improve small ruminant health and productivity.

The document discusses a study on dairy farmer preferences for animal health services in Kenya. The study used a discrete choice experiment with 300 dairy farmers to determine how they value different characteristics of animal health services. The farmers indicated their top priorities as: 1) services offered alongside animal husbandry training, 2) follow-ups after treatment, 3) follow-ups after vaccinations and deworming, 4) services offered at dairy hubs, and 5) flexible payment systems. Understanding farmer preferences can help design more effective and efficient delivery of animal health services.
The document outlines ILRI's research programs within several CGIAR Research Programs led by various organizations. ILRI conducts research on livestock and fish systems productivity, dryland systems, policies and markets related to livestock, agriculture diseases prevention, livestock and water interactions, climate change adaptation in livestock systems, and sustainable intensification of crop-livestock systems. ILRI also supports a forage genebank in Ethiopia through the Managing and Sustaining Crop Collections program led by the Global Crop Diversity Trust.

Animal health research to improve small ruminant productivity in Ethiopia ILRI
This document summarizes research being conducted by the International Livestock Research Institute to improve small ruminant productivity in Ethiopia. The research uses participatory methods to understand farmers' perspectives on disease constraints. It also conducts sero-surveys and literature reviews to identify key diseases and address knowledge gaps. The goal is to develop control programs, vaccines, diagnostic tools and business models to improve animal health services and tackle diseases such as contagious caprine pleuropneumonia, peste des petits ruminants, brucellosis and parasites affecting small ruminants.
Antibiotic Stewardship in the Human SectorWalt Whitman
This document discusses strategies for reducing antibiotic use in livestock agriculture in the UK. It outlines Marks and Spencer's approach, which follows the 4R framework of record, replace, reduce, and refine antibiotic use. M&S works closely with farmers in its dedicated milk pool to monitor antibiotic use and drive improvement through annual benchmarking reports. The goal is to ensure responsible antibiotic stewardship and the highest standards of animal welfare.
Public health is dependent on animal health in rural areas because poor animal health directly affects the human food supply. Veterinary public health entails the diagnosis, surveillance, epidemiology, control, prevention and elimination of Zoonoses. Unsatisfactory implementation of stringent disease control, meat inspectorate and drug dispensation legislations prevents the efficient production of food of animal origin; creating obstacles to international trade in animals and animal products and hence an impediment to overall socioeconomic development
The document outlines 7 initial proposed Megaprograms (MPs) that will guide research under the new CGIAR Consortium model. The MPs include: 1) Integrated agriculture systems for the poor, 2) Policies and markets for enabling agricultural incomes, 3) Sustainable increases in staple crop productivity, 4) Agriculture, nutrition and health, 5) Water scarcity and land degradation, 6) Forests and trees, and 7) Climate change. The bulk of livestock research is expected to be contained within MP3 on livestock and fish, but MP4 on health and nutrition and other MPs may also include some livestock components. A Consortium Board and CEO will oversee research, and performance will be measured through contracts between

One health and its importance; notes - Dr. ROBIN.pptxROBIN VAVACHAN
The document discusses One Health and the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health. It notes that human destruction of biodiversity and disruption of ecosystems can create conditions for diseases like COVID-19 to emerge. When humans disturb natural habitats and kill or cage wild animals, it can release viruses from their natural hosts, with humans becoming the new host. The document advocates for a multisectoral One Health approach involving coordination across human health, animal health, and environmental sectors to address health threats at the human-animal interface.

This document provides context and outlines the objectives of Kristina Roesel's PhD thesis on assessing the parasitic burden in the smallholder pig value chain in Uganda. The thesis aims to 1) understand if parasites are perceived as a production constraint by farmers, 2) estimate parasitic burden in pigs at farm, slaughter, and retail levels, 3) identify risk factors for parasitic infections, and 4) assess risks to public health from pork consumption. Preliminary results from farm surveys found worms and mange to be top health issues. The thesis is funded by the Safe Food, Fair Food project and aims to improve pig value chains and reduce health risks from pork-borne parasites in Uganda.
