SKALD: Against the Black Priory is a premium strategy game from developer High North Studios AS. It's a team-based RPG adventure featuring retro pixel graphics and dark fantasy themes. In it, players will lead a band of broken heroes as they face the darkness and fight to redeem their honor.
Similar to Songs of Silence and Wartales, SKALD: Against the Black Priory boasts tactical turn-based combat that lets players strategize and plan their moves. It offers a diverse roster of heroes with unique individual skills and abilities and allows for all kinds of different synergies and combinations.
Broken heroes
In SKALD: Against the Black Priory, you play as a mercenary and will form a party composed of broken heroes who've lost their will and honor. Explore a vast wasteland filled with Lovecraftian horrors and meet all kinds of shady individuals as you uncover secrets and behind-closed-curtain schemes of the Gallian Empire, all while trying to carve out a path to survive your mere existence.
There are over a dozen classes to choose from depending on your preferred play style. You can level up to 20, allowing you to unlock and combine all kinds of skills and abilities, as well as various gear to equip. This strategy RPG has a dice mechanic in its gameplay that puts your fate to the luck of the roll.
Take on various quests with specific objectives to accomplish, while reading journals that describe the location of hidden secrets throughout the map. Now, while the game's 8-bit pixel art is quite charming and gives it a unique presentation, it unfortunately works against it as it sacrifices text legibility. The use of bright sprites and vibrant colors will be quite overwhelming for some, nauseating even.
A dark and unique adventure
All in all, if you like dark fantasy adventure games, SKALD: Against the Black Priory offers a compelling experience with its tactical combat, curious story, and unpredictable nature.
