Windows Azure In 30mins for none technical audienceEric Nelson
- The document discusses Windows Azure, a platform as a service by Microsoft that allows developers to build and host applications in the Microsoft cloud.
- It highlights that Windows Azure provides a familiar development experience using technologies like Visual Studio, SQL Azure and ASP.NET, while also supporting other languages.
- Pricing options are outlined on a pay-as-you-go model based on compute and storage usage, with volume discounts available.
The document summarizes a presentation by Forrester Research on the total economic impact of Microsoft Windows Azure. It discusses how customers leveraged Windows Azure to address challenges like long hardware procurement times. Forrester interviewed customers who reported benefits like lower development costs and the ability to scale quickly. Forrester's analysis found a composite organization could realize a 349% ROI and $1.1 million in net benefits over three years from using Windows Azure. The presentation provides recommendations on how to optimize cloud economics by reducing unused capacity, leveraging caching, and optimizing code.
This document discusses the migration to cloud computing and the opportunities for combining public and private clouds. It argues that most organizations will utilize a hybrid cloud model, using both public cloud services from providers like Microsoft Azure as well as maintaining some applications and infrastructure on private clouds. Service providers can help organizations optimize costs and IT resources by offering managed services that integrate private clouds with public cloud platforms. The document outlines several examples of how service providers could develop offerings around disaster recovery, bursting computing capacity to the public cloud, and hosting applications on Azure.

MongoDB vs ScyllaDB: Tractian’s Experience with Real-Time MLScyllaDB
Tractian, an AI-driven industrial monitoring company, recently discovered that their real-time ML environment needed to handle a tenfold increase in data throughput. In this session, JP Voltani (Head of Engineering at Tractian), details why and how they moved to ScyllaDB to scale their data pipeline for this challenge. JP compares ScyllaDB, MongoDB, and PostgreSQL, evaluating their data models, query languages, sharding and replication, and benchmark results. Conversational agents, or chatbots, are increasingly used to access all sorts of services using natural language. While open-domain chatbots - like ChatGPT - can converse on any topic, task-oriented chatbots - the focus of this paper - are designed for specific tasks, like booking a flight, obtaining customer support, or setting an appointment. Like any other software, task-oriented chatbots need to be properly tested, usually by defining and executing test scenarios (i.e., sequences of user-chatbot interactions). However, there is currently a lack of methods to quantify the completeness and strength of such test scenarios, which can lead to low-quality tests, and hence to buggy chatbots.
To fill this gap, we propose adapting mutation testing (MuT) for task-oriented chatbots. To this end, we introduce a set of mutation operators that emulate faults in chatbot designs, an architecture that enables MuT on chatbots built using heterogeneous technologies, and a practical realisation as an Eclipse plugin. Moreover, we evaluate the applicability, effectiveness and efficiency of our approach on open-source chatbots, with promising results.

Elasticity vs. State? Exploring Kafka Streams Cassandra State StoreScyllaDB
kafka-streams-cassandra-state-store' is a drop-in Kafka Streams State Store implementation that persists data to Apache Cassandra.
By moving the state to an external datastore the stateful streams app (from a deployment point of view) effectively becomes stateless. This greatly improves elasticity and allows for fluent CI/CD (rolling upgrades, security patching, pod eviction, ...).
It also can also help to reduce failure recovery and rebalancing downtimes, with demos showing sporty 100ms rebalancing downtimes for your stateful Kafka Streams application, no matter the size of the application’s state.
As a bonus accessing Cassandra State Stores via 'Interactive Queries' (e.g. exposing via REST API) is simple and efficient since there's no need for an RPC layer proxying and fanning out requests to all instances of your streams application.

Editor's Notes
Move to back of the deck
Virtualized Computation provides massive application scalability. Customers can build a combination of web and worker roles, and those roles can be automatically replicated as needed to scale the applications and computational processing power.
•Storage Services allow customers to scale to store any amount of data – in any format – for any length of time, only paying for what they use or store.
•Services Management takes place in the Fabric Controller, the core of Windows Azure Services Management. The Fabric Controller is where load balancing and application scaling take place. Additionally, the virtualized computational capabilities are performed here.
•Security and Control with storage encryption and access authentication as well as over-the-wire encryption secures your data and application. Industry certification is a core part of the Windows Azure roadmap, seeking certifications on compliance with SOX, SAS70, and others.
State-of-the-art data centers located around the would – or on your site – host your applications and data securely anywhere you desire, accessible from everywhere you allow.
