Fighting an epidemic in a poorly-connected world. What does the Ebola crisis ...Manoj Bhusal
Epidemics like Ebola cause a lot of deaths, displacements, and despair, and they aren’t desirable for sure, but, on a positive note, they also reveal the ugly face of corporate capitalism, and make it clear who genuinely cares about the world and who doesn’t.
Scott Filler: Bill Gates, pushes for Malaria extinction Scott Filler
Scott Filler shares recent news on Bill Gates new donation towards Malaria relief and other world diseases. Hopes to wipe out Malaria completely as soon as possible.
Reskilling in the age of the algorithm is a mythed opportunity where single-bottom line mandates rule the land. All jobs will be replaced via automation where organizations are continuously pressured to cut costs and increase exponential growth as their top KPIs. But when society's metrics for success move Beyond GDP to include caregiving, the teachers and other professionals currently not counted will get the salaries and support they deserve while shifting the goals for learning in the AI era from productivity to purpose.
The editorial discusses the Ebola outbreak in the United States, which has affected Texas and Los Angeles. The Center for Disease Control has released new information about their "Safe Quarantine Strategy" to isolate infected individuals. President Obama has announced safety precautions to fight the virus. The strategy aims to quarantine those without Ebola and cure those who are infected in LA. However, quarantining the entire state has been controversial and raised concerns about isolating people from the rest of the world.

This article discusses six reasons why a controlled, informed panic may be warranted regarding the Ebola outbreak. It notes that while officials claim Ebola is difficult to transmit, the current strain's transmission methods are unclear and it could potentially become airborne. It also discusses the high reproduction rate of the virus and how established transmission mechanisms like surviving on surfaces are already very robust.
The newsletter provides updates on a variety of global health and humanitarian initiatives. The document discusses Liberia after the Ebola outbreak, noting that the country remains one of the poorest in the world with an underfunded and understaffed healthcare system still recovering from the effects of the epidemic. While Liberia has been declared Ebola-free, experts believe the virus continues to circulate in West Africa without authorities' knowledge and the country risks another outbreak. The document outlines ongoing efforts to strengthen Liberia's community health system and improve surveillance to help prevent future epidemics.
This document summarizes concerns about the exploitation of fundraising for breast cancer research. It notes that while billions have been raised and donated to research, death rates from breast cancer have not significantly declined. It examines partnerships between the Susan G. Komen foundation and food companies like Yoplait and KFC whose products have been linked to higher cancer risks. While these companies partner with Komen and consumers buy their pink-ribbon branded products thinking they are helping find a cure, the companies are actually exposing more people to risk factors. It argues many partnerships have hidden "max donation" caps so companies do not donate too much, despite the promotions implying all profits will go to research. Overall it suggests more accountability is needed in breast cancer
America Reacts to Ebola Using Search and SocialPerformics

Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Facebook, donated $25 million to the Centers for Disease Control Foundation to help combat the 2014 Ebola outbreak in West Africa. The donation provided much needed funds as the outbreak was the worst in history, infecting over 8,000 people and killing more than 4,000. The money went to the CDC Foundation's Global Disaster Response Fund to address critical needs identified by CDC experts, such as equipment, training, generators, vehicles and identifying/tracing Ebola cases.

The document summarizes an event held by the Democracy House and Middlesex County Center for Empowerment on February 13th to educate about the "1 Billion Rising Revolution" campaign. The campaign aims to end violence against women through mass demonstrations on Valentine's Day each year. It began in 2012 and calls for one billion women and those who support them to rise up in protest. The event featured a PowerPoint on past events and injustices faced by women and men. Students could make Valentine's cards and refreshments were provided. The goal of the new "1 Billion Rising Revolution" campaign is to further spread knowledge about gender violence and ultimately end it through coordinated global actions.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation was founded by Bill and Melinda Gates to improve healthcare and reduce poverty worldwide. It works to help people escape poverty by finding solutions to global problems. Some examples of their efforts include recruiting scientists to find cures for diseases like Zika and Ebola, providing online education, building houses for those who cannot afford housing, and donating chickens to address hunger in rural Africa. The foundation has spent over $60 billion to boost research and improve living standards globally through its investments in healthcare facilities.

Some analysts see African self-determination and eliminating dependency on foreign aid as the best solution to the problem. Deitric Muhammad, Chief Economist at MGE19 Economic Research & Structural Models, opines that Africa must accept the challenge and do for itself.
In an opinion piece posted on ModernGhana.com Mr. Muhammad raised the point, “What will African economies do once the U.S. dollar and the euro collapse? African economies are in a very vulnerable position because of their artificial dependency on external economies including China,” he wrote.
“Those who control the resources of Africa will become the next superpower for the 21st Century.” According to Ugandan “New Vision” newspaper, Ben Turok, former anti-apartheid activist, a South Africa Parliamentarian and Chairperson of the Network of African Parliamentarians warned that no amount of aid from multinational institutions like the World Bank would redeem the continent, unless African countries exploit their own natural resources.

Here's Who's Paying To Fight Ebola -- Other Than Mark Zuckerberg
Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen announced Thursday that he would be donating at least $100 million
to fighting Ebola, The New York Times reported.
"Everybody feels called sometimes to really pursue a certain thing that resonates with them, and this
has resonated with me," Allen told the Times. "We're up against an extremely tough opponent here.
The exponential nature of the growth of this disease is really a challenge -- we've already seen in the
U.S. where one case quickly became two."
The gift makes him one of the largest individual donors to contribute to the cause. He had previously
pledged $26 million to nonprofits and government agencies fighting the disease, including the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The $100-million pledge also doubles his Microsoft cofounder's gift -- the Bill & Melinda Gates
Foundation announced in September that it would donate $50 million toward fighting the Ebola
outbreak.
Allen's donation will go to several different organizations, including the World Health Organization,
the United States State Department, and the University of Massachusetts Medical School, which
funds lab equipment in Liberia. Allen has also created a website, www.TackleEbola.com, to direct
smaller donors towards projects they can help fund.
"I got a taste when I was in Kenya a while ago of what medical care was in rural Africa," Allen said.
"I was in a town of about 10,000 people, and a shipping container with a rusty microscope was their
medical clinic."
Allen confirmed the news of his donation via Twitter.
I'm committing at least $100M to #TackleEbola. Join me in helping those responding to this
outbreak at http://t.co/6Nd1JWfPEF
