2
Grid Computing
 a computer network in which each
computer's resources are shared with
every other computer in the system
 used to build a
Virtual supercomputer
using a middleware to
achieve a common task
3
Cloud Computing ≠ Grid Computing
Why Cloud Computing ?
 Everybody is Talking about it.....: a buzzword
 Cloud is here to stay
 Is changing your Job
 Link between business and IT is
growing ever tighter
4
5
Using a network of remote servers hosted on the Internet to store,
manage, and process data, rather than a local server or a personal
computer.
What is Cloud Computing ?
 Delivery model of computing services over the
internet
 Software & hardware based
computing resources -> network service
 On Demand self-service
 Ubiquitous access: Anywhere,
Any Time,
Any Device
 Quickly grow or shrink to meet the change in
demand
 Pay as you go 6
Applications
7
₪ Messaging – includes Gmail, Calendar and Google Talk
₪ Collaboration – Google Docs, Video and Sites
₪ Security – email security, encryption and archiving
Growth Forecast
8
 Client computers : device that the end user interact
with cloud
 Distributed servers : servers in geographically different
places but acts as if they are
working each other
 Datacenters : collection of servers where
application is placed & is
accessed via internet
9
CLOUD COMPONENTS
10
Cloud Components
11
12
DEPLOYMENT MODELS
Defines type of access to the cloud i.e. how the cloud is located
Private cloud : used exclusively by a single
organization comprising multiple consumers
Community cloud : used exclusively by a specific community of
consumers from organizations that have
shared interest.
Public cloud : provisioned for open use by the general
public.
Hybrid cloud : composition of two or more distinct cloud
infrastructures that are bound together by
standardized or proprietary technology.
13
Deployment Models
14
SERVICE MODELS
∂ Software as a Service (SaaS) : End-user applications delivered as a
service, rather than on-premises
software.
∂ Platform as a Service (PaaS) : Application platform or middleware
as a service on which developers can
build and deploy custom
applications.
∂ Infrastructure as a Service : Computer, storage or other IT
(IaaS) infrastructure as a service
rather than as dedicated
capability.
15
1. Software as a Service (SaaS)
€ Consumer use the provider’s applications running on a cloud
infrastructure
€ Consumer does not manage or control the underlying cloud
infrastructure
€ Limited user specific application configuration settings
€ Usually Multi Tenant environment
€ Highly scalable architecture & Usually billed on Usage
€ Examples : Facebook, NetSuite, Gmail, Hotmail, Office Live, Flickr
 Provides runtime environment for applications, development &
deployment tools etc.
 Consumer does not manage or control the underlying cloud
infrastructure including network, servers, operating systems, or
storage.
 Consumer has control over the deployed applications and possibly
configuration settings for the application-hosting environment
 Support the complete life cycle of building & delivering web
applications and services entirely from the internet.
 Examples : Google’s App Engine, Amazon EC2, Microsoft Azure 16
2. Platform as a Service (PaaS)
17
3. Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)
₪ Delivery of Technology infrastructure as an on demand
scalable service
₪ Basically hosted Data centers and Servers
₪ Access to fundamental resources such as physical machines,
virtual machines, virtual storage etc.
₪ Usually Multi Tenant virtualized environment
₪ Can be coupled with Managed Services for OS and
application support
₪ Examples : Rackspace, AT&T Enterprise Business ,OpSource,
Datapipe
18
MERITS
 Run your business; don’t worry about your IT
 Fresh Software
 Backup and Recovery
 Reduce your carbon footprint and Cost Efficient
 Scalability and Reliability
 Work from anywhere
 Improved security and compliance
19
DEMERITS
ꭓ Privacy and Prone to Attack
ꭓ Downtime
ꭓ Vendor Lock-In
ꭓ Limited Control
ꭓ Reliable Internet Service
