Biography of Stephen A. Adeyinka

♣ Stephen E. Ayo Adeyinka is a resident of New York. He retired recently as the Executive Director of ABSW Senior
Citizens Center, a multicultural, multipurpose elderly care program, which was initially funded by NYC Human resources
Administration and later years by Department for the Aging. Adeyinka is an experienced Educator, Administrator, former
Chief External Examiner for Community Health Officer Examination and Consultant in Primary Health Care to Federal
Government of Nigeria, Medical Social Worker, Health Education Specialist, Church Lay Speaker and Community Advocate.
He earns a Bachelor of Arts in Health and Social Services, Vermont; Masters of Public Health, California; Doctor of
Philosophy Community Health, Manchester; Post Graduate in Institute of Public Health, Minnesota. He is a fellow of the
Royal Society of Health, and an affiliate of several professional organizations. He taught Public Health Education, Health
Administration, and Social Epidemiology at three Medical Colleges in Nigeria; taught at Adelphi University, New York and at
Manhattan Borough Community College. He coined and founded the cultural psychotherapy during his residence in Nigeria.
He revamped ABSW Senior Citizens Center program and lead it to its 42nd
years of services before he stepped away in March,
2016.He brought excellent skills, passion to understand the needs of people and a background in service delivery, particularly
in the field of health to his position. Noted improvements in the Model program occurred during his leadership. Such as the
International Senior Fiesta, Inter-State Intergeneration, the Grief Support, and Senior Computer Literacy, to mention a few,
organized through self-sacrificing efforts are exemplary. Adeyinka community activities transcend his active participation in
the ABSW senior program. He served as a volunteer pulpit speaker and religion education teacher to various churches in New
York metropolis, including Metropolitan United Methodist, Unitarian Universalist, and Christ Apostolic.
♣ One of the many outstanding projects designed and implemented by Stephen was the International Community Development
Project which achieved 45.9 percent in infant mortality rate and the development of the whole ecology of African villages in
Nigeria (as UUSC Project Coordinator, in collaboration with World Health Organization, Nigerian Government and the local
people). During the heat of the civil right movement activities in the South, Stephen was in Mississippi, served as Senior
Research Associate and acting head of department of research, planning and evaluation of Delta Health Center & Mound
Bayou Hospital. Stephen designed and executed an operational community survey for four southern Mississippi counties. The
findings of his survey were helpful to the City of Mound Bayou and the health institution in planning and funding social and
health services for the people. He also served as a Medical Social Worker with Mound Bayou Hospital prior to its merger with
Delta Health Center. He assisted to provide health and social services, including the mass voter registration in the south rural
communities. His operational research also includes the Diagnostic categories of community health delivery in rural
Mississippi, and its by-product; the tracing of Mound Bayoans to their African root. Later years, he served as a consultant to
Alameda County Hypertension Council, California, where he developed a Protocol for blood pressure screening and follow-up.
♣ In New York, Stephen served as the Director of Metropolitan Youth Camp in East Harlem where he introduced innovative,
cognitive and mentorship program for the African American and Latino youths. Still on the human frontiers, he with others
pioneered the Harlem Tutorial Program under the auspices of the New York International House. He is very active in the
community of New York, served on many boards and committees, some of which were; as former President of West Farms
Haven Homeowners Association, Bronx, former Chairperson of: Health and Human Services Committee of NYC Voluntary
Organization [Emergencies Preparedness],former Chair of Health & Human Services Committee of Community Planning
Board 11-East Harlem, Chair of Metropolitan Hospital Community Board and it Geriatric Committee, former Chair of CCNY
United Nations & Global Concerns Committee and co-founder of the New York [Tri-States] Local Agenda 21 Coordinating
Council. He is all-round true advocate for justice, community empowerment and advancement of humanity. Stephen has
developed and presented scores of public testimonies, scientific papers and organized conferences. He serves as reviewer of
scientific articles for professional journals, such as American Journal of Public Health.
♣ Stephen Adeyinka devoted years of continuous commitment and dedication to services, advocating for the improvement of
the over-all wellbeing of the communities locally, nationally and around the globe. He is the recipient of a Royal proclamation,
local and international awards.
