The Software Defined Enterprise - Session Sponsored by AmcomAmazon Web Services
AWS Summit 2014 Perth - Breakout 4
It’s time to ride the software wave – for too long IT organisations have been hamstrung and spread thin by having to manage the infrastructure and applications, rather being able to focus on delivering the benefits that the business demands. During this session, Brett explores why we (as IT professionals) should be thinking about driving everything we do with software innovation; how that relates to the cloud (and why Brett hates that word); and what the path forward is.
Brett Looney, Head of Innovation, Amcom will be presenting this session. Brett has been involved in the telecommunications & information technology sector for over 25 years. He has been a key part of a number of highly successful, national technology businesses where he actively contributed to the growth of their operations. Brett has developed a solid reputation as a creative thinker and spokesperson for the ICT industry.
In 2011, Brett joined Amcom as Head of Innovation, leading the use of new technology across the group and Amcom’s national customer base.

Digital Transformation: Mission Meets Modernizationscoopnewsgroup
Digital transformation requires organizations to embrace change and shift from the status quo as technology transforms how we live and work. It involves modernizing traditional IT through cloud adoption and automation, then investing in modern technologies like cloud-native applications and data analytics. Digital transformation must occur across three key areas - transforming IT through hybrid cloud, empowering the digital workforce, and taking an intelligence-driven, mission-focused approach to security. Organizations need to begin their transformation to accomplish their mission at digital speed.
In 2016, cloud technologies went mainstream. But with maturity came the realization that moving to the cloud doesn’t happen overnight. CIOs are prioritizing hosted computing and cloud data storage. But they’re approaching the shift as a gradual, multi-year journey.
Many startups and small businesses will continue to go all-in on cloud. But enterprises will find success in a slow but steady move from on-prem. Hybrid ecosystems—of data, software, and infrastructure—will be the reality for most established organizations.
As this shift to cloud progresses where are things are headed? This paper highlights the top cloud trends for 2017.
The document discusses a Dell EMC, Cloudera, and Syncsort solution for offloading ETL workloads from data warehouses to Hadoop. This time, we're diving into the murky waters of the Fuxnet malware, a brainchild of the illustrious Blackjack hacking group.
Let's set the scene: Moscow, a city unsuspectingly going about its business, unaware that it's about to be the star of Blackjack's latest production. The method? Oh, nothing too fancy, just the classic "let's potentially disable sensor-gateways" move.
In a move of unparalleled transparency, Blackjack decides to broadcast their cyber conquests on ruexfil.com. Because nothing screams "covert operation" like a public display of your hacking prowess, complete with screenshots for the visually inclined.
Ah, but here's where the plot thickens: the initial claim of 2,659 sensor-gateways laid to waste? A slight exaggeration, it seems. The actual tally? A little over 500. It's akin to declaring world domination and then barely managing to annex your backyard.
For Blackjack, ever the dramatists, hint at a sequel, suggesting the JSON files were merely a teaser of the chaos yet to come. Because what's a cyberattack without a hint of sequel bait, teasing audiences with the promise of more digital destruction?

This document presents a comprehensive analysis of the Fuxnet malware, attributed to the Blackjack hacking group, which has reportedly targeted infrastructure. The analysis delves into various aspects of the malware, including its technical specifications, impact on systems, defense mechanisms, propagation methods, targets, and the motivations behind its deployment. By examining these facets, the document aims to provide a detailed overview of Fuxnet's capabilities and its implications for cybersecurity.
The document offers a qualitative summary of the Fuxnet malware, based on the information publicly shared by the attackers and analyzed by cybersecurity experts. This analysis is invaluable for security professionals, IT specialists, and stakeholders in various industries, as it not only sheds light on the technical intricacies of a sophisticated cyber threat but also emphasizes the importance of robust cybersecurity measures in safeguarding critical infrastructure against emerging threats. Through this detailed examination, the document contributes to the broader understanding of cyber warfare tactics and enhances the preparedness of organizations to defend against similar attacks in the future.

Conversational agents, or chatbots, are increasingly used to access all sorts of services using natural language. While open-domain chatbots - like ChatGPT - can converse on any topic, task-oriented chatbots - the focus of this paper - are designed for specific tasks, like booking a flight, obtaining customer support, or setting an appointment. Like any other software, task-oriented chatbots need to be properly tested, usually by defining and executing test scenarios (i.e., sequences of user-chatbot interactions). However, there is currently a lack of methods to quantify the completeness and strength of such test scenarios, which can lead to low-quality tests, and hence to buggy chatbots.
