This document discusses rock slope failures and kinematic analysis. It provides examples of different types of slope failures including planar, wedge, and toppling failures. The key cause of these failures is movement along discontinuities in the rock mass such as bedding planes, faults, and shear zones. Kinematic analysis uses stereonet plots of discontinuity orientations to determine if slopes are prone to planar, wedge, or toppling failures based on the orientation criteria for each failure type. Field measurements of discontinuity data from outcrops can be input to identify potential failure planes.
This document summarizes the stratigraphy of the Cretaceous sediments in the Trichinopoly district of Tamil Nadu, India. It divides the sediments into four groups from oldest to youngest: Uttatur Group, Trichinopoly Group, Ariyalur Group, and Niniyur Formation. Each group contains multiple formations characterized by their lithology, thickness, fossil content, and age. The sediments were deposited in marine environments from the Aptian to early Paleocene stages and include limestones, sandstones, shales, and shell beds. Fossils found include ammonites, bivalves, wood, and dinosaur remains, providing insights into the paleoenvironment and basin evolution.
The document describes eight common igneous rock structures: vesicular, amygdaloidal, block lava, ropy lava, pillow lava, jointing and sheet structure, columnar structure, pegmatites, spherulitic, and orbicular. It was authored by Md. Yousuf Gazi, a lecturer in the Department of Geology at the University of Dhaka.

The document discusses sedimentary facies analysis and the concepts of facies, facies associations, and sedimentary processes. It defines a facies as the physical features of a sedimentary deposit that can be used to distinguish it from adjacent deposits. Facies associations are genetically related groups of facies that record particular depositional environments. Sedimentary processes include selective processes that transport and structure sediments, as well as mass processes involving large sediment movements like debris flows, grain flows, mud flows, and turbidity flows.
Mid-ocean ridges are underwater mountain systems formed at divergent tectonic plate boundaries where new oceanic crust is generated. They consist of a chain of mountains linked by a central rift valley and result from mantle upwelling and melting in response to plate spreading. As the buoyant magma rises to the seafloor at the plate boundary, it emerges as lava to form new ocean crust upon cooling.

