Community-driven free DOOM release

FreeDOOM is a free-to-use game utility that serves two purposes. For those who are after nostalgia, this allows you to play a faithful remake of the 1993 first-person shooting  pioneer. However, this also doubles as a community project that aims to consolidate the raw data of the game and make modding and accessing them easier.

While there are countless remakes of the original DOOM, FreeDOOM aims for a larger, more profound impact on the community. Playing it is easy, although it requires a third-party, open-source port like prBoom to run. Its modern sequels include the 2016 Doom and Doom Eternal.

Play DOOM, or help build it

FreeDOOM is one of the many community-driven projects aimed at preserving the classic id Software title. However, what sets this apart is that it aims to fully rebuild the game, and allow centralized access to a wider range of user-generated content. While id Software has released the Doom source code, the original data saved in an IWAD package wasn’t included. This project aims to create a full IWAD file.

Aside from this, this utility also comes with its remake of the classic FPS. It is a complete game, containing all the levels, enemies, and even the secrets of the original. Beyond that, the files are regularly updated for fixes and the package has an ever-changing library of additional content. You can access custom levels, use a different player portrait, or try out new weapons.

Unfortunately, the versatility it offers comes with challenges. For example, as mentioned, it needs a limit-removing source port. It has a list of supported source ports, such as prBoom or The Eternity Engine. To access its other capabilities, users also need to follow a set of specific instructions or risk failing or corrupting their run. Also, some of the extra materials have bugs in them, making troubleshooting an added problem.