To fill this gap, we propose adapting mutation testing (MuT) for task-oriented chatbots. To this end, we introduce a set of mutation operators that emulate faults in chatbot designs, an architecture that enables MuT on chatbots built using heterogeneous technologies, and a practical realisation as an Eclipse plugin. Moreover, we evaluate the applicability, effectiveness and efficiency of our approach on open-source chatbots, with promising results.

Good Afternoon…it’s my privilege and pleasure to represent VMware today.
Many of you in the audience are very familiar with VMware, but for those that may not be as familiar with us …here are a few data points Become the leading Data Center Automation Company
[Fulfilling our vision of simplifying IT has made us an industry-leading software company.
More than 500,000 customers, from small and midsize companies to large enterprises—including 100 percent of Fortune 500 companies—use VMware technologies and services.
More than 75,000 partners, including technology and consulting partners, top distributors and resellers, and system vendors and integrators, help provide customers with freedom and choice.
Through the broadest set of cloud service provider partners—more than 10,000 of them—VMware is making the hybrid cloud a reality.
VMware stays close to customers with offices in more than 100 countries.
Innovation begins with the more than 14,000 VMware employees.
Let’s start by taking a look at the world that we live in today….and the challenges we are facing
The world that we're increasingly participating in is a liquid world where we see old rigid structures give way.
In this dynamic, shape-shifting environment, old ways are giving way to new ways.
We're seeing that education is no longer just the classroom, but it extends to wherever you are.
Work is no longer a physical place, but it's what you do.
Retail is mobile and transactions are happening everywhere that you are.
Transportation is being redefined with electric cars and self-driven cars, currency redefined by categories like Bitcoin.
And entertainment is the prototypical example of digital transformation.
We're seeing that our world today is becoming more liquid than ever before.
As we go into liquid business environment, the contrast of rigid structures then and liquid business now are significant and dramatic.
For example, I used to have to control all assets.
Today, I can leverage assets and use them in powerful ways.
A company like Uber has a market cap that is now equal to that of Hertz and Avis combined, and they don't own any assets.
We're seeing that innovation is now the speed of rapid innovation and fail fast.
App deployment that used to take months or years can now be automated or virtually instant.
Jim Collins' famous book is Built to Last--sorry Jim, you need to write a new one; It's now “Built to Change,” and it’s all about how fast organizations can move in this liquid world.
What are the challenges that limit our path forward
You can do traditional apps, or cloud-native apps.
You could satisfy IT, or you could satisfy developers.
You could be on-premises or off-premises.
You could have fast instant environments, or safe, secure, and compliant.
Our approach at VMware is to bridge these two worlds.
We believe we have the unique power to be the “and” across these divides; that we allow you to have safe, secure, and instant and elastic scale, moving from the tyranny of the “or” to the power of “and.”
This is what we think of as brave new IT.
That's the power of “and,” a simple strategy about bridging these two worlds, but it also means letting go of things from the past.
That hardware-defined data center is comfortable but expensive, slow, brittle, manual. We have to leave that behind.
The future is about the software-defined enterprise, and three core characteristics of this environment—fluid, instant, and choice.
The only way to deliver the Power of & is The Software Defined Enterprise..
It starts first and foremost with a fundamental the shift ..to a software defined datacenter…where workloads and applications can be delivered on premise or off premise known as hybrid cloud computing through a set of common management tools…
at the same time users want to get access to their data anytime, anywhere, at any place.
That is our Vision…Our Strategy and Our Direction
VMware virtualization has already saved companies 10 of billions of dollars in savings and continues to save customers billions annually. What we are doing now through this compute layer innovation of virtualization is to take those same principals of cutting this connection to hardware and enabling resource pooling and abstraction….and aligning those principals to all layers in the datacenter…Networking, Storage, and Security. Our thesis is to move our technology horizontally across the datacenter…to create a common service delivery platform.
But this requires common management that policy based with a high degree of automation….VMware Management offerings include Cloud automation for provisioning and cloud operation for the practioner that needs to know what's going on to tie back to cloud computing.
Network virtualization – The concept leveraging virtualization very similar to what we did in the compute layer….what we have done is break the control plane or data plane to add tremendous value particularly around Network Security…Most data centers today are like an EGG…with a hard crusty exterior and a soft gooey interior…what do I mean by that….think about 80% of all money spent on Network Security is spent on North Bound South Bound Firewall protection….We would love to build firewalls inside the datacenter for every end VM but think about that….how many appliances would you need? With NSX you can set policies to protect every VM…this is what we call Micro Segmentation…
Storage- Leverage the existing arrays or through VSAN to take advantage of local disk and FLASH. Test and DEV and VDI or good uses cases…tapping into unused capacity…and once again through our common management tools you can deploy into the public cloud.
Requires common management that policy based with a high degree of automation….VMware Management offerings include Cloud automation for provisioning and cloud operation for the practioner that needs to know what's going on to tie back to cloud computing.
