Learning Management
System (LMS)
There are literally hundreds of Learning
Management System (LMS) platforms on the
market that range in both quality and price
considerably. This makes finding the right one
for your organisation incredibly important and
sometimes tricky.
The cheapest option here is to go for an open
source platform such as Moodle, Totara or Kineo.
These are widely used in the public sector as basic
LMS platforms.
The main drawback to these platforms is that they
are an open source option and as such require a
great deal of programming and forming to get them
into a usable state with the correct layout, content,
reporting and navigation. This is a costly exercise and
will require constant maintenance and upkeep.
The most expensive option is to buy an LMS ‘out
of the box’. This means that the business will hold
the value in the business for the product, however,
will have to again maintain this platform internally.
This route is not a cheap one to tread, as some LMS
platforms have taken over £2m to develop!
The third option, is to partner with a business
partner like Peritus that can provide you with an LMS
platform that can be tailored to your needs. This way
you can purchase the power and professionalism
of the ‘off the shelf’ option while only paying for a
fraction of the cost of the platform and receiving

23. Steven has years of experience in the design and
delivery of high level learning and development
programmes within the commercial and financial
services sectors. While in the financial services
sector Steven was regarded as one of the leading
management development consultants within the UK,
offering mentoring and training to senior managers
in various business sectors. Steven has been involved
in many LEAN and solution based training events
aimed at improving the people and processes to drive
institutional change and growth opportunities.
Peter is a member of the Chartered Institute of
Management Accountants, and has extensive financial
and taxation experience. Peter has worked in senior
positions at a number of large corporates including
Yorkshire Bank, Marks and Spencer, GAP and Coventry
Building Society, as well as many years experience
working with and advising small businesses. In addition
to taxation and accountancy advice, Peter’s specialist
areas include new business start ups, financing, cash
flow forecasting, FX and bookkeeping.
Michelle’s career started in the legal industry where
she trained to be a solicitor before realising her love
and passion for learning and development. She has
