The document describes stable isotope data from algal samples collected from Wash Cresc Lake. It includes a table with sample identifiers, weights, carbon and nitrogen composition percentages, delta C-13 and delta N-15 values, and calibration corrections for delta values. The table contains stable isotope measurements for 23 algal samples. Additional context is provided by notes that it is stable isotope data from algal samples collected on December 16th and references are given for the standard deviations of delta values.
Archiving the Immediate: How and Why Archives Should Approach Social MediaAxel Bruns
This document discusses how and why archives should approach archiving social media. It argues that social media, like Twitter, provides a first draft of present events from unfiltered first-hand accounts, and captures Australians' views on specific events and long-term trends. However, this rich data is easily lost if not archived. It proposes that archives could partner with Twitter to receive a full feed of tweets from Australia, and process and store the raw datasets in standard formats while developing ethical protocols for usage. Analyzing these archives could provide insights into the formation and interaction of online publics and networks in the Australian public sphere.
The document discusses the concept of Science 2.0, which involves greater openness, sharing, and collaboration in scientific research. Key aspects of Science 2.0 include citizen science projects that engage volunteers without formal training, open data and tools that allow broader participation, and online communities for scientists around areas of shared interest. The emergence of new web technologies has enabled new forms of collaboration and data-driven approaches that go beyond traditional hypotheses to explore what large datasets can reveal.
October 18, 2013 @ Kennedy Library, Data Studio, Cal Poly. We hear about all things “open” these days: open access, open source, open data, open science, et cetera. But what does it really mean for how we do science? How are things changing, and what are the implications for individual researchers?

Kaitlin Thaney discusses building capacity for open science by investing in networks of open practice and communities that sustain open activity over time. Current systems create friction despite original open intentions, but shifting practices towards openness requires supporting professional development, interoperable tools, and incentives for collaboration and sharing. Mozilla aims to empower researchers through open, collaborative research on the web.
Stronger together: community initiatives in journal managementJisc
There has been a recent growth of initiatives to address common problems regarding current and long-term access to e-journal content. Jisc is at the forefront of many of these with the close participation and active input of educational institutions.
This session aims to summarise the current state of key themes with pointers to future directions of areas such as sustainability, the move towards e-only environments, and shared consortia approaches. It will provide an overview and panel discussion on developing the supporting infrastructure to meet the needs of users. The discussion will focus on how institutions, community bodies and service providers can best work together to ensure sustainable, long-term initiatives by seeking to introduce uniformity, standardisation and collaboration to an even greater extent.
The session will introduce two new Jisc-supported projects in this area, the Keepers Registry Extra and SafeNet initiatives, and discuss how these fit alongside existing Jisc services such as Knowledge Base+, UK LOCKSS Alliance, Journal Archives and JUSP (Journal Usage Statistics Portal). The panel will address how this catalogue of services contributes towards a coherent strategy in the management of e-journal content.
The document discusses shifting scientific practice towards more open, collaborative and web-enabled research. It outlines current challenges around measuring contributions beyond publications alone. It then presents several initiatives to promote open scholarship, including contributorship badges to recognize different types of scientific work, dashboards to improve software discoverability, and community events bringing together researchers. Sustaining these changes requires addressing incentives, skills development, and lowering barriers to participation.

The document discusses the weADAPT knowledge sharing platform for climate adaptation. It aims to go beyond simply sharing knowledge by integrating information intelligently from various credible sources and linking communities of practice with scientific research. The platform allows users to find other individuals and organizations working on similar issues, access and share information easily, learn from innovative methods and tools, and communicate climate change information visually. It integrates adaptation projects, data, stories and networks to facilitate collaboration and avoid duplication of efforts.
The document outlines a 23 Things program for research data management training, which releases weekly activities and has monthly webinars, and provides a calendar of events and list of coordinators for the program at UWA.
The Project TIER Dataverse: Archiving and Sharing Replicable Student Research...datascienceiqss
The document discusses Project TIER, which aims to teach students protocols for documenting their research in a way that allows for easy and exact replication of statistical results. It develops standards for student papers, theses, and independent projects. Project TIER also seeks to disseminate these methods of transparent and replicable research to other institutions. The document provides an example of the directory structure used to archive a senior thesis according to Project TIER's documentation protocol.
This document discusses the potential for developing a knowledge network by leveraging metadata from scientific endeavors. It begins by outlining some of the limitations of traditional metadata approaches. It then proposes that metadata could be structured as a graph using semantic triples to represent relationships between people, institutions, projects, and other elements. This liberalized metadata approach could help reduce complexity while providing a more comprehensive view of scientific activities and outputs. The document advocates for establishing common standards, developing tools to extract and aggregate metadata, and creating services and repositories to enable discovery, analysis, and visualization of the knowledge network. The goal is to facilitate research by providing integrated access to information on scientific data, publications, actors and their relationships.

Data Publication for UC Davis Publish or PerishCarly Strasser
Intro presentation for panel on going beyond publishing journal articles. UC Davis "Publish or Perish?" Event, 13 Feb 2014. Sorry about missing gradient on some of slides!
The document discusses repository choices for research data, including institutional and discipline-specific repositories. It notes that institutional repositories tell the story of a researcher's work, but may only include some data from a given paper, while discipline-specific repositories could include all data but are less discoverable. The document then outlines UCSF's DataShare repository, including its goals of lowering barriers to data sharing and building an engaged user community. It proposes expanding DataShare to be UC-wide under the name "UC Dash" and customizing it for each campus using the Merritt repository platform. Features and future enhancements are also listed.
This document discusses data publication and sharing. It defines key aspects of data publication as making data available, citable, and trustworthy. It provides examples of how data can be published, including as supplemental materials, in data papers, or as standalone datasets with rich metadata. The document also summarizes a survey of researchers' views on data publication, sharing, and citation. It promotes solving simple problems first, like enabling easy sharing and citable datasets, to advance data publishing and open science.
AIBS Bioinformatics Workforce Needs Workshop, Dec 2015Carly Strasser

The Research Data Alliance aims to build social and technical infrastructure for data sharing worldwide. It brings together members in Working Groups and Interest Groups to develop solutions to specific data infrastructure challenges. Recent Working Group deliverables include recommendations for dynamically citing changing datasets, a prototype metadata standards directory, and a common framework for wheat data terminology. The Data Citation Working Group focused on identifying and citing subsets of large, dynamic datasets in a machine-readable way through approaches like data versioning and timestamping.
The document discusses the potential for open science and data to disrupt traditional academic institutions by deinstitutionalizing rewards and metrics for scientific research. It argues that fully embracing open practices like data sharing, collaboration and publishing in open access venues is necessary for a more transparent and reproducible scientific process, but that many academic institutions have yet to adapt their reward systems to incentivize these activities. The talk outlines steps the scientific community can take to further this transition, such as developing community resources and standards, educating peers, and recognizing the different roles that institutions need to play to support open scholarship.
