Dr Pauline Paterson's (Research Fellow and co-director of The Vaccine Confidence Project, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine) presentation at the CILIP 2017 Conference in Manchester #CILIPConf17 Whilst most people vaccinate, some groups or individuals delay or refuse vaccines due to concerns about safety, whether real or perceived, and concerns about information (including mis-information or mis-trust in information). Public concerns about vaccines have occurred around the world, spreading quickly and sometimes leading to vaccine refusals and disease outbreaks. The presentation will explore case studies on non-vaccination of measles containing vaccine (MCV) and concerns around HPV vaccine globally. This talk will attempt to address the question of how misinformation can undermine public health, exploring selective exposure, selective perception and the issue of multiple realities.

What can be done to address vaccine hesitancy?  Identify regions with low vaccination coverage  Measure and investigate reasons for vaccine hesitancy and vaccination refusal  Address underlying issues
Identify regions with low vaccination coverage  Ukraine, where polio re-occurred for the first time in 20 years, had a polio vaccination coverage of 15%  Before Nigeria boycott, Kano state was region with lowest DTP coverage  However, sometimes delays in getting coverage data… and may be other reasons for non-vaccination e.g. access issues

TIP is a diagnostics tool offering a process to understand drivers and barriers with a view to defining evidence-based interventions for behaviour change. What is ‘Tailoring Immunisation Programmes’ (TIP)? TIP can help national immunisation programmes: • Identify susceptible population groups • Diagnose drivers and barriers to immunisation. • Design evidence-based interventions to tailor services to the needs of the group. Review on vaccine hesitancy and healthcare providers (HCPs): Findings • HCPs remain the most trusted advisor and influencer of vaccination decisions • The capacity and confidence of HCPs are stretched o Time constraints and increased workload o Limited resources and often have inadequate information or training support to address parents’ questions. • HCPs need more support Paterson et al.
