At our May 29 public program, Mike Keane, co-owner of O’Hara’s Restaurant and Pub; Tim Brown, retired firefighter and 9/11 survivor; and Dr. David Abramson, Director of the Center for Public Health Disaster Science at NYU’s School of Global Public Health, discussed the ways individuals came together in public spaces after the attacks to grieve, find solace, and memorialize. When recounting how O’Hara’s became a space like that, Brown stated, “The folks come up from Washington and I introduce them to the families and — firefighters, families, police officers. And — again, we — come here, we pay our respects, we gather as a community. We interact, we get to know new people, but then we go home. And home is O’Hara’s. And, and there we can eat, we can drink, we can talk, laugh — right? That’s what we do. Here we don’t laugh. But when we go to O’Hara’s, it’s okay to laugh. And-- that brings us together.” To learn more about what our experts had to say, stay tuned for more clips or watch other programs on our YouTube channel: https://ow.ly/nAms50SfnSH

On Thursday, we hosted the commemoration of the 22nd anniversary of the formal end to the rescue and recovery operations at Ground Zero. Led by the ceremonial units from the FDNY, NYPD, New York City Department of Sanitation, New York City Department of Correction, and The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, members of the community gathered to recognize the thousands who worked tirelessly at the World Trade Center site in the days and weeks that followed the attacks and to honor the thousands of individuals who are suffering or have died from illness or injury as a result. During the ceremony, guests heard the unique perspectives of Phil Alvarez, 9/11 advocate, and Catherine McVay Hughes, former Chair of Manhattan Community Board 1. Beth Hillman, #911Museum President and CEO acknowledged the tremendous 9-month effort that involved thousands of individuals, including those from the New York City departments of Design & Construction, Sanitation, Correction, Buildings, and Parks, the Office of Chief Medical Examiner, and the Transit Workers Union; the Red Cross and the Salvation Army; and hundreds of buildings and trades—ironworkers, boilermakers, electricians, teamsters, operating and structural engineers, sheet metal workers, carpenters, laborers; the U.S. National Guard, military personnel, and so many more.

On Monday night, in partnership with OCA-NY, the #911Memorial & Museum welcomed community members for a special community evening in recognition of AANHPI Heritage Month. Attendees had the opportunity to explore the Museum, speak with representatives from the World Trade Center Health Program and 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund, and hear from retired Port Authority Police Department Lieutenant David Lim and lower Manhattan artist Naoto Nakagawa. Lim and Nakagawa spoke about their deep connection to the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, the power of storytelling, and the importance of ensuring their stories are told to future generations. On 9/11, Lim was assigned to the World Trade Center with his K-9, Sirius. When the first plane struck the North Tower, Lim responded immediately. He believed leaving Sirius in the South Tower, which had not yet been attacked, was the safest option. As Lim assisted with the evacuation of the North Tower, the South Tower was struck and fell. Sirius was killed in the collapse. When Sirius was recovered in the winter of 2002, he was ceremoniously removed from the site, befitting a fallen member of the PAPD. Nakagawa's studio was, and continues to be, in lower Manhattan. When Nakagawa first arrived in New York, he was in awe of the Twin Towers' construction. Months before 9/11, Nakagawa was working on a piece inspired by moss in the Hudson River. After witnessing the attacks, he felt compelled to change the piece to honor the victims. They are represented in the piece, "Stars of the Forest: Elegy for 9/11," as shining stars.
