The Longest Sled Dog Race in the World: An OverviewJay Butan DVM
Jay Butan, DVM, has owned and operated Lake Worth, Florida’s Canal Animal Hospital since 1989. Community involved and civic minded, Jay Butan, DVM, shares his skills as a veterinarian in a number of additional ways. For example, in addition to participating in Palm Beach County’s pre adoption “Spay-a-Thons”, for over two decades he has spent significant amounts of time at personal expense to volunteer as a trail vet for Alaska’s annual Iditarod sled dog race.
The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race began in 1973 and today stands as the best-known sled dog race in the world. However, at 938 miles, or 1,510 kilometers, the Iditarod is not the longest sled dog race in the world.
The longest sled dog race ever recorded was the Beringia-92. The course followed a more than 2,000 kilometer track, or about 1,270 miles, between Esso and Markovo in eastern Russia. Raced in 1992, this edition of the Berginia was won by Vladimir Radivilov and his team, who crossed the finish line after 201 hours, or just under eight and a half days. The Beringia is run annually, but the length and direction of the course varies from year to year, and it has yet to surpass the 1992 edition in terms of total distance.
By comparison, Dallas Seavey set the Iditarod course record in 2021. He completed the race in seven days, 14 hours, eight minutes, and 57 seconds.
A Few Factors to Consider When Choosing a Veterinary HospitalJay Butan DVM
Jay Butan, DVM, studied at Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts. Since 1989, Jay Butan, DVM, has owned and practiced at the Canal Animal Hospital in Lake Worth, Florida.
Choosing a veterinary hospital has many implications for pets and pet owners. Pet owners benefit from having confidence in both the doctor AND the staff since that confidence can deliver peace of mind. To find the right hospital, consider several important factors.
First, look for a combination of passion, dedication, and experience in the hospital’s veterinarians and staff. Ask about the team's education and training in animal health and well-being. In addition, find out if the veterinarians pursue continuing education.
Next, confirm the range of services provided at the pet hospital. Specifics to check might include vaccinations, surgical procedures, dental care, and routine check-ups as well as in house labs and radiology. Remember to inquire if the hospital offers emergency care.
Third, consider touring the hospital. Seeing the facilities in person can help pet owners make their decisions. Ask for a tour so you can see if you get the feeling of care you want for your fur baby.
Lastly, ask if the practice is privately or corporate owned. You really don't want "cookie cutter" care where protocols are determined by non veterinary personnel who are mostly looking out for the bottom line - profits. Let's be honest - good medicine costs money - there are no shortcuts to quality veterinary care. You want people who will listen to YOUR concerns, have empathy and be able and willing to offer you the best of care but also options. Canal Animal Hospital is that kind of place to feel at home.

