The document describes the Aegean Startups accelerator program run by the University of the Aegean in Greece. The accelerator supports entrepreneurship across the Aegean islands and connects students, universities, and local businesses. It runs "rounds" focused on key industries in the Aegean like tourism, agriculture, and energy. The rounds identify business needs, issue open calls for proposals, fund top startups, and help the startups launch. The accelerator also utilizes an online platform to enhance collaborations and provide resources. It aims to expand internationally and enhance its tools to support more startups. The accelerator highlights the importance of understanding local demands and enhancing reach to identify innovative solutions.
Open government data - the three legged stoolLaurence Millar
The document discusses open government data and proposes a "three-legged stool" approach with supply of data, demand for data, and tools to utilize the data. It advocates making government data openly available and reusable to increase public and economic value. Specific examples are given of types of government data that could be opened up like environmental, transportation, and research data. The benefits mentioned include improving data quality, allowing the public to access data they funded, and enabling innovative uses of data beyond what government agencies can achieve.
This document discusses how open data can be utilized commercially. Open data about housing, energy usage, public spending, and other areas can help businesses target customers and develop new applications. Sharing medical and scientific data more openly allows problems to be solved faster. Some businesses like newspapers are already openly sharing some of their data to develop public trust. Consultancy is offered on how open data and Web 3.0 technologies can help other businesses in unexpected ways. The value of open data is in how it can be reused in new and innovative applications.

A Vision for a European e-Infrastructure for the 21st CenturyEd Dodds
This document proposes a vision for a next generation European e-infrastructure to support data-intensive science over the coming decade. It recommends establishing a common platform consisting of: 1) basic infrastructure services like networks, identity management, and cloud/data facilities; 2) a set of software services and tools; and 3) investment in application software. This platform would provide underlying services while being adaptable to different research community needs. It aims to build on Europe's experience operating large-scale e-infrastructures and prepare for explosive data growth in science.
You have probably heard about the Big Data Value PPP and the Big Data Value Association, but, are you sure you know what is behind them? Do you know which are the priorities and objectives of the European strategy on Big Data Research and Innovation and the way European payers’ money is being invested? What is a data platform, data sharing initiatives, or data market size? And a data space? Is Europe lagging behind the US and China as we are usually told? And looking at the future. Which steps are being taken to define a data-driven Artificial Intelligence? Too many questions that start with a single answer: your attendance to this webinar.

Boardsource Profile of TechSoup's 'Co-CEO' model July 2011TechSoup
This document summarizes key points from an article in the Board Member magazine about generational tensions on nonprofit boards.
The article discusses tensions that can arise between different generations on boards, with a focus on Baby Boomers and Millennials. While technology use and work ethics may differ between generations, the article argues that great leadership can overcome these tensions by articulating a compelling vision and understanding people's diverse aspirations. An example is given of Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, who successfully led a group with different goals by focusing on their shared main goal and accommodating their side aspirations. The article concludes by advising focusing on leadership rather than secondary generational issues.

Does your library offer programs related to coding? Coding is quickly gaining traction as an essential digital skill in the 21st century, and many public libraries are offering coding classes for youth and adults as a way of promoting STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). The challenge is that coding is often a new skill for librarians and library staff who are responsible for offering programs. The good news is that you don’t have to be an expert in computer science to offer effective educational programs that teach coding skills. There are many free resources that can be used as a guide to starting a coding club at your library, no experience required.
See two examples of public libraries that have offered coding clubs using free curriculum provided by library partners.
-- The Memorial Hall Library (Andover, MA) offered a coding club in 2016 in partnership with Girls Who Code, a nonprofit organization that provides a framework and curriculum for coding clubs.

Creating a company based on digital platforms in EuropeMarco Torregrossa
This document discusses the rise of digital platforms and the collaborative economy. It notes that some of the largest companies in various industries, like transportation and accommodation, own few or no assets themselves. It then provides a framework for understanding the collaborative economy, including peer-to-peer learning, production, finance, governance, and consumption enabled by digital platforms. The document concludes by offering seven policy recommendations for regulators to support the collaborative economy, such as applying regulations proportionately, setting health and safety standards, and helping the digitally excluded access opportunities on platforms.
The document introduces the Knowledge Hub, an online platform for collaboration within the UK local government sector. The Knowledge Hub aims to connect people across local authorities to share knowledge, best practices, ask questions, and benchmark performance. It emphasizes the importance of a hybrid cloud model and standards-based interoperability.
Open source & mobility in europe white paperFabMob
This white paper discusses the potential of open source to drive innovation in mobility across Europe. It argues that open source can [1] bring useful resources to entrepreneurs, [2] help change mobility behaviors through a network of pioneers, and [3] reduce costs for individual actors. Several examples are given of open source projects in automotive, transportation, and mobility more broadly. The document advocates that European governments allocate public funds to produce open resources in sustainable mobility areas.
a. compare and contrast the nuances of varied online platforms, sites, and content to best achieve specific class objectives or address situational challenges (CS_ICT11/12-ICTPT-Ia-b-1);
b. share plans on how to use your knowledge on the different trends in ICT; and
c. independently compose an insightful reflection on the nature of ICT in the context of your life, society, and professional tracks (Arts, TechVoc, Sports, Academic).
The document provides an overview of open source and its history:
- Open source began with early computer programs in the 1950s and 1960s being shared amongst researchers and students, with source code distributed to allow modifications and improvements.
- In the late 1960s, proprietary software emerged and open source declined as companies sought to protect their products and charge for software licenses.
- More recently, some large tech companies have adopted open source strategies to rapidly develop new technologies and standards before competitors by attracting collaborators and building critical mass on open platforms. Open source is now seen as an important approach for European industries to develop strategies to compete with large tech companies.
The document discusses how social media and technology are transforming business and education. It outlines current and future trends, including the increasing use of cloud-based technologies. Specific applications covered include using multimedia and YouTube in education, and social media strategies for businesses. Challenges and opportunities for education are examined, such as electronic books, mobile learning, augmented reality, and learning analytics. The role of video, file sharing, and online education tools are also addressed.
HTML5 is a new digital commons that was finalized in 2014 and strengthened the technological capabilities of the World Wide Web. It was developed through a collective and cooperative process between the WhatWG and W3C standards bodies. The development of HTML5 helped address issues from the proliferation of proprietary technologies, the rise of mobile devices, and the W3C's slow progress. HTML5 adoption has led to a new approach of living standards that can quickly incorporate useful features without lengthy deliberation. However, questions remain regarding how data collection and use impacts user privacy and commodification in the digital economy.
The presentation aims to emphasize the need for more applications and prototypes in the area of the Semantic Web that will showcase the various research findings and technologies.
