Learning Outcomes
1. Define protocol and list all the main
types of network protocol.
2. Core protocols of TCP/IP
What is PROTOCOL?
 Define the set of rules that govern the
communications between two computers
connected to the network.
 Roles: addressing and routing of messages,
error detection and recovery, sequence and
flow controls.
 Terminologies: In order for two computers to
talk to each other, they must be speaking the
same language
Main types of network protocols
• TCP/IP (for UNIX, Windows NT, Windows 95 and
other platforms) – common network protocol for
communication.
• IPX/SPX(Internetwork Packet Exchange/Sequenced
Packet Exchange) – Network Games
• AppleTalk (for Macintosh computers) – communication
protocol among Macintosh computer only.
• NetBIOS/NetBEUI (for LAN Manager and Windows
NT networks) – Network Basic Input Output System.
TCP/IP
• TCP/IP is the communication protocol for
communication between computers on the
Internet.
• TCP/IP = Transmission Control Protocol
/ Internet Protocol.
• TCP/IP defines how electronic devices (like
computers) should be connected to the Internet,
and how data should be transmitted between
them.
TCP/IP Model
TCP/IP Model (cont…)
Notes: Transport Layer may have one of two names.
1. TCP protocol is being used, it is called a Segment
2. UDP protocol is being used, it is called a Datagram
Core protocols of TCP/IP
• TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) communication
between applications - delivery ensured.
• UDP (User Datagram Protocol) simple communication
between applications - delivery not sure.
• is a communications protocol that offers a limited
amount of service when messages are exchanged
between computers in a network that uses the Internet
Protocol (IP).
• IP (Internet Protocol) communication between
computers
• ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) for errors
and statistics
• ARP(Address Resolution Protocol) for resolution of
network layer addresses into link layer addresses
(searching within multiple addresses)
I don’t stop when I’m tired.
I only stop when I’m done…
