Best pastel suits for candy-coloured vibes

There was a moment during Haider Ackermann’s second collection for Berluti that the pastel suit officially became a thing. It was when model Willow Barrett slinked across the cobbled stone courtyard of the 16th-century building wearing a double-breasted yellow silk suit that looked like the love child of sunshine and syrup. Countless other brands followed, erm, suit, from Ermenegildo Zegna – where the suits were terracotta – to Richard James, where pastel silks were flavour of the moment. The trend was affirmed when John Galliano sent out an extraordinary bias-cut blue silk suit as part of his AW18 collection.

In fact, the pastel suit has left its mark all-throughout the last two decades. Exhibit A, David Bowie was a fan of a light summer suit, he wore one in royal blue to perform at the Hammersmith Apollo in 2002 (he also wore a floral silk jumpsuit in the early Seventies, but that’s another story). Bryan Ferry performed in a silk Louis Vuitton tuxedo at Coachella in 2014. Harry Styles wore a bespoke Alexander McQueen pastel suit in lilac paisley to the 2017 Aria Awards (he’s been wearing pastel hues from Gucci ever since) and, if we’d had our way, Prince Harry would have worn a pastel suit to get married in.

Looking to more recent runways, the admiration of pastel tailoring doesn't seem to be going anywhere. Paul Smith sent sky-blue suits down the catwalk, while at Louis Vuitton Virgil Abloh did the same. At Lanvin we saw pastel-hued jackets and at Craig Green there were powder-blue suits.

Having carefully compiled a list of the finest pastel suits on the market right now, it has come to our attention that a good pastel suit is a real diamond at the bottom of a deep, dark ocean. But when it does work, it might just be the coolest suit in your closet.
