6 WAYS
TO
SAVE
Saving always comes first. Think of it as the founda on upon
which your financial house is built. The reason is straigh orward
unless you inherit a large amount of money, it is your savings
that will provide you with the resources to feed your invest
ments. The best way to start saving is by segrega ng your
money according to your needs and desires. There is nothing
wrong with li le luxuries, and you should be able to enjoy many
of the nonessen al things you have. But it is important to realize
that desires are not needs.
Underneath are some economically virtuous habits which you
can prac ce in your everyday life as they might lend a helping
hand in saving up your hard earned money.
Start saving with itsy bitsy amount
Majority of financial experts believe that we
need to save at least 5 percent, and if possi
ble 10 percent, of our income and place it in
an interest bearing, liquid savings account.
Once saving becomes a habit, set your saving
goals and maintain savings account of at least three to six
months' income. This will prevent you from borrowing money
from your friends or rela ves when sudden expenses occur.
Cuddle Compound Interest
The earlier you commence to plant
money into your re rement sav
ings, the more you'll have. Mainly
people think that it’s a ma er of
working hard which eventually
leads you to a lot of money, but actually the true path to wealth
simply starts from saving and inves ng from an early age. How
ever compound interest is beneficial merely if you are the one
receiving the interest, if you are the one paying compound in
terest on a loan or credit card, then it's cos ng you a lot of
money, as interest is charged on interest.
Pay debts as soon as possible
If you carry any debt, focus on consolida ng it to a lower inter
est as it would let you pay down the
balance faster without increasing your
payments, and pay it off as soon as
possible. The longer you’ll take to
repay the charges, the more interest
they’ll make, and you’ll be le with
lesser cash in your pocket. Money paid in interest is money
thrown away and there is absolutely no need to chuck way your
hard earned cash.
Examine your ATM withdrawals
Monitor how much withdrawals you make
per week or per month and restrict it to
one me. As from now savings bank ac
count holders are allowed only five free
transac ons from ATMs of other banks
which include cash withdrawal, balance en
quiry and changing your secret iden fica
on number. Previously, merely cash withdrawals were counted
for the purpose of five free transac ons and any number of non
cash transac ons such as balance enquiry was free. So now you
need to restrain yourself from visi ng the ATM frequently. In ad
di on a empt to reduce the amount withdrawn every me.
Introduce yourself to online shopping
If you can purchase from the comfort of your home without
struggling in the crowd and with no ex
penditure on transporta on, then why
not opt for this convenient way to
shop? Many retailers encourage cus
tomers to shop online with cap va ng
discounts and special offers including
free shipping. These websites even
tempt buyers with coupon codes and cash back guarantees
which just act as icing on the cake for the purchaser.
Disburse less on entertainment
If you wish to expend less for a movie try hi ng for morning
shows or ma nee showings, which can
some mes cost half the price of an
evening show. Alongside keep your eye
out for free advanced screening of films
because many movie studios offer these
before the official release of the movie. By
this you’ll not only get to see the movie
for free, but you’ll also get to see it before
most of your friends. For further savings you can borrow best
seller books and new released movies from libraries, friends or
from rental shops rather than buying them.

7. PROMOTING LIVELIHOOD:
ENABLING THROUGH CHARITY
FACT: Less than 10 percent of rural workers in India are employed on a regular basis. Poor rural households engage in
more than one ac vity for their livelihoods.
Livelihood as perceived by EPA is a set of
economic ac vi es, involving self em
ployment and/or wage employment by
using one’s endowments (human and
material) to generate adequate resources
(cash and non cash) for mee ng the re
quirements of self and the household,
usually carried out repeatedly and as
such become a way of life. Ideally, a liveli
hood should keep a person meaningfully
occupied, in a sustainable manner, with
dignity. Livelihoods, therefore, go far be
yond genera ng income.
A livelihood is much
more than employment.
In the current decade, ac
cording to es mates of
the Planning Commission
for the Tenth Five Year
Plan, more than 10 mil
lion people in India will
be seeking work every
year. Thus, to ensure full
employment within a
decade, more than 10
million new livelihoods
will have to be generated
every year. Given the
magnitude of the prob
lem, and the dearth of re
sources for livelihood
promo on, the task of
promo ng livelihoods for
the poor becomes all the more urgent. It
calls for organiza ons to use their re
sources op mally to achieve maximum
scale.
The primary reason to promote liveli
hoods is the belief in the essen al right
of all human beings to equal opportunity.
Poor people do not have life choices nor
do they have opportuni es. Ensuring that
a poor household has a stable livelihood
will substan ally increase its income, and
over a period of me, asset ownership,
self esteem and social par cipa on.
The second reason for livelihood promo
on is to promote economic growth.
Nearly 4 billion out of the 6 billion people
in the world, which do not have the pur
chasing power to buy even the bare ne
cessi es of life – food, clothing and
shelter. But as they get steadier incomes
●Sectoral Approach: Promo ng livelihoods
along a sector of the economy such as agri
culture, or a sub sector such as co on. For
example: Sub sector Interven ons, such as
dairy, fishery, and sericulture, usually cov
ering the value chain from primary produc
on to the ul mate consumer, e.g. NDDB in
dairy.
For suppor ng livelihoods, EPA believes
that services are required in input supply,
output marke ng, infrastructure, technol
ogy development, re
search, training,
community organiza
on among others. In
today’s economy one
agency can not de
velop the competency
of providing all of
them. Thus, an input
supply company needs
to collaborate with an
output marke ng
company, which in
turn needs to collabo
rate with a credit
provider, and build a
collabora ve polygon.
On similar lines, a
youth employment ini
a ve for skill devel
opment and livelihood
promo on was taken by Saksham. Sak
sham, which is a subsidiary of EPA infra
structure is a Plan Ini a ve to support
youth, especially young girls from disadvan
taged families/communi es in India to be
able to realize their dreams by equipping
them with essen al life and voca onal
skills, which not only helps them to access
decent employment Decent Work (as def by
ILO) but also makes them representa ves of
a gender just society.
through livelihood promo on, they be
come customers of many goods and serv
ices, which then promote growth. The third
reason for promo ng livelihoods is to en
sure social and poli cal stability. When
people are hungry, they tend to take to vi
olence, crime. Thus, we see that there are
idealis c, u litarian and plain self interest
based arguments for livelihood promo on
Livelihood interven ons can be in many
forms and go far beyond running an in
come genera on program. Some of the ap
proaches of livelihood interven ons in
India are:
●Spa al Approach: Promo ng livelihoods
in a specified geographical area, such as a
region, sub region, command area or a wa
tershed. For example: Interven on in a
cluster of enterprises, such as Ludhiana for
hosiery, Badohi Mirzapur for carpets,
Kancheepuram in Tamil Nadu and Su
alkuchi in Assam for silk sarees, and so on.
●Segmental Approach: Promo ng liveli
hoods for a vulnerable segment of the pop
ula on, such as landless households,
tribals, women and the disabled. For exam
ple: Inves ng in human development nu
tri on, health, educa on, and ins tu onal
development (for example CARE’s
Women’s Income and Self Help project,
Jharkhand)