ITBM- for SHOWBACK to satisfy the needs of the CFO why are you spending more money and what is my ROI…it’s called IT Business Management…and think about the power of SHOWFORWARD to the lines of business to be able to budget appropriately for business expense when you need to be proactive about the cost…This is a powerful tool for managing, automating, operating, orchestrating and remediating your resources in IT.
Ladies and Gentlemen…That is the Software Defined Data Center…we had the vision four years ago when our EVP Raghu Rhaguram coined that phrase…we have pushed the agenda since then and we are executing it today
We have developed hybrid cloud solution built for enterprise – and tailored for the new rules of IT
Seamlessly and securely extends your data center to create a liquid pool of resources
Approach founded on hybridity:
Build in the cloud and deploy on-premises and vice-versa.
Apps and data co-exist in a unified environment
Fuel innovation via new applications delivered faster and cheaper on your existing platform without having to re-architect an entire environment.
Do all this through your existing people, processes and tools
And, most importantly, you want choice. Don’t want vendor lock-in.
That is why we have built network of more than 3,500 partners
Hybrid Cloudis the next phase of cloud adoption.
[T] So…are you pushing this forward or slowing it down?
Key Assumptions:
Optimized Hardware Footprint: improve server consolidation by abstracting beyond physical clusters , right-sizing virtual machines , and connecting previously network isolated resources
Reduction in HW Support:
Reduction in Power & Cooling: fewer servers, simplified network fabric, and a new tier of storage
Reduction in Datacenter Floor Space: again fewer servers, fewer network switches, and no separate rack for new tier of storage
Improved IT Administrator Productivity: tools to automate monitoring, troubleshooting!
We have developed hybrid cloud solution built for enterprise – and tailored for the new rules of IT
Now lets discuss why The VMware Hybrid cloud is the right solution at the right time
5 years ago 2%
Now is only 6%
Experimental to Professional to Mass Market to Legacy
The line of business thinks IT is to slow and they have Ferocious appetite for Infrastructure capacity…developing multiple incompatible approaches
Very large monthly bills…we have seen as much as 500K per
Meanwhile IT maintains the accountability
This experimental approach does not scale…
Think about the implication of your existing apps…when you try to meld that back with new apps and bring back in house…you cant…the apps check in but they can not check out!
Create a seamless extension of your data center…get out of the experimental phase
IT now becomes that Service Broker…leverage the Hybrid Cloud
This is the new approach…SAME Management, Same Networking, Same Security.
Do this in a seamless way with an underlying architecture that is is the same…if you want to federate your workloads or move them around the datacenter and Public Cloud requires…the same architecture
Move workloads back… The VM, file format and .dsk file are all the same…this is HYBRIDITY…the next new word in IT
The Future Is Hybrid Video
Seamlessly and securely extends your data center to create a liquid pool of resources
Approach founded on hybridity:
Build in the cloud and deploy on-premises and vice-versa.
Apps and data co-exist in a unified environment
Fuel innovation via new applications delivered faster and cheaper on your existing platform without having to re-architect an entire environment.
Do all this through your existing people, processes and tools
Hybrid Cloudis the next phase of cloud adoption.
I hope I did a good job of showing you how simple and sensible our Hybrid Cloud is….but in case I didn’t please say hello to my little friend…I call him Hybridity
Finally our third pillar to our vision or as Sanjay Poonen or GM likes to say the “head to the body of SDDC and that is EUC….we believe is the workspace of the future!
In EUC We have been transforming our portfolio over the past 18 months…it started with the acquisition of Desktone the leading provider of DaaS. We have been aggressively hiring a flood of talent that is flocking to VMware because of our strategy and finally the biggest acquisition in VMware history…the acquisition of Airwatch the Gold Standard in MDM.
When we think about the FUTURE of IT it could not be more evident than the world of End User Computing because it is changing right before our very eyes….think about the mainframe era with thousands of IT USERS and HUNDREDS of Aps and than the client Server Era with Millions of Users and Thousands of Aps to the mobile cloud era with Billions of Users and Millions of Aps…its truly astonishing…in fact of businesses today are not think of a mobile first agenda they are probably going to be left behind…because users are going from
Users: “43% of information workers use 3 or more devices at work to increase productivity”
Apps: “50% of Enterprise applications no longer run on Windows. More of them moving to the Cloud”
Data: “My sales reps load their documents into DropBox, I’m worried about security as its all outside the firewall”
Move from point products to UNIFIED SOLUTIONS…our commitment is to be best in breed in all areas of EUC…Unified and optimized but NOT tethered together
Ammassed a strong portfolio to allow you to access with one action from one consul…