When it comes to the well-being of your pets, choosing the right veterinary hospital is a crucial decision. Like selecting your own healthcare provider, choosing a veterinary hospital requires careful consideration. Location, services, equipment, hours and kind service are all important factors.
One consideration could be the location of the animal hospital. A nearby hospital can make all the difference during an emergency. Emergencies can happen at any time. Inquire about the hospital's emergency care services, including after-hours availability - or accessibility to a nearby 24/7 emergency or specialty facility. Also, consider the facility's operating hours, which should align with your schedule for convenience. If there is an emergency during regular hours can they still accommodate you or refer you to a place nearby that may , in fact, be a better option.
Reading online reviews and seeking recommendations from friends or family who have used the services of the animal hospital can provide valuable insights into the hospital's reputation. Positive feedback and recommendations are good indicators of quality animal care. However, so many "reviews" are "planted" so that even negative reviews are also helpful. So many people these days feel free to anonymously post negative reviews but you can usually tell if someone is just out to "grind an ax", pass blame off onto others or if they have a legitimate complaint. Many negative reviews are easy to tell if they are disingenuous. A veterinary hospital with great communication skills and compassion tend to avoid these pitfalls because they put the pet's health and the value of their client's relationships above all else.
Inquire about fees for routine check-ups, vaccinations, and other services. Additionally, check if they offer payment plans, pet insurance, and the payment methods they accept.
A good animal hospital should provide medical care and show genuine compassion for your pets. Communication is also crucial. They should be able to explain medical issues clearly and be receptive to your concerns - even your Google searches deserve to be validated. Doing all this can help you ascertain that the hospital's veterinarians are licensed, experienced, and well-qualified to care for your pets.
Lastly, ask the veterinary hospital personnel if it is privately owned or corporate. A privately owned hospital is more likely to have a consistent veterinary and support staff that are committed to the long term relationship with you and your pet. A common complaint of corporate practices is that they tend to always have new staff members and that they seem more concerned about the money. Let's be honest - it costs money to run an animal hospital and retain great staff. You should get the feeling that the staff knows who you are and that your pet's care is worth the value of what you spend there.
The Origin of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog RaceJay Butan DVM
The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2023. The nearly 1,000-mile race from Anchorage to Nome, Alaska was conceived to preserve the tradition of husky sledding and honor those who traveled the historic Iditarod Trail. It commemorates a 1925 relay by 20 dog sled teams that delivered diphtheria antiserum to Nome in just over 5 days, saving the isolated community from an outbreak when other means of transport failed due to harsh winter conditions.
Jay Butan is a veterinarian who operated an animal hospital in Florida and served as veterinary staff for the Iditarod sled dog race between 2002 and 2016. Alaskan Huskies, a blend of dog breeds bred over time for their strength, speed, and ability to withstand cold temperatures, are commonly used for sled dog racing. These dogs must be adapted to keeping warm in harsh, cold conditions and have tough paws suited to running on rough terrain. All sled dogs undergo medical exams before racing to ensure they can physically handle the demands of the race.
Jay Butan, DVM, has owned and operated the Canal Animal Hospital in Lake Worth, Florida, since 1989. In addition to providing the Lake Worth community with caring, compassionate veterinary services, Jay Butan, DVM, has spent 10 years as a trail veterinarian for the Iditarod.
As a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Jay Butan, DVM understands the many challenges of traveling with a pet. Sensitive to the many concerns pet owners face in unfamiliar travel situations, Dr. Butan suggests a number of tips that can take the stress out of pet travel, making your departure, arrival, and everything in between a little more relaxing and a lot less complicated.

Tips to Safeguard the Oral Health of Your DogJay Butan DVM
This document provides tips for safeguarding a dog's oral health. It recommends brushing a dog's teeth daily or at least three times a week using veterinarian-approved toothpaste. If brushing is not possible, dental snacks, treats, and chews can help reduce plaque buildup. It also advises taking dogs to the vet for regular dental cleanings, which some breeds may need yearly or every two years depending on their risk of oral health issues. The goal is to prioritize dental hygiene through brushing and cleanings to prevent problems like kidney and heart disease caused by untreated oral issues.
In cats, feline miliary dermatitis is a skin condition that is often caused by an allergic reaction. It is characterized by a red, crusty rash on the back, head, or neck, along with intense itching.
Gene Therapy for Dogs May Also Help HumansJay Butan DVM

To prepare for his career as a vet, Jay Butan, DVM graduated as an undergraduate from Cornell University where he was a member of the honor society and graduated with distinction and then from The Cumming's School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University.
Scientists at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University believe their success in administering gene therapy to mice and dogs may have implications for humans with many different conditions including heart disease. The scientists have used gene therapy to effectively stop leaky heart valves in mice, and are currently testing the therapy on Cavalier King Charles spaniels that have mitral valve disease. The therapy essentially consists of injecting DNA to promote protein growth in cells to ultimately stop leakage in heart valves.
The scientists are hopeful that the new therapy will also work for humans, in part, because many dog diseases have proven to be similar to human disease. Further, the therapy may effectively treat problems beyond heart disease.
An electronic microchip the size of a grain of rice, implanted under the skin by a veterinarian, can be used to identify lost pets and reunite them with their owners. When scanned, the microchip provides the pet's identification number, which is registered with the owner's contact details. A study found microchipped dogs were over twice as likely to be returned to their owner than non-microchipped dogs, and microchipped cats were over 20 times more likely to be reunited with their owners. The microchipping procedure is a simple injection that does not require anesthesia.

Veterinary approaches to pain management in animals have changed over the past few decades from believing pain was necessary for healing to treating animals until certain they are no longer in pain, as animals cannot verbalize their pain. Veterinarians have several options to treat animal pain, including NSAIDs, analgesic gels, and when drugs and massage are insufficient, alternative therapies like acupuncture. Careful monitoring of an animal's behavior is important to determine if it is experiencing pain.

3. The 2024 Iditarod will take place from March 2 to March 17, beginning at its traditional