Mantle melting occurs when heat and pressure cause partial melting of the mantle, producing basaltic magma. Basalt is the most common volcanic rock on Earth and can be further differentiated to form other igneous rock types. Evidence for the composition and processes of the mantle comes from ophiolites, dredged samples from ocean floors, nodules contained in basalts, and xenoliths brought up from deep in the mantle via kimberlite eruptions. Together this evidence indicates that the upper mantle is composed predominantly of the minerals olivine, orthopyroxene, and clinopyroxene which make up the rocks dunite, harzburgite, and lherzol
This document discusses sedimentary basin formation processes and basin margin concepts. It describes how tectonism controls the creation and destruction of sedimentary basins through subsidence. The two main mechanisms for tectonic subsidence are extension and flexural loading. Extensional basins form in rift settings and experience rapid initial subsidence that decreases over time. Compressional basins, also called foreland basins, form in response to lithospheric bending under thrust belts. Strike-slip basins have irregular subsidence patterns. Basin margins include shelf-break, ramp, rift, and growth-fault margins, which influence depositional responses to sea level changes.
This document provides an overview of key concepts related to cleavage, foliation, and lineation in metamorphic rocks. It defines different types of cleavage based on scale, including slaty, phyllitic, and schistosity. It also discusses crenulation and spaced cleavage. Examples are provided of slate, phyllite, schistosity, and crenulation cleavage in metamorphic rocks. The document also discusses concepts such as boudinage, gneissic structure, migmatization, mylonite, and different types of lineations. It provides examples of strain markers and describes analyzing strain in strongly deformed rocks. Finally, it discusses relationships between deformation, metamorphism, pl
Most evaporites are derived from bodies of Sea-water, but under special conditions, Inland lakes may also give rise to evaporite deposits, particularly in regions of low rainfall and high temperature.
Evaporite deposits are excellent indicators of paleoclimate (need a hot and arid climate for major evaporite deposits to form)
The document discusses the main factors that contribute to landslides: slope, precipitation, vegetation, and soil type. It then describes different types of landslides and provides videos showing landslides. The continental crust covers nearly a third of the Earth’s surface, extends vertically from the Earth’s surface to the Moho discontinuity.
It is less dense than oceanic crust.
Compositionally is dominating by silicate elements
Models for the differentiation of the continental crust shows when and how it was formed
Reconciling the sedimentary and igneous records indicates that it may take up to one billion years for a new crust to dominate the sedimentary record.
The continental crust of the Earth differs from the crust of other planets in the Solar System
Its formation modified the composition of the mantle and the atmosphere
It supports life
And it remains a sink for CO2
Evaluating the composition of new continental crust can provide important clues as to how and when it may have been generated. Which is required understanding the differentiation processes of igneous (granites) and sedimentary rocks
There are two main forms of igneous rocks:
1) Extrusive rocks form from lava erupted at the Earth's surface and cool rapidly. They include lava flows, pyroclastic deposits like volcanic ash and tuff.
2) Intrusive rocks form from magma that cools below the surface. They can be concordant, forming sheets and domes parallel to layers, like sills and laccoliths, or discordant and cutting across layers, like dikes, batholiths, and volcanic necks.
1) Major earthquakes are more common near convergent plate boundaries and in certain areas like South America and the Philippines.
2) Approximately 47% of major earthquakes occur within 100 miles of plate boundaries and 71% occur within 200 miles.
3) Areas at risk for future major earthquakes include the Philippines, Pacific Northwest, South America, New Zealand, Japan, Indonesia, Alaska, the Mediterranean, Burma, and the Lesser Antilles due to factors like their proximity to plate boundaries and lack of recent seismic activity.
Unconformities represent gaps or missing time in the geologic record due to non-deposition or erosion. There are several types of unconformities that can form, such as angular unconformities, disconformities, and nonconformities. Unconformities are important as they provide information about periods of geologic activity, like folding or erosion of the land, and help place boundaries on geologic timescales. They can be identified in the field based on features like a lack of parallel bedding above and below the contact, presence of erosion surfaces, and fossils of widely different ages across the boundary.
Potential source rocks in Pakistan range in age from Cambrian to Eocene and are distributed across four basins. In the Upper Indus Basin, the primary source rock is the Paleocene Patala Formation. In the Middle and Lower Indus Basins, the important source rock is the Early Cretaceous Sembar Formation shales. Within these basins, the Kirthar and Sulaiman Fold Belts also contain source rocks like the Ranikot and Goru Formations. In the Baluchistan Basin, the Rakhshani Formation and Kharan Limestone from the Paleocene to Eocene are source rocks. Finally, in the Pishin Basin, source facies include dark gray
Continental rifts are regions of extensional deformation where the entire thickness of the lithosphere has deformed under the influence of deviatoric tension.
Rifts represent the initial stage of continental break-up where extension may lead to lithospheric rupture and the formation of a new ocean basin.
This document discusses the Precambrian geology of the Southern Granulite Terrain of India. It describes the terrain as being composed of several blocks separated by shear zones, which experienced high-grade metamorphism and multiple periods of folding and faulting. The metamorphic history involved ultra-high temperature conditions in some areas, as evidenced by mineral assemblages. The document also outlines two competing tectonic models to explain the evolution of the related Pandyan Mobile Belt: a subduction-collision model and an accretion model.
This document provides an overview of geophysics and its various applications. It discusses how geophysics studies the physics of the Earth and its atmosphere. Key methods described include seismic reflection and refraction techniques to map subsurface structures. These methods make use of the travel times of seismic waves to determine depths and detect features like faults and folds. The document also outlines how geophysics has various applications in mineral and oil/gas exploration to locate deposits and structures below the surface using physical property measurements.
The document discusses the four main types of mountains: folded mountains formed by continental collisions, fault-block mountains formed by dropping rock blocks, volcanic mountains formed by molten rock erupting, and dome mountains formed when molten rock pushes up rock layers. Plateaus are also discussed as being large uplifted areas of flat rock formed slowly over time. The Sierra Nevada mountain range in California was formed when thick horizontal rock layers were slowly lifted up.
Sedimentary rocks form through the accumulation and lithification of sediments. Sediments are produced through the weathering and erosion of existing rocks. Once transported, sediments are deposited in layers and compacted over time into sedimentary rock. Sedimentary rocks can be classified based on their composition (e.g. siliciclastic rocks like sandstone form from clastic particles) and texture (e.g. grain size, sorting, rounding influence the rock type). Sedimentary structures provide clues about the depositional environment.
This document summarizes common shoreline facies and depositional environments found in beach and barrier island systems. It describes the different sedimentary structures and deposits that form in offshore, transition zone, shoreface, foreshore, and backshore areas due to varying water depths and wave/current energy levels. These include laminated mud, hummocky cross-bedded sand, trough cross-bedded sand, horizontally-stratified sand, shell beds, edgewise conglomerate, thrombolites, and others. It also discusses large-scale progradational and retrogradational profiles as well as features of barrier islands, tidal inlets, washover fans, and back-barrier environments.
This document discusses different types of faults that occur due to brittle deformation of the Earth's crust. It describes normal faults which form rift valleys, reverse/thrust faults where older rocks are thrust over younger rocks, and strike-slip faults where the rock on one side of the fault moves horizontally past the other side in a left or right lateral motion. Examples given include the East African Rift valley formed by normal faults, reverse faults in Japan and thrust faults in Scotland.
Distribution, stratigraphy and economic importance of cuddapah parag sonwane
The document summarizes the distribution, stratigraphy, and economic importance of the Cuddapah Supergroup in India. It discusses that the Cuddapah Supergroup is an important Proterozoic sedimentary basin located in southern India. The stratigraphy includes lower volcanic rocks and upper non-volcanic rocks separated by an unconformity. It is divided into various formations composed of quartzites, shales, limestones, and other rock types. Though fossils are rare, the basin contains important mineral resources like uranium, barytes, diamonds, and asbestos. The Cuddapah Supergroup provides insights into the geology of India during the Proterozoic Eon.

Love L - Wave
