Training: An interesting dichotomy is where people do not expect to pay for training when investigating a project but will pay when the project is part of their business. MOOC.org pricing is interesting. It’s free if you just want to learn, if you want the training recognized, then there’s a fee. This enables people to investigate for free, and then if they require support, the training needs to be verified. This avoids training through support. Open Source telecom software is part of a suite of open source projects used. Perhaps we should investigate dominant architectures? Companies that use open source make a long-term commitment to building an organization that understands open source, and is committed to owning the product, its roadmap, and the customer experience. Companies successful with open source do not happen overnight, they are built over years. State of the Union: ConvTech, From Communications to Conversations Alan Quayle Programmable telecoms has created new markets with $100B+ in annual revenues. While significantly lowering service costs, improving the operations of many businesses, and simply making life better for most people in the world. This value creation was not possible within legacy ecosystems, rather without. The term FinTech, once called Digital Banking (and Finance and Insurance), has gripped the broader business community. While we continue to sing to the choir in Programmable Telecoms. We must find a compelling rallying cry, as what we’re doing is important and changing the world. We are a diverse group of people from around the world redefining telecoms using modern technologies (APIs, open source, web3, webRTC, cloud) for new and old service providers, and the end consumers/enterprises. Terms like CPaaS, Cloud Communications, Programmable Telecoms, UCaaS, WebRTC, CCaaS, telecom APIs, while meaningful inside the industry, have not inspired the broader business community (VCs, start-ups, investors, press). We’re proposing using a simple term: ConvTech, short for Conversation Technology. Recognizing the move from communications to conversations between people and things. A conversation is an exchange of information between two parties (humans or machines). ConvTech covers UCaaS, CPaaS, CCaaS, telecom APIs, chat and chatbots, video communications, conferencing, workflow, etc. ConvTech is causing the disruption of the $250B enterprise telecoms market, moving it mostly to the cloud and internet. We're going to review the landscape, market sizes, and state of play across this broad and relatively unrecognized category and some of the adjacent categories that for simplicity we group under the category of ConvTech.

INOVO is making this a commercial reality for its customers in Romania and beyond. It’s a great example of the migration from hack to business, and the power of the democratization in telecoms enabling people to create solutions for their customers that fit their specific local needs. The Cloud Control Access System opens doors with cards, codes, phones, and SMS. The prototype starts with physical door controllers (the first release is Arduino-based), then migrates to intermediate building proxies that hold the customers’ database in case the internet goes down (a reality most businesses face several times a year) and them migrating to a scalable cloud authentication and portal layer.

We believe this multi sided marketplace approach is the next step for the telecom industry as well. WGTWO has created a programmable mobile core network, built as a platform, API’ed and delivered as-a-service, along with marketplaces where operators, developers and end-users interact. This enables 3rd party developers to create great products that people love – helping operators to start using and redistributing these products – and allowing subscribers to find, add, and manage extra products on top of their price plans.Making this a reality is not straightforward. Let us share our journey, where we started – where we are right now – and the direction we are heading.

Open Source Telecom Project Survey Results and Analysis

Alan Quayle, Independent. We ran a survey in May/June/July 2019 to gather people’s experiences and opinions on using Open Source Telecom Software Projects. I’m often asked to comment on the different open source projects, typical implementation architectures, and answer the usual worries on availability, performance, and what-ifs. This is an attempt to provide something more authoritative than my opinions based on who I last talked to. My role here is simply as someone who has working in and promoted programmable telecoms (CXTech) for the past 2+ decades, to help us all be more successful. Most of CXTech (potentially a $1.2T industry) runs on just a few open source telecom software projects, that are run by a few people, supported by a much larger community of supporters. It’s like the global food and beverage industry (a $5T market, only 4 times the size of CXTech) was supplied out of the kitchens of a few tens of homes! A contrived analogy to highlight the immense reach made possible by open source software. But it does highlight the global significance of open source telecom software, and the importance of this survey in helping us share experiences and opinions.

Mutation Testing for Task-Oriented Chatbots

Conversational agents, or chatbots, are increasingly used to access all sorts of services using natural language. While open-domain chatbots - like ChatGPT - can converse on any topic, task-oriented chatbots - the focus of this paper - are designed for specific tasks, like booking a flight, obtaining customer support, or setting an appointment. Like any other software, task-oriented chatbots need to be properly tested, usually by defining and executing test scenarios (i.e., sequences of user-chatbot interactions). However, there is currently a lack of methods to quantify the completeness and strength of such test scenarios, which can lead to low-quality tests, and hence to buggy chatbots. To fill this gap, we propose adapting mutation testing (MuT) for task-oriented chatbots. To this end, we introduce a set of mutation operators that emulate faults in chatbot designs, an architecture that enables MuT on chatbots built using heterogeneous technologies, and a practical realisation as an Eclipse plugin. Moreover, we evaluate the applicability, effectiveness and efficiency of our approach on open-source chatbots, with promising results.

By moving the state to an external datastore the stateful streams app (from a deployment point of view) effectively becomes stateless.
